Thanks for this training segment. Many IFR pilots are not aware how straight forward picking up an airborne clearance really is. Good thing you got as filed.....albeit simple route anyway. Keep up the good work.

Great video, as always. For anyone who hasn't, check out Alana at Culver Props, she is a true artisan making traditional wooden props. Also really happy that Kim is moving forward with her training. She has already cleared one of the biggest hurdles, talking to ATC, which is a great head start!

Great video - you guys just nearly flew over my home time near Gatlinburg TN KGKT where I use to keep my plane until I purchased my Cessna 340 and now I keep it at KTYS. Stop buy for lunch someday.

On your way to Greenville at 22.17 you were just past Triple Tree Aerodrome, one of the longest grass runways in the U.S. over 7000 Ft of Smooth grass.

Controller did a good job with the IFR pick up. Basically if you are below the MEA/MVA the controller may not issue any directional guidance until you are at or above that altitude. So the responsibility falls on the pilot to get to that altitude. If the pilot cannot provide their own terrain/obstruction clearance to the minimum altitude you will be told to maintain VFR or if unable you will be handles as an emergency, with paperwork to follow. So it’s best if you can request your IFR clearance when you are VFR at a legal IFR altitude.

I only pick up clearance in the air if it’s VFR. Otherwise I will use the RCO or the 800# on the ground.

Quick question: Do you fill up both wings by carrying the nozzle to two sides? Or as you are filling one side, a pump distributes that fuel to the other wing? Thanks

There is a fill port on each wing. It does not have a single point.

It must've been a while since you picked up a clearance by phone on the ground. The 800 number has been gone for over a year now, replaced with direct phone numbers for TRACON and Center listed in the Chart Supplement.

You are correct. However when you are unfamiliar with an area you can still call the 800# and they will give you the correct number for the area.

@@BaronPilot yes, you can always call FSS and ask for the number instead of looking it up in the CS or EFB. I'm actually surprised it's not touchable in Foreflight.

When you use autopilot do you still need to use the rudders or does autopilot take care of it?

I don’t have a yaw damper so it doesn’t do anything with the rudders.

With a twin engine and having two engines, is rudder correction minimized? I remember flying in my sister’s single engine plane always needing rudder control because of engine torque.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't a chandelle a precision aircraft control maneuver?

It's a maximum performance, climbing, 180 degree turn. In the U.S. and many other countries, it's a required maneuver on the commercial certificate flight test.

@@flyingsic lol yep! Our field elevation is at 4400 and there are mountains in every direction above 10500. In the summertime in Utah we see ridiculous density altitudes. One of the main reasons I switched to turbine. The safety margin goes away pretty quick with 8-10thousand foot density altitudes.
