So I can't help myself, my tank is still a couple months away but I have purchased another major component - the Wave Makers.
I was lucky enough to meet Axel Tunze at Underwater Pet Expo (even have dinner and a couple of beers to celebrate the weekend) and naturally you get talking about wave makers (right?). The technology packed into this Stream 3 pump from Tunze just blew my mind, I had to have them!
So as soon as I heard there was stock in Australia, I got my hands on a pair to go into the new tank.
Maglev technology, special hertz that won't harm fish, epic power and near silent operation were amongst the positive factors, size was the only negative factor I had to consider when purchasing.
So now that they are here, which of hype (good or bad) was true?

On a bit tank like that, I honestly don't think I could recommend anything remotely close to the stream 3. I would go a couple, more if you can afford it and have them on a lower percentage flow just so you don't have to blow sand around the tank (unless you are going bare bottom, then wind them right up!)

@@ParkersReef I've gone for a sand bottom so I hope the controllability of the pumps will help tune the flow , ive got 650mm of water depth so expecting a couple of well placed pumps will keep the sand where I intended it to be !

Wow! Great pump - reckon they will be easy to hide in the back - that's what you want... I used to want gyres (and I have a big one) but now I have it vertically in the corner ofh the overflow. As these go sideways I would later on get gyres and have them on the back pushing forward. I'd get these in a bigger tank but I'm right for now - down the track I think I will get the Tunze Wavebox as I want the corals swaying 🙌🤤🥊

Depends on the tank. This moves bulk water, but is also a bit larger than the 6155/6255 style of pump. So it really depends on your tank and scape :) For me - the stream 3 though!

I have the new aqua one reefsys 315, the tank is 4 ft long and I’m looking at doing a predominant lps and softie with maybe a couple sps. Was just wondering on a few pump choices and wheather I’d need 1 or two just to start off with. Thanks

@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jesse, congrats on the new tank! How exciting :) Ok that is a nice sized tank, I think you could go one medium sized pump or two smaller pumps to get the results you are looking for. Multiple pumps pushing less water each is always more flexible, but obviously costs more. If I were you, I’d look at a tunze 6040, an AI Nero 5 or a vortech mp40qd. I run a 6040 on my Red Sea 130 and it is an absolute ripper

Not a huge fan (well any fan) of the way that pump mounts to the tank. Seems like if you imagine the "cone of flow" that comes from it, a good portion of it hits the glass immediately, unless you use that flow diverter and mount it vertically (then hope to high heaven that diverter never pops off, otherwise you're probably ruining your lights). The other aspect I don't like is the anti-Vortech argument, and that you can aim your flow more than just perpendicular to a glass face. While there may be new technology here, I really feel like this Tunze pump is a step in the wrong direction and no way I have any desire to get one to replace anything on my tank. Maybe if I ran a complete bare bottom and I mounted this to the bottom pane of glass it'll be useful to kick stuff up.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
Hey that’s fair enough! Certainly not suited to all tanks, not even a majority :)
@Moonfruit777
@Moonfruit777 4 жыл бұрын
The large size is indeed a problem. I have a ~4x2x2 peninsular and was thinking of getting two of them. To "hide" them I'd mount them vertically next to/on to the overflow. The amount of water still shooting upwards despite the attachment is concerning me a lot tbh! Maybe you can show or tell what the minimum depth is you have to position the pump so it does not spill water out of the tank, when placed in a vertical position? Also interesting to know would be the minimum depth when mounting it horizontally, with the normal attachment, to see how high you can mount it before it sucks air into the water! (obviously, in both scenarios, you'd want it as high as possible to have as little of the cord in the tank. That would be awesome! :)
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
I’ll see what I can do. 2 of these in a 4x2x2 would be way too much in my opinion. I have just one of these running in my 6x2.5x2 now (although it’s basically empty) and it is turned right down

@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
I can say for certain that the MP40 is the loudest, especially once over 40% power. But it is old, not the new "QD" model. The design of those pumps will always have some noise though. The gyres are fairly loud too, they are very quiet once clean, but it only takes a week or two before they make an audible noise again. The original 7 year old Tunzes are the next loudest and they really only emit a small hum when on the higher percentages of flow. Last is the stream 3 (which I know is brand new...) and it insane levels of flow, you still could not hear it until you put you ear right next to it. I am honestly shocked by the performance to sound level

Hey Mate, nice video. Very informative... One question - How wide is the cone of flow generated? Looks powerful but is it wide? 🤔
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
yeah that is a totally fair question. The flow pattern did seem to be relatively narrow, but it could well have been much wider - just concentrated in the centre. When you see water blowing over the bracing at the far end of the tank, it's hard to focus anywhere else! EDIT - I've gone back for a closer look. The stream is relatively narrow, but has almost wave box like qualities. If you go for the wave function, the entire body of water is rocking back and forth. Almost hypnotic

So although a fair review, it seems there is some disadvantages in the way the pump was tested and reviewed. In all fairness, a used pump cant compare to a new one, that's first. Secondly mp40 shouldn't be making any noise, mine is silent as anything can be. Thirdly your mp40 is position in the center wall where your tunze is on the side wall. I would have positioned the tunze in a manner comparable to the mp40 to truly see flow accuracy and power. Any pump next to a wall will have concentrate immense power because there is no spread or extension of water. Just compare the spread of light from a flashlight and its outward extension for an idea of water movement spread.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely valid points, except for the silent mp40 comment. Haven’t come across a silent one yet 😅 In fairness though, it would be near impossible to make them silent - the whole magnet coupling mechanism through the glass is technologically amazing, but has plenty of draw backs. This wasn’t really meant to be a comparison video, more so a showcase of the stream 3 :)
@michaelisakov1108
@michaelisakov1108 4 жыл бұрын
@@ParkersReef my mp 40 is silent as heck. Maybe you need an MP60. It could be your glass is too thick causing a bad connection, which is known to cause a rumbling noise. Normally I've heard of this when they are misaligned, so I would check that too as glass and water have a bad habit of changing perspective by bending light. You may think its aligned but in actuality it could be slightly off center.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaelisakov1108 Yeah, the only way any MP40 I've observed (on my tanks and others) have been silent is if A) they're run at an extremely low speed, and definitely not any pulsing, or B) there's so much noise from all the other equipment you don't hear the motor ramping up and ramping down. And this almost always is going to be an issue with the external motor, and not an alignment issue, sure an alignment issue will cause noise too, but the external motor is just... well external, so not muffled. Unless you are the one person in all of reefkeeping that got completely silent bearings on your pump
