A really amazing song and story for me. I remember being about 3 or 4 years old when my grandmother played this song to me in her living room over and over telling me it was about an astronaut in outer space trying to find his way back home. She told me I have to dance really good to it to help him make it back home. I would dance as good as a 4 year old could trying to help him make it back home lol. After the song was over, I would always ask her if he made it home and she always told me no not yet, you have to try harder. Lol. I think she just enjoyed giving me a wild imagination and seeing me try so hard to get him back home. Great memories! Lol. Hope my story gave someone a good laugh and made them smile like it did me when I listened again. Good music never dies. :)

I never listen to the english version of Major Tom. It was a huuuuuge hit in Germany back in the early 80s.

It wasn't a huge hit in the US, getting to number 14, but big enough it got some decent pop radio airplay for a few weeks. I was in high school at the time and loved it. I look it up on youtube from time to time.

For some reason, Major Tom is really fascinating to me. "Space Oddity" made me afraid of space travel, tbh, because I took Major Tom as having an accident which left him to die, free floating in space. There's another interpretation that he purposely disconnected himself to end his life. In Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes", "we know Major Tom's a junkie, strung out in heaven". So there are multiple interpretations of the events of the song.

Peter Schilling (a german) was ... 2 (?) years ago in the German version of Jungle Camp (Trash TV as its best) and their he told, Davied Bowie reacted personally to him, claiming that Peters Song is clear better, and David was jealous about. Peter ofcourse is very proud about ;)

Apart from the hand-written composition, chance also played a role. Because as Peter Schilling said, he was living in a rented apartment with thin walls at the time. This meant that he had to play lise during rehearsals. This is where the charm of the piece came into play. In the studio I turned the volume up again and this effect disappeared. So, you turned the control back down and this effect was there again.

Peter Schilling who sings this took it to Bowie first and asked his permission to release it as a sequel to Bowie's Space Oddity. Bowie loved this song and told him to release it.

Greetings and Love from Köln/Cologne, Germany. Bowie for 'Space Oddity'. Major Tom shows up a lot after that. Bowie described him in his song 'Ashes to Ashes' as 'Junkie'. The song Rocket by Def Leppard (1987) names Major Tom alongside some other David Bowie characters such as Jean Genie or Ziggy Stardust. In Hallo Spaceboy (remix) (1995), produced by the Pet Shop Boys and sung by Bowie, the original Hallo Spaceboy lyrics were added dealing with Major Tom. Captain Kirk aka William Shattner covered 'Space Oddity' on his 2011 album 'Seeking Major Tom'. And the Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield sang the song in 2013 in space, on the ISS. It is not known whether Bowie commented on Peter Schilling. Personaly i think 'Major Tom' sounds better in german language than in englisch. However, a huge sucsess for Schilling arround the World. The Single was sold over 6 Million times. So, stay safe & PEACE

Can you cite a source for Major Tom being a comic character, and not a creation of Bowie's? I cannot find anything to confirm this.

The chorus almost makes me fly and the bass in the verses is so interesting. It's interesting that he says, "drifting, falling" because being in orbit is essentially falling continuously. I wonder if Peter Schilling was aware of that. You might be interested to know that David Bowie did a followup to his Major Tom story. It's a song called "Ashes to Ashes".

I grew up with NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle - New German Wave). It lasted roughly from 1980 to 1984, but it came into the public consciousness only in 1981 and after 1983 it became just another form of boring corporate sellout s#*t. There were great bands like Ideal, Neonbabies, Grauzone, Trio, Rheingold, Der Plan, Fehlfarben, Die Doraus und die Marinas (Andreas Dorau), Extrabreit, Nichts, DAF, Palais Schaumburg, Die Krupps.

It's interesting too when you realize that the entire U.S. "Space Race" was lead by a German (and unfortunately former Nazi) scientist, Werner Von Braun... so was this an homage to Von Braun? Maybe not, but interesting nonetheless.

It's not a cover. It's an original song that only takes the lyrical theme from a Bowie song. And it wasn't the only such song, which just goes to show how Bowie always managed to stumble onto themes that stirred the imagination. I miss him.
