Hey everyone welcome back. I’m stoked to share this video with you because not only do I love the results, but it’s a great example of how different lenses and film stocks change the look and mood of a scene dramatically. Let me know what you think in the comments. Until next time

Superb images. Especially like the Pentax 67/FP4 combo. The 5th image in particular has a striking quality to it that just resonates with me.

My initial reaction to the scans was the same. I thought the 67 photos were far better in many ways, but the more I’m looking at the color 35mm photos, I like them more and more.

The colour rendition of the Portra160 images is something else for sure. The skin tones and smoothness of the tones is just as you say - a throw back to the 80’s.

thanks for great video. if you could do it again on the same conditions and equal lenses as well for me would be better, anyhow all photos were beautiful and liked them all. but for me nikon looks nicer and have kind of feeling, maybe its because Im a nikon pro.

Much preferred the film shots, the tones were on point. Be interesting to see what digital ones are like when ran through the same film stock emulations

I’ve never done one of those film emulators. I did see a guy shoot on that mode with his camera once and I was pretty surprised how accurate it was.

Awesome, I love the look of film! Film has soul and to me, digital looks to sharp if that makes sense and high ISO looks like it was taken in daylight. I mostly take photographs with a Canon 5Ds or Nikon D800 but if film processing were available everywhere like it once was I'd go back to film at least part time and fire up my F3HP and FM3a and Canon F1N and ...........................................
@JoeLyman
@JoeLyman 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. There is an unreasonable expectation of super sharpness that people have with digital that takes a bit of humanity out of the photos. I make a conscious effort to not over process my digital work. As far as the availability of film, I’m not sure where you live, but my lab is processing more film than digital work and it’s been that way for a couple of years now.

Hi Joe, love this video and would like to know what lenses and apertures you used for each camera
@JoeLyman

Hey. So, the dslr had an 85mm 1.8 and I most likely shot at around 2.0 or 2.5. The Nikon SP had the 50mn 1.4 and I shot as wide as the light would allow me to with a max 1/1000 shutter speed. Most likely the aperture was somewhere around 4.0 if I remember correctly. The Pentax had the 105mm 2.4 and I most likely shot with the same settings as the SP.

Hi, you mention using a longer lens on the Pentax quite a bit. Have you considered the 105mm 2.8 on the SP?
@JoeLyman
@JoeLyman 2 жыл бұрын
After running about 6 or 7 rolls through it now, I don’t think I’m going to use it as a portrait camera in the traditional sense like I did on this day. I’m considering getting the 85mm though just in case I do decide to do something like this again. The reason I got this camera was just to have a lighter option on adventures and for street candids. I love the SP, but I still prefer the 67 for this type of work.

Love this comparison. I don’t really think the TMax shots were that over exposed, her shirt was a bit bright white but the skin tones looked just right to me. I know your mantra is ‘keep the negs as they are’, but you can always ask the lab to rescan them with multiple passings to get a bit of contrast back in the highlights.

If I plan to make a print of a photo, I have no issue with re-scanning and making edits. The exposures on the bw’s were similar to how I was exposing portraits prior to my trip to New York earlier this year. I’m looking for darker skin tones for this style of photo now.

I used to have the Nikon S2, but ended up selling it after a short while. I could not stand the feel of the helicoid focusing system, and the annoying infinity focus lock on the lens. Beautiful looking and engineered, just not practical for moving fashion model shooting.
@JoeLyman
@JoeLyman 2 жыл бұрын
Right. That’s basically what I found doing these photos. I’ll most likely use this camera for travel photos and styled art photos. I’d definitely bring it as a back up or bonus camera though.

One wonders how one metered?
@JoeLyman

Handheld meter with the bulb toward the camera, exposed at box speed. As straight forward as it gets in the case of this roll.
@stillben
@stillben Жыл бұрын
@@JoeLyman Thank you, I have a 67ii and find the meter is better than most in camera systems but don't trust it completely. My Sekonic errs on the side of caution and underexposes by 0.5 of a stop, have you ever calibrated your meter?
@JoeLyman
@JoeLyman Жыл бұрын
@@stillben I have never and will never use an in camera meter unless I find myself in an emergency situation without a meter. As far as calibrating goes, I’ve just taken mental notes on how different films behave in various qualities of light. The shots with the Nikon were taken before I had the camera serviced, so I suspect that the slight overexposure was due to a slightly inaccurate shutter rather than a metering issue. I’ve since service the camera and haven’t had an issue since.

@@JoeLyman by nikon i think you mean the SP as the 800 stuff looks not over exposed. The b and w 800 digital look like Lindbergh's '88 beach photos.
