Theater is perhaps the oldest form of therapy: we take our conflicts and traumas, and reenact them in a safe environment. The ancients spoke of _catharsis_ in drama, the purging and purification of our desires and fears: that is still true in the best plays.

Well, when you talk about mental health directly it almost implies that there’s something wrong with people’s heads. When you talk about an outlet and a way of life, it implies that we need to facilitate a healthy environment, which is a better focus. I think.

This is what makes Colbert a pro. Driver is obviously not all that comfy doing the talk show thing. Just as obvious he's passionate about his project. Stephen lets him talk about that at length. So we the audience get to see a side of Driver that we were probably unaware of. A nicely done interview.

It was one of the great privileges of my life to see Adam Driver on Broadway in BURN THIS 3x. His love for his craft, while evident in his films, shines most brightly on the stage, and he was enthralling and captivating. The fact that he wants to foster that same love in the very people nobody ever thinks about when considering the demographic for the theater arts is just one reason why Adam Driver is, as Martin Scorsese called him, "one of the finest, if not THE finest, of his generation."

Adam brought me to tears. In the 70's, I used to teach GI's stationed in Germany who hadn't finished high school. I am an English teacher but there I taught history and political science. I have relatives in what was then Czechoslovakia. My guys had no idea what they were protecting when they went on watch over the border, or why Russian soldiers were on the other side looking at them, or how the lives of the Czechs were so curtailed by the Russian presence. Civilians with interest and heart, exactly like this thing that Jon and Adam did is real life. They were all about going back to "the World." I tried in my small way, not as powerful as Jon Batiste and Adam Driver, to bring the troops exactly the same thing. It also is a unifying force to bring all people of the Real World together. Both of these people are absolutely brilliant.

Thank you! It’s a lot easier to look back on it now than it was to deal with the men who were in the trenches every day. I was a teacher for 37 years BESIDES the three years I spent with these men. I taught in the inner city in Minneapolis before I went to Germany. It was perfect preparation because most of these men had been there in some city and were truly ready to learn how to move forward in their lives. I never felt more appreciated as a teacher. I have lived in Berlin for 31 years and taught here for 22 of the 40 years.

I love Adam for really being so articulate and hitting home why movies / theater can be so therapeutic for many people and for Steve Colbert for just allowing him to speak his mind without interrupting him because it is captivating watching another person speak passionately about a subject they hold so dear. And I like that Colbert makes Adam feel comfortable during the interview to have that space to speak freely.

Notice how Stephen goes quiet when a guest actually has _something_ to say?

What an amazing insight into the role of art in society and its own origins. As a performer myself, it's wonderful to hear the role of the actor/singer/performer articulated so well. Can't wait to see House of Gucci!

Truly, this was one of the most descriptive things I've ever heard uttered about theater in my life.

Colbert is just the best of all talk show hosts. He is so genuine doing the interviews, so understanding and sweet. Not just gibberish like everyone else. He lets the guests talk and shine. Love that about him.

I found it fascinating that Greek generals wrote plays sharing what happened on the battlefield. I never thought of plays like he described it.

Thank you, Stephen, for giving this brilliant human your entire stage. "Sorry for monologuing" New words, by Adam Driver. I love it. Who wants to bet to that John Oliver is hard as a rock, right now? 😏

Theatre is the noble art. It frequently touches people in life-changing ways. So good of Adam to be doing this inspired work for our military. Not surprised that wonderful Jon Batiste has joined him! Thanks, guys, from someone who has done her share of acting, and the wife of a Vietnam vet. ❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼💥
