I'm surprised it isn't a normally closed circuit - that way any broken wire is detected.

That's actually smart In case of electrical fault it would shut down the generator I'm guessing there is some kind of additional safety device like something that measures the frequency and if it gets too high to slow the generator down as well

I was about to post the same comment. It's an engineering principle to fail to a safe state.

@@badatpseudoscience Short of a catastophic failure in the generator or gearbox, if this one even needs a gearbox, these machines can't really overspeed when it is actually tied to the grid. There are a bunch of other safeties that either of the two former scenarios would set off, and most likely more modernized reluctor type system also monitoring the RPM. But no reason to delete a perfectly functional additional level of protection. That turbine spends 99.5%+ of its life tied to the grid, and in the point when its not there are human eyeballs monitoring it. A broken wire being able to take a plant offline is a far less desirable set up. Generalized principles can NEVER be applied to all applications. For example in aviation many systems are designed to fail to an on state, because suddenly losing power due to a non critical issue is far more dangerous than the equipment having the potential to tear itself apart/let out the smoke if a failure is not properly managed.

Oh man, I remember when I was little (probably about 6 or so) I got the chance to tour a hydroelectric dam and I remember having a great time, it was with a class of collage students and apparently I asked more questions than them! I just wish I could get the chance to go back and fully appreciate it! Awesome video as always Chris :)

The run out on your machines is horrendous. Seriously in need of alignment. The expensive part is you ran them like this, so the thrust bearings will need to be rebuilt. and all the guide bearings, packing boxes, shaft sleeves and runner seal rings are shot.
@rustblade5021
@rustblade5021 3 жыл бұрын
i'd bet there's an issue with the foundation or ground shifting. rebuilding without addressing that would probably just make the problem worse

@@LordOfSilense nah, old school manufacturing tolerances were just as tight as they are now. Saying that is an insult to the machinists of the past.
@gus_kilpatrick

I'm randomly replying many months later (it's a long story why I'm watching slip ring videos) but: some slip rings are intentionally machined with runout to induce dither in the brushes. Keeping the brushes moving back and forth is one way of preventing them from sticking in the spring-loaded brush holder, so as they wear away they maintain pressure/conductivity.

@@Physicsduck the mercury switch will be normally open (closes the circuit on an overspeed). To answer Christopher's question; there are other ways to ensure that you have good contact. One of the simplest is to have a resistor across the mercury switch. When the switch is open during normal operation, you can in essence measure the resistance. If the switch closes (overspeed) the resistance goes to zero and you know you've got a problem. If the circuit opens, the measured resistance would go to infinity, and you know you have a different kind of problem.

How dose the increased water flow not spin the turbine faster
@zyeborm
@zyeborm 4 ай бұрын
the turbine is synced to the grid, full load or no load it will go that speed. More water just means it's pushing harder doing more work at the same speed
@AndrewFremantle
@AndrewFremantle Жыл бұрын
Your statements sound contradictory to me - You call this an "Overspeed Governor", while I think the correct term for what you describe would be an "Overspeed Shutdown" or "Overspeed Trip". In my mind, "Governor" implies it plays a role in governing something, and would instruct the turbine to *slow down a bit*, not to "shut down". Regardless, really cool stuff.
