Sunjoe Scarifier Review and Ugly Lawn Power Rake Update. DIY How to fix ugly lawn
Today we run a review on the sunjoe scarifier and dethatcher on a lawn that we previously power raked with the greenworks dethatcher. The lawn has seen a dramatic improvement but has a long way to go.
Our focus today is to:
1. scarify the lawn. Scarifying removes thatch and allows for better soil to seed contact. I am going to use the SunJoe scarifier to complete this task
2. overseed the lawn. We are using a kentucky bluegrass blend from barenbrug.
3. Use Tenacity herbicide to help limit the amount of weeds and annual grasses such as crabgrass that will be germinating along side the Kentucky Bluegrass that we are throwing down
4. Top dress with peat moss. If your soil is alkaline sphagnum peat moss will work. If you soil is acidic do not use the sphagnum peat.
The peat moss will provide additional nutrients, allow for water retention, and help protect the seed from the elements.
Sunjoe Scarifier Review and Ugly Lawn Power Rake Update. DIY How to fix ugly lawn
Kentucky bluegrass commonly takes up to 5 weeks to germinate. Rumor has it the Barenbrug product can germinate as fast as 2 to 3 weeks with a high germination rate.
The grass seed was donated by Barenbrug

I just got my Sunjoe Scarifier today so I immediately called off work so I could put it together and do my front and back yard both ways lolol It took me 4 hours but I kind of think I can use this for now on, instead of Aerating. It took up alot of thatch just like my old sunjoe dethatcher but this scarifier works great. I probably could of not bought a new one and just bought a scarifier blade off amazon but I was not sure if the new model scarifier blade would fit on the old model. Now I have two sun joe machines and I am completely satisfied. I fertilized afterwards with some Scotts Triple Action. My grass was already fabulous in the front yard, now thanks to this Sunjoe Scarifier It should be perfect. Thanks again.

Hello, I have a question. Is it possible to burn your grass with Scott's Triple Action. I have Kentucky Bluegrass and I scarified my grass to get out thatch then I cut it very low. It currently is not burnt, however it looks a lot less green and I cannot determine if it is from fertilizer or grass being cut so low or the reason snow Cleveland just got ? Also if it’s burnt but not dead what can I do to get Kentucky bluegrass back the way it was.
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 4 жыл бұрын
there is always a chance for fertilizer or weed killer burn. I find if you use more than 1.25lbs of N per 1000 sq ft it leave s you susceptible for a burning

@just4funallday508
@just4funallday508 4 жыл бұрын
Ginja, I found a use for the Sunjoe clippings bag, well actually just the frame. Without the clippings bag, the clippings seem to bunch up inside the Sunjoe until there is enough to overcome the flap spring, then it pushes out a pile, closes and starts accumulating again. This causes uneven contact with the lawn. I took the clippings bag off the frame, put the frame on the Sunjoe and bent it down close to the ground. Now the clipping door stays open enough to allow the clippings to come out evenly and the blades maintain better contact with the lawn.

So.. the single line stich is the front of the bag. loop stiching is the back. Face the front to you pick off any small string debris from the right side. Then pull the end of the string on the right hand side. If it looks like you're undoing a slip knot then you're doing it right my friend 😂. Learned that back in highschool when I inhaled more grass then I cut if you know what I mean 😉. One of those why do feet stink and noses run conversations.

Great channel! Something I find that works to get seed down to soil when overseeding.. Provided the lawn is bone dry, get a super long garden hose, install a nozzle of some kind and turn on the water to fill (and weight) the hose. Take the entire length of the filled (heavy) hose, and drag it over the lawn after you have spread the seed. It will act like a giant comb, and help the seed fall from the blades down into soil. Definitely works for seed, not sure about the peat moss (which I have also done by hand, that's a job!). Also, I have the Sunjoe, still works well on year 2. The scarifier is where it's at, mine has a power rake/tine attachment, but it's too gentle. I go 5 mins at a time, small breaks in between, never overheated for me. Cheers from Canada
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 5 жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying about the hose. sounds like that would do the trick. the tine dethatcher IMO is not a dethatcher but more of a debris comber. That's why I like it.

