This is the perfect end to an excellent series with spot-on analysis, especially emphasizing the conservative mindset. One can only hope that the likes of Shaw, Samson and SKY don’t ‘evolve’ into anchors, like what happened with Rohit, Rahul, Virat, and now Pant and Hardik. (Perhaps, IPL captaincy has something to do with it?). Due to their recent performances in World Cups, not many would remember that Rohit holds the record for the fastest T20I hundred (35 balls), Rahul holds the record for the fastest 50 in the IPL (14 balls), and Virat holds the record for the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian (52 balls). Indian cricket has a unique way of turning aggressive players into accumulators. Jarrod hit the nail on the head when he said that the fear of failure is the primary cause of India’s failure.

Virat and Rohit were always (aggressive) anchors. They definitely have scored the fastest hundreds but they used to be called anchors back then too. It was just that they were so skillful that they can play those double paced innings at will. KLR became an anchor after a couple of explosive seasons (which were actually out of character for him). Shaw can not play as an anchor. Samson definitely has anchor potential so interested and a little apprehensive to see his progression. SKY has reaped blissful gains as an aggressor on the international stage already. He isn't changing his approach.

Finally someone said it....Indian media is busy blaming and money-shaming players picked on IPL form, when most players are still picked based on reputation and not form.....Social media is still blaming Varun Chakravarthy for 2021 WC when he really bowled just one bad over (that too in heavy dew and match practically over by then) and India actually got knocked out because of ridiculously poor batting by superstars (who were not "IPL picks" in partuclar).......People still blame DK's selection for WC 2022 selection when he did not even play the knockout match........When you still pick players like Rahul, Jadeja, Ashwin, Pant who do not fit the format or havent necessarily done great things, you are bound to have troubles........When wc teams are loaded with MI players, you know players are not picked on form but reputation.....

So many questions about Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian batting for that game against England. I'll try and simplify the entire 11's performance from a fan's perspective. Kl Rahul- Out of form. We assume his wicket will fall during the powerplay and hence, we don't worry too much if he gets out. Anything he scores is bonus runs. Rohit Sharma- Out of form. Same as KL, although with a hope that he might come back into his own and start scoring fast runs again. But again, at the start of every innings, we already assume his wicket will fall. Virat Kohli - We hit panic mode when his wicket falls. We expect him to take the innings through and be our insurance against yet another batting collapse. The only problem with him was the failure to accelerate at the end against England. If he had batted along with Hardik till the end, India would have got 190. But then again, even that wouldn't have been enough. Suryakumar Yadav - We expect a lot of fireworks. But we also know he might fall at any time. He is exactly how we feel about Rishab Pant in tests. Again, we know he will fall to a good ball but we don't really mind that because his job is to come and score at 170+. Hardik Pandya - Probably the most of our hopes lie on him. When the middle order collapses, we expect him to anchor. When the middle order does it's job, we expect him to provide fireworks. His wicket hurts us the most, even more than Kohli or SKY. Rishab Pant - Again, if he scores, well and good. If he doesn't, we don't mind it a lot because again, we don't think of him to be a dependable strokemaker. R Ashwin - two sixes or three fours. That's it. With the ball, all we want is for him to give less than 28 runs. That's it. R Ashwin is more valuable for us in tests. Axar Patel - Same as Ashwin. We also expect 1-2 wickets. We get to know when he will take wickets and when he will not. He will get wickets either by getting the batsmen to cut from the stumps or getting them to drive in the v when he's turning the ball. B Kumar- Max 6 rpo. Few wickets at the top. Ideally we would like to see him bowl out within 14 overs. He has lost his midas touch at the death and it doesn't look like coming back anytime soon. Mohammad Shami - He will leak some runs but will also get us wickets. That's what we expect of him. Most of his runs are going to be flicks off the legs. Arshdeep Singh - Wickets, dot balls and good yorkers at the end. But to be really, really honest. We knew from the start of the tournament that this bowling attack was really weak. I don't know what clicked for them but something did. We expected every team to bat the way England batted. It's just that during the league phase, something clicked for the bowlers that didn't let the batsmen score freely.
@RR_theproahole
@RR_theproahole Жыл бұрын
I know what clicked- India played against Netherlands and Pakistan at MCG, they played Zimbabwe at SCG and SA at Perth, in all those games, new ball was swinging yards and Indian seamers got wickets upfront, but there was another match, it was India vs Bangladesh and it was at Adelaide, that was where our new ball bowlers failed, that was a wake up call but we kept sleeping and guess what we played England at the same venue and thier batters hammered the shit out of our bowlers and that's because they were bowling the same good length deliveries which worked on other grounds but failed to work at Adelaide because of dry wicket and short boundaries, we needed bowlers who could bowl fast and bowl agressive line length like Yorkers and bouncers but we didn't have that kind of bowling lineup.

Something about the conservative mindset and not building a system to allow your player go out is because its Indian culture. We Indian with highest percentage of young people are run by older people. You can see it in Indian family. If we will not try new things how we will grow. If we fail we will learn. Rigidity in any case is harmful. 2nd point the star things. It's present in all over India, we are obsessed with hero. You can see it in Indian film industry. BCCI approach is also the same. They don't look to build a team but a individual who can serve as a captain of all formats. And hence we can see that they give chances to one particular individual more than other because they see this individual as the torch bearer/star/hero of Indian cricket in coming future. So much marketing around Kohli, so much chances to Rohit and Rahul that we almost forgot the key players who also contributed. Concentration of power or money or fame at one place is harmful.

I thought similar xi’s would have worked when kohli was going through that phase but the reality is every team needs one anchor/ crunch situation player and that’s who kohli is. It’s what stokes was in the final. Also I personally think sky should open - give your best batsman the most amount of balls, rather than hoping he can save you in the middle overs. Honestly a sky kohli partnership opening might just be what the doctor ordered.
@jal.ajeera
@jal.ajeera Жыл бұрын
Stop shepherding your arguments around Kohli all the time! Enough! Anchor mentality in a team sport breeds a negative accumulator culture. What if SKY starts thinking why don't I be the anchor and accumulate runs instead of going gung ho from ball 1. That'll ensure him to have an even better average, much more records under his belt and only a slight strike rate downgrade. Same with Shaw or Rahul Tripathi. Anchor works if you are 24-4 after 4 or some crisis situation. But if one of your top 3 is consuming balls upfront, that builds an insane amount of pressure on the opposite end. He may catch up eventually, but it's too late till that time and other batsmen perish trying to up the ante. The reason Kishan was booted from Indian T20 was due to the same reason. Anchors are the worst breed of players in a T20 setup. Accommodating this mentality has been the reason for India's no show at WCs.
@manojsundar5719

That anchor role is what Rahul should do. He does it for LSG.Rahul/rohit/Kohli. It's the same in t 20. Rahul can keep wickets( 2nd keeper). Kohli and rohit won't bowl, won't keep.
@saaranganarvind1003
@saaranganarvind1003 Жыл бұрын
@@jal.ajeera this argument is made as if kohli was the reason we failed. Consider what happens when you leave out his experience vs Pakistan. I agree that 3 anchors is excessive and detrimental to a campaign but you don’t take out your best performing player from this and the 2016 wc due to the failure of your openers. Kohli flourishes with quick runs scored at the other end which is why playing him around Shaw and sky, etc will get the best out of him.

I love your reformative idea of Indian players being allowed to play other leagues even under whatever stipulations the BCCI need. But even something as small as having a “traveling IPL” could theoretically work. We know the IPL was a huge success playing in Dubai. So why not Australian? England? WI and US to prepare for the World Cup? Also loved the ending, wish I could show this to every Indian team fan about failure. Good job!
@krishnanandpremanand3581

Playing in Dubai is just a half an hour timing difference whereas playing in Australia or England would require IPL to either be telecast during the day which may cause lower viewership on TV or would be live during the day which might reduce the ticket sales of IPL and BCCI is aiming to get as much money as possible from the IPL
@RR_theproahole
@RR_theproahole Жыл бұрын
No it's not a good idea. Organizing IPL is a big thing and big players are involved in it and you need a window for it, it's even bigger than any world cup or champions trophy. ICC stops most of the international matches for it and it requires a big amount of viewership, big money is involved, every big business owner want to be a part of it and you just can't take any risk there, it must be perfect which is only possible when it's in India. It's lot easier to just send your uncapped and young players to different leagues so that they can gain foreign experience without any schedule change in international cricket.

