Because it does deserve the focus, and let's not forget that's where the leadership resides as well, as both captain and vice captain are batsmen. Also, the difference in perfomance among bowlers doesn't seen to be lopsided which it seems it does with batting. How many matches have we seen especially recently where the top order eats balls and makes it seem the datting conditions are really difficult. But then lower order batsmen and opposition batsmen come along and it's like they're playing on a different pitch altogether!

3-4 years? I'd say 5 years minimum India is behind. And do you really think the rest of the world would be sitting idly and doing nothing? I wouldn't be surprised 5 years down the line England has hitters all the way up to 11 with even bowlers being able to strike like Jos Butler. By then England would be scoring at 10s even on rank tuners. Don't believe me? The English test team is prime example of that where they have frequently outscored India in ODIs and even T20s with their baz ball approach. They are testing in test cricket what is the base risk free rate that they can go with bazball and score big runs, and the answer already is around 5.5-6.5, In 5 years England could be scoring at 6-7 in test matches - which would push ODIs rates to 8-10.

I'd say they'll change this in 6 months time atleast in T20s. This approach is being criticised in and out. 2022 is the first year when our top anchors' spots are being questioned. The inclusion of Tripathi and Samson for the SL series suggest the same and one of them is destined to start for us. They definitely have included an anchor in Ruturaj but we'll always have atleast one of these anchors.

One of the reasons why India won WC 2011 is because of the way Dhoni used Yuvi perfectly to keep picking wickets in the middle overs (something which Yuvi himself said in a recent event). Now even England does the same with Rashid or Jordan. Where Eng beats others is because it has good bowlers who are more than capable batsmen. Even when they have injuries, they keep having bench strength of all arounders. This is why they are ready for all formats.

And also batsmen who can bat - Joe Root is doing that in PAK and has done that numerously in sub continent. 5 years down the line I wouldn't be surprised that England has a barrage of such cricketers who bowl as well as the main bowlers. Look at any game of India - they never have more than 5 options even though they have fewer batsmen than England, and England on the other hand always has infinite options to choose from.

At start of the tenure of the new management, I thought Dravid was going in for outbat approach but Asia Cup disaster was turning point according to me. I always thought similarly about this issue. I believe they take a "backgammon" approach but only half-heartedly: in backgammon as you all may know, you wanna focus on playing to the best of your ability, because even if sometimes you lose some matches, eventually better play equals more wins in the long run, and luck fizzles out as statistics make the better player prevail . But also, when you're losing by a lot, or when you're facing a must-win match (such as the indian knockout matches) the normal value of a win does not apply; even the most advanced computer will label riskier moves as "correct" play when a win or a loss means "something more" than just a single point.. You can't just say "meh, i'll take the loss, i'm better than the other guys anyway". You need to change your playing style. I think this video shows this perfectly. They need to go for riskier play, even if it means taking a few extra wickets when it's all-or-nothing. Great job as always JK, cheers from buenos aires

With this recent world cup, the answer to why they're losing is very complex, and you've done a brilliant job at going through them. But there needs to be a whole another video on this opening pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, who are being selected for the side on nothing but name brand and runs against weak opposition. I suppose Sharma is the captain, but there's literally no excuse for KL Rahul. The dude doesn't score when we need him to. He doesn't score fast even when he does score. He is so prone to getting out in the first over, that he's just stopped playing shots in that first over, only to get out a few overs later. He plays one incredible shot a game, has a very big name, has a stat sheet overflowing with empty runs in the IPL, and hence gets 'backed' forever. Frustrates the hell out of me.

I always get abused by my fellow Indian fans whenever I point out that India's bowling in knockout games is the reason we are losing more than batting. Rohit-Kohli fans think I am defending either of them. But whatever u do, its the bowling team that wins tournaments. Since 2003 WC final, 70-80% of the time Indian bowling has never supported the batting. But if u look at the teams that won, they do well in bowling. The Starcs, the Woakes, The Rashids, keep chipping at opposition. When was the last time Indian bowling had the opposition at 10-2 in a knockout game in PP?