I purchased the Sunjoe a couple months ago & when I scarified my front lawn (~2000 sq') I filled two 85 gallon yard waste dumpsters packed full of thatch; I had it set at (0) & I need to go over the lawn again deeper & overseed as you did! I will probably use compost from the local recycling garden center because it's ~$40.00 a cubic yard. On a side note, I live in a transition zone "Kansas" & have cool & warm season grasses in the lawn, the Bermuda runners gave me a hard time in that they would wrap around the scarifier shaft. Thanks for the vid!!

Love your channel! And I'm glad someone's doing a review of these suspiciously lightweight and inexpensive tools. One quibble: based on the label for Tenacity, you should not be adding a surfactant to the tank when you intend to use it as a pre-emergent. It's supposed to go into the soil rather than sticking to the grass blades.

My thoughts on your seed bag... 😯 I mean, how to open your bag. I deal with bags like this all the time. 1. Ignore the long, left piece you were tugging on. You'll fight with that for hours. 2. Cut the short end of string. The one on the right side with the label facing you. 3. Find the single thread and pull it. Hope this helps someone. Thanks for your videos! I've had the sunjoe for about 4 years. Works really well. I think the control lever in the video was not installed right because mine is not floppy like that. I agree, the small bag is dumb and have thought about trying to make a bigger one. I drilled a hole in the flap and tied some cord to the handle bar to keep it open so the clumps of debris could come out freely. When the door is down the debris tends to stay in there and build up. Mark your sprinkler heads because it will chew them up and bust the tops. After a few times using mine, I sharpened the scarifier blades with a grinder so that it could truly cut down into the ground. It will pull up so much crap, so be prepared for a lot of taking and bagging. Also live in Utah.

The last tiller I used was gas powered and many years ago↝↝>share4.photo/eCultivator?ㅊ10 I got the SMALL one (11 inch) and it is VERY powerful. It takes all my strength to keep it "on track" but I mean this in a good way. I am very pleased with how powerful it is. I am only using it to resurface my lawn and to put in a garden in the backyard. Assembly instructions were a little bit confusing, but not impossible to figure out. My main complaints are minor. I think the "power connector" is a bit loose, but I imagine this is a safety feature. The tiller "kicks" a lot, so it has the potential to "fly away" and a lose connector might aid in preventing problems. Second quibble is the "connectors" for the wheels. They are just screws, so they tend to "unscrew" after even a little bit of use and the wheels fall off. Perhaps another type of connector would be better...? Other than that, excellent quality for the price. Saved me hours of work. Thank you!

I used my brand new Greenworks dethatcher (which is really a low power rake?) this afternoon and used a blower to move the dead grass. I almost abandoned the project. I did a second section this evening and used the lawn sweeper. No comparison. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done. The Honda is expensive but for thatching is far far stronger than that weak SunJoe. The scarifier is called and aerator. It is not what it could, or should, be but it works to cut slits through the grass into the soil. What I like is the Honda is one tool that can do three or four different jobs. Instead of using your hands, use a leaf rake upside down and "sweep" it back and forth.

Thanks to you and some of the other SunJoe experts, I returned a tiller bought by mistake on Amazon and exchanged it for the exact model used here.. I've yet to see any videos using this in Florida or on warm grasses. Thanks so much for your explain-as- you-go techniques for beginners and you kept the kookiness at a minimum....🤪 but the mountain backdrop made up for it !🏞️

views for days Glen! Thanks for watching and commenting. the sun joe works great on warm season you just have to be sure to make the appropraite height adjustments so the machine doesn't pick up the stolons.

I have a Zoysia lawn, and the only thing I would say is cut your grass as short as you can before scarifying. You will get much better results. I also have a reel mower, so I can cut my grass down to about 1/4 inch, and I got fantastic results, and I was able to get my soil amendments and fertilizer into soil contact instead of it sitting on the thatch layer because I cut short then scarified.

Dandelions are bad here in Utah. How to stop, prevent or get rid of them in a video would be nice. Seriously there are a few days when its hard not to breathe them in, its getting so bad.

Feel free to watch my pre emergent videos. I totally agree dandelions are out of control this season. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Peat moss in the spreader may work if you bulk it with Milo or something. I do it by hand in a thin layer with a hall full bag and a scoop, then water it in.

Tip: put mulch in wheelbarrow, rake out the clumps, then break out the leaf blower to distribute. Worked great for me and just like my Sun Joe!