I would love to hear you discuss these ideas with Harsha. Issues highlighted by you are quite obvious but the problem is not identification but what is stopping Indian cricket board to implement these ideas. One problem you haven't highlighted here is the interference by broadcasters in Indian team selection and match scheduling. When a broadcaster pays top dollar for the telecast rights which is a very aggressive pricing to recover, they force BCCI to select top stars who draw viewership. It doesn't matter if team is unit or not, it must have big names so their fans tune in when they play. That's why big decisions like dropping Rohit and Kohli from T20 setup is next to impossible. Also the dark truth of scheduling. India when plays abroad is forced to have an schedule which is television viewership friendly. Means having the match timings which go into night and during weekends. Playing top teams early so early TRP's can be generated. These are dark secrets of Indian cricket which no one talks about. 🤔

As an outside perspective, the hard ban on Indian players, and particularly those not on central contracts, from participating in T20 leagues around the world, is just puzzling. Indian talent is just going to get stagnant without exposure to other conditions around the world. Let's take Sanju Samson as an example. He's a fringe player who barely plays international cricket anymore (due to whatever reasons, not important in this discussion), and is such a waste just rotting away in the Indian domestic circuit. If he's next to no chance to play, why isn't he playing in the English Vitality Blast? Or the Big Bash? Or the Carribean Premier League? We've seen such rich dividends from the Indian women from playing particularly in Australia. Mandhana, Kaur, Deepti just to name a few, all gained vital experience prior to the world cup a couple years ago in Australia, which led directly to them beating Australia in that opening game there.

It's not the South Africa zone mate, it's the BlackCaps zone. Even when they play out of their skins and get to the final of a tournament, it's usually a one off or they choke at the last. Consistently 5th best ranked team in the world, except when weird formats or bookings go their way. You just wouldn't count on them to beat anyone consistently everywhere. Lots of home field advantage, but go to India, England or especially Australia and they suddenly forget how to play and turn into a whipping boy. There are constant calls for leadership heads to roll after a tour failure, and when things are going well, it's usually by the skin of the teeth rather than an allround dominant team performance. Some world class players on their day, but not enough, often enough to develop a top of the top tier team.

India's best 11 includes Kohli Disappointed that you dropped Kohli from your suggested 11. Surely, India has too many anchors at the top and that needs to change. But, if we're going to have one such batsman, it should be Kohli, who has excelled in that role (and not Rahul). Let's also not forget that he has performed under pressure even against top-quality sides (Pakistan at MCG most recently). Without his bail-out acts, India probably wouldn't even have made it to the semi-finals. He would be like Stokes in the current England team - the banker for crunch situations. He may bat slowly compared to others, but takes them home when it matters (and when others fail). Also, players like Rahul Tripathi have done reasonably well in IPL but they have hardly played any cricket outside India (or Asia) and are yet to be tested against top international teams in challenging conditions. To replace Kohli, a proven performer, with untested players wouldn't be in India's interest (that too when he's back in form).

We ourselves want that perfection which gives a cultural rise to traditional anchors in the format where perfection is not a thing. My ideal XI rn would be - 1. R Gaikwad/KL Rahul/S Gill (Mandatory anchor) 2. R Tripathi/P Shaw (Aggressive opener) 3. S Samson (Pant needs to prove it in IPL and Kishan had a hot and cold season last year) 4. SKY 5. H Pandya 6. R Tewatia/D Hooda/W Sundar (Tewatia is the only 6 we have right now) 7. Jadeja (If not fit then Sundar should come in without questions) 8. D Chahar/H Patel (Wicket taking option with some batting) 9. Bumrah 10. Arshdeep/U Malik/A Khan (This has to be looked at and will depend on the combinations) 11. Somehow India team has lost confidence after Dhoni's exit. They did not find a unit who will be as dangerous as Australia was once. They did not find a captain with a good leadership skills. Either they are paralysed by their own analysis or by fear of losing but they are trusting their new latents and thus had to rely on older ones.