The problem with India is similar to what it was with England in till the 2015 world cup. They are a good side, they have got world class players and a championship (IPL/COUNTY) that the world wants to participate in to improve their skills. But they are playing a brand of cricket that's obsolete. It is a band of cricket that wins them bilaterals, wins them series after series, makes them look good but is obsolete. Till 2015 Worldcup England were playing cricket of the 2007s or 2009-10s but the world had moved on. But they were winning bilateral ODIs and Test series one after the other. Same is with India, but while players of other were scoring 150+ and even 200 individually with a team score of 350+ English players were being applauded for their 110s and 120s with team score being 270-280. Same is with India, they are playing a brand of cricket that was acceptable till 2017-19. This bat strong-build partnership-Bowl in pairs is going to win them bilaterals wjere they can afford to lose one or two games. but that cushion does not coem with cut throat knockout battles. They just get blown away. And apparently they have still not learnt the lesson even 2 months after the completion of t20 Worldcup

With a population of 1.4 billion, cricket being by far the most popular sport for the country, they have no excuse. The mathma behind these facts say they should forever dominate. Look at Australia, 25 million and cricket isn't even the 2nd most popular sport and look what they do. Time has come for Indian cricket aka BCCI to stop giving seniors cricketers olive branches and fairytale endings. Any cricketer unless very young (absolute prodigy like Sachin) shouldn't be allowed to play more than 3 ODI world cups and 4 T20 world cups in my view. Look at Rohit Sharma he has played in 8 T20 World Cups (won 1 lost 7) and probably will try to sneak in for the next one too. Its just ridiculous! Its time to start dropping people from formats they dont belong to. Have horses for courses. Injury management has to improve. Lack of trophies will only gonna add pressure. Indian cricket will end up becoming a meme if the mindset with fairytale retirements and Godlike stature doesn't change :(

Hi Jarrod can you please highlight west indies's contribution to batsmen's test averages around the world. They seem to be a feeder nation providing 500-600 runs to every batsman with some easy hundreds to boot. If once could make a case for the North Eastern states in India to be relegated to the second rung of Indian domestic cricket, it is imperative we do it in the international arena for a few teams as quickly as possible (SL, WI..). The overall 'sanctity' of cricketing records is going busy. A hard fought career at 39.90 facing McGrath, Ambrose vs the current lot's 60-70 dining on the worst bowling available is taking the fun out of the game. 6 test playing nations are enough tbh.
@AmanKumar-de1kc
@AmanKumar-de1kc Жыл бұрын
Joe Root averages more against India than either SL or WI. Kohli averages lesser against WI than he does against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Williamson averages the same against Pakistan as he does against West Indies. Only Steve Smith is an outlier with an otherworldly 179. My guess is that it might help a few players but only by a few percentage points and as the big teams don't play either WI or SL for more than 2 matches every few years, the bump can't be too exaggerated. Pitches were much flatter and draws more common earlier in most places (at least during the latter part of 90s and the 2000s). You hardly see 600+ matches now (the current matches are the exception rather than the rule). Bowling's more accurate now than earlier and that is most evident by the lack of the number of balls you can square cut (short and wide). Batting against the top teams is objectively more difficult now so any bump you get against the lesser teams is balanced out by how much more difficult it is against SA, Australia, NZ, India and England than earlier.

@@AmanKumar-de1kc 100% agree... Test batting is the most difficult right now. Overall Team averages of matches played by some legendary players are shown below(Higher the average - easier the test batting era) Sachin - 36.43 Dravid - 36.15 Ponting -35.52 Smith -32.95 Babar - 31.63 Kohli - 31.12 Eg. There is a difference of 5 batting average/player in the matches Kohli and Sachin played.That means Kohli would have scored 5 RPI more if he played in 2000s in Test.That is a huge difference. (That translates to atleast 1000 runs and 5 centuries more for a player in current generation compared to someone who played in 2000s) Compensating the eras Test batting average of players look as follows(in bracket original average) Sachin 53(53) Dravid 52(52) Ponting 52(52) Smith 64(61) Babar 49(45) Kohli 54(49)

