Zwift user for 18 months now, great for bad weather or when times short. Tacx Neo is brilliant, I don't get the spinning/Peloton thing at all.

What don’t you get? It is great exercise on a stationary bike.

As a fan of the site, I am confident that your cost/benefit analysis of the Peloton is accurate and I initially chuckled at the folly of those who are willing to spend large sums on the dreams of beauty, and a glamorous life style that the product seems to offer. However, after a bit of introspection, I began to cringe thinking of the outcome if a similar study on my road cycling expenditures were conducted. Better than any spreadsheet, I can tell by the roll of my wife's eyes whether the purchase of a new bike, power meter, carbon bottle cages, etc. is truly economically justified. Probably like most Peloton devotees, in my heart I know that such purchased are not justifiable, but nevertheless I have difficulty in resisting the hopes and illusions they offer.

for the peloton bike and three years of subscription you can buy a good bike and a good trainer - and use it for the rest of your life! no sense at all...

I don't understand people who are motivated to go indoors to sweat on a bike that doesn't move. You learn no skills related to riding a bike like balance, negotiating traffic and pedestrians. Plus the views, nature, buildings, bridges, funny stuff people do. There is always something to look at, a route to plan, new areas to discover. It's like training soccer in a gym but all you do is kick the ball against a wall lightly. Rolling the ball. That is not soccer.

Before i buy a Peleton I have to clear some space in my attic next to my Norditrak, Ab Roller, and Zumba/ Tae Bo video collection. Wouldn't want to buy one without storage space... I'd look like such a fool!

I’m an amateur road racer. In the winter I go to a spin class at least once a week and enjoy it, it’s social and gets me out of staring at my tv screen on zwift. I get at least 65 TSS points out of a 45 min class, so I think it’s legit, but my gym membership is paid by my employer. I think Peloton is OK, but overpriced. Having said that, if it gets people active - go for it! maybe someday they’ll try getting out on the road.

All these negative comments spoken like non-peloton owners... I've never taken a spin class in my life and I am by no means rich, but I chose to invest in the bike. I could not be happier. I WANT to get on in every day and have to actively remind myself to allow rest days. The classes are FUN and push me and I can do it in my living room, no drive to a gym or excuse of inclement weather to stop me. I would 10,000% buy the bike again because the investment is in my health physically and mentally, and if we don't have that we have nothing. So many people would pay this much or more to upgrade their car every couple of years or buy some other type of nonessential upgrade or item to show off.... why not spend it on your health? Also, the bikes resell at almost the purchase price, so if you don't like it you can get almost all of your money back... 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yep - some people spend upwards of £40+/$40+ on a mobile phone. Also in a COVID world Peloton makes sense

Great summary of the true financial costs involved - like every gym Peloton depends on people subscribing and then not using their membership

People get suckered into spin bikes like the Peloton because marketing and they don't know any better. If Garmin, which now own Tacx, were to up their marketing it would influence sales negatively for Peloton. There has to be a reason Garmin bought Tacx and we have yet to see what that is. My guess is they are going to enter into the same model as Peloton.

Thanks for the info and calculator. Whilst I have no interest in the Peleton, it raises the question of what does it all cost? Probably should preface that with we probably don't want to know! Zwift has a subscription so say, 2 years of Zwift, plus a bike (& maintenance/parts) vs others like big ring, trainer road etc. - time for another calculator?

I cycle outdoors, weather and work permitting, but also use a spin bike with power-meter pedals as a training aid. I would rather have a smart turbo trainer but at the moment they are too loud and would annoy my neighbours. There are plenty of training videos on KZfaq, etc, for free; and so I do not know why anyone would need to go to the expense of buying a Peloton bike plus the monthly subscription.

Great breakdown, good job; However... I think you mistakenly attributed 'cost per class' as 'cost per month' @10mins... cost per class $5/£5 (*12 per week*4 weeks = about 50 classes per month) therefore cost per month = about $250/£250 @10.36... cost per class $3/£3 ................. = about $150/£150 I think..:)

@SpininStyle 5 жыл бұрын
You said a couple of times “$5 per month”. Don’t you mean per class? In your example of two years, there were 1000 classes, and $3000 total cost, which gives $3 per class, not $3 per month as you state in the video.

The peloton bike also costs something so that has to be calculated into the cost to find out profits per million users. Nevermind, didn't check video. So you have to buy it? I would never do that.

Peloton; Will become an expensive coat hanger for the newby who needs to be spoon fed and doesn't know the limitations of interval training. Cheers to Peloton for cashing in on a deceptively healthy scam. It works, like a new diet, first you see amazing results then you burn out and get fat again (after paying a lot of money for the protein shakes, I mean workouts).