India won their last major cup in 2013. After that 2014 T20 WC- Dhoni 2015 ODI WC- Dhoni 2016 T20 WC- Dhoni 2017 CT - Kohli 2019 ODI WC- Kohli 2021 T20 WC- Kohli 2022 T20 WC-Rohit So after the last major trophy India won; Dhoni led India to the same number of losses as Kohli did in his entire career. So what is your point by saying India lost confidence after Dhoni?

Replace Rahul with Kohli, Kohli has been the sole performer in all icc tournaments. It's not wise to displace him for tripathi. What do you want from Kohli after playing the best game ever in Melbourne. 🤦. He is the only Indian batsman who can handle quality bowling attack. This sounds like a conspiracy from Jarrod. I'm not even a Kohli fan, but lost respect on Jarrod's analysis. Thought you are one of the best cricket analysts.

India can produce their batting line-up stacked with batsmen with 145+ SR that's what is the future....but guys like you are stuck in past....and the greatness of the player you are fond of...just it's so sad you just see an individual player in that whole video not the other good and important stuff he said....about pressure from fan/ winning all game mandatory/ fear of failure....

Well I agree Kohli will be considered the best anchor if anchor needed which of course one is needed but it's time to groom shubman..etc as an anchor...it's better for Kohli's longevity in cricket...so that somehow he can get to 100 century (that's very important for blind fans like you😂)

India don't fail as often as other teams, at least in bilaterals. And when they DO fail, they don't try to learn from it, believing that tried and tested methods will produce results eventually. Ironically, the people that taught them this mindset have moved on to a far more aggressive strategy and are now the undisputed white ball World Champions.

The problem is India only drops players permanently, there is no tactical team changes, there's just give a player chances till he fails a lot and then replace them with someone else

@@arjitmishra100 When Kohli was the same age as of Shah, Kohli was already No.2 ranked ODI batsmen with 50+ average in ODIs with legendary inningses of 133* in Hobart and 183 vs Pakistan. Kohli was in turn the highest run scorer for India in both ODIs and T20is and also in T20 WC in 2012.So no comparison to any youngsters with Kohli at 23. Cant say the same about Rohit though. @@arjitmishra100 1- Shaw is 23, not 21. 2- At 23, Kohli was already winning matches for India, famously hitting that knock against SL in Hobart and single handedly started the downslide of Lasith Malinga as a bowler. Then he took on Pakistan in the asia cup, smashed 183 and started the downfall of Saeed Ajmal (who was dominating spin) and ensured Aizaz Cheema never played for Pakistan again. He also had numerous centuries, including one test century against Australia when the entire team had failed, and numerous chasing hundreds, often batting with the tail and still getting the job done. He was also topping the rankings table and won his first ODI player of the year at 23 years of age. Also, Kohli never played with a six lane highway gap between bat and pad, resulting in him getting bowled in even slightly pacy conditions, leaving him to be able to smash only ranji trophy bowlers in the hot and dusty pitches of the Indian subcontinent. Next time, do some research before trying to look smart on the Internet. RIP for now

Why can't India send 2 teams to the World Cup ? New Zealand with a population of 5 million gets to have a representation of 11 players and INDIA with 1.4 billion people also gets the same representation. 🤔 I mean how is this fair ?🙄 And where is this rule written that one nation can have only one team ? Going by this dumb logic had the partition of 1947 not happened, there would be 2 less teams in international cricket today. 😅 Just imagine if European Union 🇪🇺 was one country then the entire Europe would have only 1 team playing in the FIFA World Cup. 🙄 You can't compare INDIA to other small countries. INDIA is 1/6th of humanity. INDIA is a continent in itself. (Same goes for China) Indian players have to play under a lot of pressure. Firstly the pressure of expectations of the fans of this cricket mad nation and secondly the pressure of being in the team when there is an equally talented and deserving guy sitting out. No other country's players have to go through this kind of pressure. So the only way to reduce this pressure is by sending 2 🇮🇳 teams to the World Cup. Just imagine 2 Indian teams in two different groups of the World Cup with one sporting the dark blue jersey and the other wearing the light blue jersey. I don't think the ICC will have any objection either. India contributes to almost 80% of the revenue earned by the ICC and with 2 Indian teams the ICC can make more money out of it. So it's a win-win for everyone. 😅 This is the only solution. Food for thought 🤔 Hey Jarrod, I don't know whether you read the comments or not but if you do, would love to know your opinion. 🙏🏼
