Peter, Paul and Mary perform "Puff, the Magic Dragon" live at their 25th anniversary concert in 1986. Now, two and a half decades later, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the group in the famed Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is being first released on DVD by Shout! Factory.

The lyrics for "Puff, the Magic Dragon" were based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, a 19-year-old Cornell University student. Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon", about a "realio, trulio little pet dragon."
The lyrics tell a story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff alone and depressed. (Because of the line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys", the lyrics may imply to some that Jackie Paper dies.) The story of the song takes place "by the sea" in the fictional land of Honalee (the spelling used by author Lenny Lipton, though non-authoritative variations abound.)
Lipton was friends with Peter Yarrow's housemate when they were all students at Cornell. He used Yarrow's typewriter to get the poem out of his head. He then forgot about it until years later, when a friend called and told him Yarrow was looking for him, to give him credit for the lyrics. On making contact Yarrow gave Lipton half the songwriting credit, and he still gets royalties from the song.
In an effort to be gender-neutral, Yarrow now sings the line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys" as "A dragon lives forever, but not so girls and boys." The original poem also had a verse that did not make it into the song. In it, Puff found another child and played with him after returning. Neither Yarrow nor Lipton remembers the verse in any detail, and the paper that was left in Yarrow's typewriter in 1958 has since been lost.

Lyrics:
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whenever they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Yes, I’m a 54 year old man that STILL cries when I hear this song. I could never believe how anyone could have ever thought the song was about anything other than what it was so obviously about. Hippies didn’t really lie (or really even have much of a reason to lie), had it been a “drug song” it would have only helped their standing with the hippies. The song is NOT a hippie song. It is SO much more universal than that. God Bless Peter, Paul, and Mary for their timeless gift. And RIP Mary!

Also note that 95% of the audience are ADULTS ! -:) Even the younger boy mouthing the words is probably about 10-11 years old. Note how relaxed EVERYONE in the audience is. This is real leisure music and the spoken and part sung opening about " a much maligned dragon", and that the song is earlier in the programmes as the children of the day had fallen asleep when they originally did the performance in the 1960s . Confirmed by thee woman who nods her head and you can lip read ".and that was true " What a pity that thar there are/were so many poisoned minds at the time when the song was originally written.

My Nan used to play this song when I was a child, I remember being sat in the back of my grandparents car and thinking how upbeat and brilliant the song was and I’d ask them to rewind the tape over and over. My Nan passed away a couple of years ago and she had such a beautiful soul, this song reminds me of her so much and the last chorus means so much to me. I suppose anyone who’s lost a loved one will get it. Thank you so much Peter, Paul and Mary. Your words will live forever in my heart and my mind.

I miss the magic of growing up in the 70’s and 80’s where the innocence of children were still important enough to preserve, and the morality and value system in our society were still in tact. I miss community before social media, and the freedom to dream and imagine. Thank You Peter, Paul and Mary 🙏🏼 for songs were the stories that allowed us to go on journey’s to places unimaginable.

Communities are built. The world may be too busy to acknowledge when you've found it. But, what we grow together is often more private than it should be. There's not enough ratings, there's not enough hate for these leaches to spread. Regardless, positive, beautiful messages continue to change the world for the better. This song is a perfect example of that.

That’s the thing of it, even today in 2022 it is still important to preserve the innocence and imagination of children. The world is a much smaller and uglier place today than it was in the 1960’s, ‘70’s and ‘80’s and we have to worker harder to protect the children than our parents did with us. Th e difference is that we have seen the wrongs of the past, lived through many of them and yet we are still letting our children be affected by them. I’m not a bleeding heart, a liberal and I don’t really identify as a conservative or at least far right. We have the opportunity to teach our children that it is possible to see Dr. Kings dream come true, but it can’t come true at the cost of reverse discrimination, hatred and division and it won’t just die out on its own. There needs to be a fundamental change in the way people think and it starts in the home with the parents teaching their children that everyone has equal value and is an important part of the whole. It is only then that we will get back to the times of this music, a time that was always a dream but never truly existed because of the flawed nature of the human animal that insists on seeing and making separation so they can feel or appear better than someone else. News flash people, a hand is as important as a foot it just smell a little better because the job it does allows for it to be cleaner, but that doesn’t make it more important.

4:35 That new verse has SO much more meaning now because of the crowd. They're all older people, people who were probably adults when this song came out... yet they still sung so joyously. With them, it proved that Puff never truly died. With them, Puff came back to roar that fearless roar. Puff wasn't gone, he was just waiting for his friends to come back. It's up to us to see if our dragon stays alone or roars his roar.

Tut! Tut! To anyone who doesn't believe that dragons exist :-))... Memories of this song hark back to the many, many months I spent, as a kid in the '60's, at Tadworth Court Hospital in Surrey. I wonder of the dozens of kids I saw and knew then, how many are still with us today? I count myself as one of the lucky ones to still be here. So this song brings bitter sweet memories to me, for obvious reasons. And now I'm thinking of the doctors and nurses who were just fantastic. Especially the nurses :-))... I'll wipe away a tear now.... C'est la vie.... Rest In Peace Mary. You may be gone, but your voice will not be forgotten ;-))...

I think the most alluring aspect of this song that Peter Paul and Mary’s gentle guitars and dulcet harmonies do well at highlighting, is how everybody has that small part of themselves that remembers our own “Puff.” Our imaginary friends we would spend the whole day with. That every stick was a gun or a sword or a magic wand. And there were princesses to save or bad guys to fight. And our backyard really was a vast and giant ocean that we were so brave and joyous to face. This song hearkens unto that childhood spirit and reminds us how much we miss it, and how much we should miss it. And that we should try to bring some of it back, because it’s still there with us. We just gotta wake Puff back up.

At our campfires, we have the kids bring a favourite stuffy and I have some in a bag for the adults. As they are holding them, I introduce how precious they are how we will eventually leave them behind. It just deepens the meaning for the song and makes them love it even more. Sometimes I'll have the kids talk about their stuffy and (I'm 75 and have a picture of me with a stuffed panda). It turns into a magical evening. When my daughter was about 8, she bought a rabbit stuffy for our little dog. The dog treasured it and slept with it most days. (My daughter is a Mom now) This always brings an (awww) moment to the campfire.

Spiro Agnew alleged that it was about marijuana. Actually, Peter Yarrow's college roommate, Leonard Lipton, wrote it after reading Ogden Nash''s poem "Custard the Dragon" and felt he could write a better poem. It's obviously based on old English folklore. In a way, it's similar to Toy Story, especially Toy Story 3. Andy grew up and quit playing with his toys including Woody and Buzz. In that same vein, Jackie Paper was a little boy who imagined he and Puff the Magic Dragon sailed on a ship and challenged pirates. But eventually, he grew up and quit playing such games.

There are many versions of an extended version of this song with an extra verse at the end to end the tale on a bright note, but none of them were ever sang by the trio. However, this version, by just simply making the last verse in present tense rather than past tense, really drives it for me. They're not not giving a definite good ending by literally telling us what's going to happen, but they instill the feeling of hope and that one may find their dragon again by saying that he *still* lives by the sea. Beautiful song.
