I own my R50 for almost 20 years now. Understanding the mechanism is very important while driving. Now I clearly understand why my reverse gear stuck sometimes. Thank you sir!

thank you for the comment. That's why I opened it to see what was in this 'magic' box most of us never see inside of. I was surprised how small the gears are.

Hi Mark I have bought an R50 with no compression in one cylinder as a project to try and resurrect. I came across your videos while doing a bit of research and have now watched the whole series. Thanks for taking the time to make these they are very detailed and clear and have been of great help in understanding how this car is put together (or rather taken apart) 👍.

Good luck Ryan, might be a valve not seating correctly or something simple. The R50 is lovely to work on. I'm far fonder of the Gen 1 than the later models. Thank you for watching them and hope they help.

Thanks for that excellent strip down. I have a suspect R65 box languishing in my garage which I've planned to strip down to practice on! As I'm now 78yrs it's always something I put off doing but you may just have stirred me enough! It's off a Rover 216 so may be slightly different.

I'll be rebuilding one of those gearboxes for real very soon I'm a professional HGV mechanic but as I say I enjoyed the video very much in fact ill going watch it again

Very well demonstrated strip down Mark. I too have never ventured too deep into gearboxes as I’ve always treated them as the work of the devil. Different subject~ I had the disintegration of the diode on mine last week. Brake lights remain on....

Thank you Patrick, hopefully it gives some idea of what's in the magic box lol and why they can fail. I now know about a diode and the rear brake lights lol, just had to search it to understand what you meant. On the right in the drivers footwell I see. I'd have never known about that. Looks just like a connector.

@@CoatsandGaiters Yes, i do now, but when I had just fitted my £8 reversing sensors and spliced into the reversing-light, i noticed my brakelights were on when I came to test my latest must-have. So, 2 weeks later, thinking new BCM (as ive locked the cambus or blown an onto isolator...Im a wiser man. I just soldered a 1N4008 diode onto the old leads and cliped it all back together.the gretest problem Ive encountered is lack of wiring diagrams , except the Haynes one. Quite why BMW did it that way, and used a hall-switch is beyond me...

Thanks a lot for the video. It's the only one showing a r50 Midlands teardown I could find. After trying to get to the bottom of a bearing noise coming from the clutch or transmission of mine, I'm considering a rebuild of the transmission to replace the bearings that most commonly cause issues. They seem to be the 2 just below the 5th gear clip (though in fact it might be the clip themselves) and the bearining just behind the clutch release bearing. Do you know how hard/risky it is to replace those bearings? Especially can you replace them without special equipment? (especially without a hydraulic press). Thanks!

I'd love to find a video on how you replace those bearings that explains how you do it / pitfalls. Understandably, the overhaul manual assume you have that knowledge, which I don't. I believe it is as a lot of people do a conversion to the Getrag, I think you have to change other items though as well. It's not quite as simple as just changing the gearbox itself.

I'm glad I managed to find a video that can get me started. Mine makes bad bearing-like noises when the transmission is under load (giving it gas in 1,2, or 3 will cause this) and I'm thinking it's the input shaft bearing. 1-2 synchro also seems like it's worn out as well, and reverse makes a clanking racket. I'm in the US and I've found no one so far that actually rebuilds transmissions unless it's an "American" car. Even the MINI dealerships just tell me they would replace it with a new one, which amounts to $5200 out the door. It's pretty disappointing really. Do you know if the Getrag 5 speed from the post-2004 is a direct fit? Perhaps I can source one of those in good shape.

Thank you for your comment. My black mini on my channel had the Getrag and I removed that to do a clutch rattle. They are a direct fit and a much better gearbox as the first one or Midlands Gearbox was weak and did explode when pushed hard. I think gear linkages etc might be different. In the UK most enthusiasts change the gearboxes to the Getrag so it can be done fairly easily I believe. Here is Part 4: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qa-ImrN1rNXYk4U.html&feature=shares

@@CoatsandGaiters Thanks! I’ll definitely do some more research. I know the shift linkages/cables were changes to have metal ends instead of the plastic ones like mine do. I know a lot of enthusiasts changed them to metal as most broke if shifted too hard. Idk if mine were changed or not. If the Getrag 5 speed winds up being a drop in then I may go that route for the better reliability.

Totally agree!!! It’s definitely a specialist area. A friend of mine repairs automatic gearboxes and boy do I respect the ability he must have. Just hope it still works when I put it back into the car or I might just do a complete take it apart video next with nothing to loose.