These stats Obv don't reveal the full picture as you very well know. It's interesting how people drag in the numbers to justify the nonsense pervading world test cricket. Zimbabwe, West Indies, SL have accelerated in their decline as is very clear to any cricketing bystander. Ensure only the top 5 plays. Just showcasing some lower avg of a player (when he clearly is part of a very average batting line-up pushing down the team avg+ the match avg) does not change the fact that 4 teams only have the resources to hold back a younger player from leaving T20. I'm ok with the bargain, let's just have a compact test scenario. Also in response to your stat, I'd love to know what the team average of india would be if Kohli was batting with Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Sachin...instead of the Rahanes who wouldn't be dropped even after 30 matches of low scores. Please use better stats.

You can analyze it as much as you want. No matter what team you pick if you score less than 6 runs an over almost in overs 5-10 when side boundaries are tiny you'll loose. No rocket science to it, kohli sharma let the game drift for too long.

Its practically impossible to give Prithvi Shaw or Rahul Tripathi a place in the top order, as Indian Cricket is not yet mature enough to move on from the key players, even though they have not been very consistent. Unlike England (where they moved on from Joe Root), Indian Cricket believes in giving a lot of chances to the experienced players. This in turn does not provide enough opportunities to the new and young players, so when most of the current experienced players will retire, India will have a team with the least experience (compared to the top 6 teams). With the rise of franchise cricket, the importance of bilateral (white-ball) series has declined. Now we rarely have any 5-match ODI/ T20I series. Considering this, BCCI should be more practical and allow players to play in foreign leagues.

Players contracted to BCCI can't play for foreign leagues and it hardly would make any difference TBH when we have our own marque league.

IPL does have a few limitations. Only 4 overseas' players per team. IPL being held in India (or UAE in exceptional cases), conditions are quite different from SENA nations. I am not saying that the players should stop playing in IPL but if BCCI allows players to play in foreign leagues it would be more beneficial. It would give them a chance to play around 10-12 matches in foreign conditions (which is more than they would get in a bilateral series), and also play against more foreign players.

The moment Rohit and Kohli retires from T20 cricket, then India will have chance to win the world cup. Sounds harsh but true These guys eat up all the deliveries at the beginning at a strike rate of 120-135 by catching up in the end and taking the score to 150-160. We need to start picking aggressive players in the top order and be persistent with them and shouldnt change the team suddenly in the world cup like they have been doing since 2019.

If Rohit & Kohli retire right now, India will lose every single game. Kohli is the backbone of this team. He is the only one who is able to score when everyone else around him is failing. We can drop Kohli when we have two more SuryaKumar Yadavs, but until then, we just cannot drop Kohli. If India had a deeper batting lineup, I wouldn't mind dropping Kohli & Rohit, but that doesn't seem like happening anytime soon.

He was scoring singles and once a while a boundary but now scoring rate has dropped down especially in his first 20 balls which adds pressure on other batsmen and Surya needs to save everytime to score quick runs. If he gets out, ppl blame him 🤦🏻‍♂️ Top 3 lost us the world Cup and we didn't pickup wicket takers in the world Cup. Need to stop changing mindset/tactic that we prepared for the world Cup. Ravi Shasthri was a far better coach than Rahul Dravid. But Shasthri was made fun of for the smallest of losses because he didn't have a stature like Dravid. And Indians are fools enough to believe that calmer people in grounds are better than aggressive ones.Rubbish Rahul-Rohit era lost an Asia cup, A WorldCup, A series against Bangladesh in span of 3 months. How ridiculous that is. Shasthri won 2 series in Australia and 1 in England. That how good a Test side was India under Kohli-Shasthri era. And India never lost a unimportant series like what happened last week under Dravid. Its time people come out of their bias and start criticising Dravid-Rohit era.
