DIY Garden Room - the garden room is 7.2x4.5m (externally), with a 2"x5" frame, 120mm PIR insulation, warm roof construction with Shou Sugi Ban larch cladding. We use it as a home office, gym and tv cinema room. Built 75% by Karen and 25% help from her husband.
This episode covers the electrics and installing the wall insulation - time consuming and not much fun! I had an electrician do the work, so it doesn't go into installation specifics, but the photos are quite self explanatory and show how he ran the circuits. The timber wall insulation took me about 3 weeks to do - it was long and laborious and I think any future project will involve something less time consuming!
BACKGROUND - During the first UK 2020 lockdown I decided to build my family a garden room. The teens had nowhere to hang out away from us parents and my husband was working from home indefinitely and needed office space. We have the space in the garden (even if it is sloped) - so why not build a multifunctional room! I had time on my hands (covid scuppered my business) and had talked about building one for years - now was my opportunity! I learnt tonnes along the way having only tackled fences, shed bases and wood stores before this. Subscribe to see the last in the series when I highlight all the key learning points and tips for building a garden room.

Just watched your project so far. Really impressed with everything you've done. I'm guessing your new job has occupied your time so much that you haven't had time to either finish the project or record yourself doing the final finishes. Real shame. Would be great to see it. All the best, David.

You are right! It has been the new job. I will finish the series as soon as I can. Though I have to admit, I was a bit DIY’d-out last year and still have a small section of cladding to finish off before I can say the project is finally finished. I need to do it before I move onto the pergola for this summer! 😂

Another great video did you insulate the entrance for the cable we wondered also is there an air gap over where cables run or did your electrician allow for the cable to run in insulation in his calculations? Cheers again j and g

Hi Garry, thanks for watching. Yes, the electrician used some of my rockwool to insulated the hole the cable entered. Re the cabling, he didn't want it going through the PIR, but he said some loose (ie not overpacked) rockwool at the back and in front of the cable run was fine. Particularly in the corners, the cable wasn't at 90 deg, but more curved, so you couldn't get any PIR in there and I just used the rockwool. He inspected it and was happy. Hope that helps. Karen

Formidable this Karen! Newbie question: i noticed you did not tape with foil on your wall around each of ur PIR edges. Any reason for that?

Hi, thanks for watching. Before plasterbiarding I put up a membrane around all 4 sides rather than taping everywhere. Though taping would do the same job. I really do need to get the next few videos out. I’m sorry about the long gap!
