Day 12 of the Pennine Way was a rather boggy section from Alston to Greenhead. The sun was shining and it began with a stunning section of trail beside the river South Tyne. It then progressed to a boggy pathless slog but with light visible at the end of the tunnel... Hadrian's Wall was on the horizon.

I watch your trek every morning before I go off to work - it has helped me get through a couple of tough weeks. Mind is a charity close to my heart, thank you for choosing it!

Those bogs looked like hard work,as you said,best way is through them(not around them). So good that you had Lisa turning up now and again to boost your morale and having someone to accompany you on some of the days walking also good. By this stage of the walk you're really "on top of it" for sure.

Dean. "I have a cunning plan..." You could turn around at Kirk Yetholm and do the return leg... PW north to south. That way we wont have to go cold turkey after Saturday's episode of the 'Hobnob Bog Slog' Seriously, what are we to do without these to look forward to every morning!? I'm going to stock up on Hobnobs to help me through the withdrawal... :-)

Just bought the Cicerone book on Walking the Pennine Way and following the route you are taking, Dean, very interesting trying to pick up the various landmarks on the book's maps. Off to Tenerife in the morning so WiFi pending, will still be watching daily. Keep going.

What a great adventure! Really enjoying your truly inspiring videos each day and comparing the weather (and bog) conditions with when I did the same trek in 2017. Boggiest section yet to come I'm afraid but I'm sure you'll get through it. Good luck! ... and by the way, Hobnobs are great, but my snack of choice on a long walk is a Tunnock's caramel wafer. You will see one on your last day - watch out for it!!

Actually if you get old fashion high ankle walking boots and dubbin them up regularly, they don't get wet at all as long as you don't wade in a foot deep stream. My feet were dry the whole time using cheapo leather boots and that included my socks. They also provided added support for your ankles when walking on rocking rocks.

I'm a convert to trail shoes these days as I do much more running than walking. I used to swear by leather boots but much prefer trail shoes as they are lighter and dry much quicker if they get wet. My leather boots got wet on a walk across Scotland and didn't properly dry out for a week :-) It is most definitely personal preference though and what works for me won't be everyone's first choice, I respect that.

Loving the journey Dean. Interesting you decided you'd get wet feet even with waterproof boots so went for what would dry out. What about socks though? Waterproof Sealskinz or just get wet?
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Preston, thanks for watching. I just had my normal trail running socks and the trail shoes dry really quickly. Easier just to get wet and allow my feet to air during food/drink breaks :-) Good in summer but obviously it's a different story in other seasons.

Hey Dean, really inspirational videos mate, well done 👍 just having been on the pennine way - had to sack it off due to heatwave ( didn’t wanna kill my dog). My question is trail shoes ??? I suffered a lot of blisters using Scarpa trail shoes-any advice mate
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, thanks for watching. I bet it was disgusting walking it in this heat, I'd have postponed it too. As for trail shoes, I haven't tried the Scarpa ones myself but I'd always advise going for a dedicated running trail shoe. I've used Inov-8 and find them to be excellent, it all depends on your foot size/shape. I have some Saucony Xodus Ultra trail shoes at the moment and they've been great too, I used them for the Montane Summer Spine Challenger Race in May. The shoes I wear in this video are ASICS Fujitrabuco and they were great too.

Can’t you transfer a few files at a time throughout the day at dinner stops etc? So then there’s not so many to transfer at night.
