Honestly, my favorite part in the entire show was when Superman tried to help the same criminals he fought in the other episodes. He was willing to break them out despite being dangerous criminals. It's beautiful, and it's all the more tragic that they happily attacked him. It's even implied most of them will not care about this kind act and will face him again gladly in seasons to come. But the fact Superman was willing to do it speaks volume, and knowing Big Blue, he'll do it again no matter the outcome. Actually, I like that this Superman doesn't even interact with the cops, could open up for more "Champion of the Oppressed" stories in the future. Especially since it's confirmed that in the next season we will see Lex Luthor and I am curious about how that will go since despite the obvious story-telling, we haven't seen writers delve into modern-day ultra-capitalist Lex Luthor going up against a quasi-socialist "Champion of the Oppressed" Superman. I also think that going back to Superman's Jewish roots is absolutely a good idea, especially today as the United States' immigration population continues to grow. I am not even Jewish, but as the son of immigrants I can relate to Superman as I can imagine many immigrants can. Hell, oppressed groups as a whole can relate to the Man of Steel and there should be no shame in showing that. After all, he is the Champion of the Oppressed, and as Grand Morrison has said, he's a working-class guy. He's one of us!

@@TheFranchiseCA The thing is, even Jesus Christ from the Bible is a better and more likeable character than Jesus-Superman. Jesus was friendly and compassionate, sympathising with downtrodden and despised groups of people and never considering anyone beneath him or unworthy of his aid, just so long as they were sincere about wanting to be better. Most of the rogues galleries were kinda forgettable and three of them were imported from the rogues galleries of flash, starman/black canary and the teen titians. Ivo was a good villian, but I agree that it was odd that they named him Ivo instede of Raymond Jenson, I.C. Harris, Rudy Jones or alex Allston. he was clearly meant to be like stark so I guess tony was the connection or maybe its because of the similarities between amazo and parasite and the Amazon parody...? Then Mallah and brain were good guys which is fine in my book, waller has continued to be pure evil which is disappointing if not surprising. Why Captain America was a better Superman than Superman: They never tried to make him Jesus, or perfect. I love the fact that Clark has very little idea about his Kryptonian past. He isn't defined by the set expectation of Jor-El, he's free to make the choice of who he wants to be. It also unshackles him from the idea of "Clark Kent is how Superman sees us". Instead, Clark is and always was Clark Kent, Smallville farm boy and reporter. He just also happens to be Superman. And so we look up to Superman not because he's powerful, but because he's simply a good man doing the right thing. Clark Kent views stopping an alien invasion and helping a lost kid find their parents as equally important ways to help.

The smallest detail which I love is how Superman is saving people long before he gets the suit. He isn't "playing a role" or "doing a job" or "fulfilling a duty" by becoming 'Superman.' The only thing I would add is Superman is my favorite comic book character because, he shows you can have a family and save the world. "What do you give the man who has everything?" Superman is what a man should strive to be. He is man first, and Lois makes him super. Jesus is God.

Thank you for making these videos. As a Jewish American who thinks a lot about Jewish representation in media, I find them very meaningful. And I think you do a great job with them. I think a supporting fact that you didn't mention in this video is the Superman and Lois TV show, which also mostly eschews Jesus imagery. The thematic layer that S&L adds on to superman is literalizing the father metaphor. It takes this from the comics obviously, but just like his marriage to Lois, it has lasted because it felt additive to the character. I tend to think of the larger division in superman characterization not as christian vs jewish, but as alien vs human. And I think the more alien superman gets read more as a christ-allegory. Exemplified by Morrison stories and Waid stories. Morrison writes a superman that is above it all. Their Kal El's super senses make him a sort of shepherd and protector, but never really one of us, as seen in JLA, Action Comics and All Star. Waids Clark is a human first, a man who does what he can to protect his home and family, and he sees the whole planet as his family, as seen in Birthright and Kingdom Come. Even in Kingdom Come, when he suffers his greatest tragedy, he goes back to the land, to create a very human memorial to the people of Kansas. In Birthright, he becomes a journalist because he's good at it, not so he can monitor the world's threats.

I think one of the best Superman stories is one that doesn't feature Superman for most of it. After he died in the 90's, the "Reign of the Supermen" storyline involved four would-be heirs to his legacy arising, each embodying a different part of Superman. The remote and judgemental alien, the happy-go-lucky power fantasy, the everyman hero who just wants to help people, and the ruthless guardian of humankind.

Clark slowly unlocking his powers is a really neat way to let him grow and explore him as a person. He never feels invincible or too strong, which makes the action have more stakes. It leads to nice moments like jumping in front of a laser to protect Lois without knowing if he'd survive. Jack Quaids lends him this sort of dorky everyman energy that makes you want to root for him. The clashes with Lois about doing "bad stuff" are always so delightful and fun to watch. I think this is the first Superman show/movie where he feels completely like a normal guy.

This was really cool. Unfortunately can't speak to the elements at the end (I have a Religious Studies degree but it's all Hinduism and Christianity and I'm nowhere near familiar enough with magical girl anime) but I have been really impressed with how the series handled secret identities. I've been pretty jaded for a while on the concept of secret identities protecting ones loved ones, especially when you're keeping that information from those people themselves. It denies them the ability to make decisions about their safety, the context to know when they're in danger and it denies the hero support, so for a while I was sort of reflexively balking at every hero whose first impulse was to hide their identity. MAWS managed to make it feel very natural though, in a way I originally read through queer theory and the concept of coming out, but which as you say reads really well in terms of Jewish identity as well given the prominence of anti-semeticism. If we consider secret identities not as a way to keep other people safe but as a way to keep the hero safe from threats their powers won't protect them from (rejection, disapproval, discrimination in the case of characters like the X-men, Superman or heroes from minority backgrounds) we open up another, actually coherent front from which to examine secret identities AND we reveal a level of vulnerability we rarely associate with superheroes that can be plumbed for character conflict. Given how much Superman I read back in the day it's been incredible to watch a show that seems not only to show new sides of the character, but to reposition a trope that is usually kind of cliche and clumsy, into a solid emotional tool in telling us about Clark's relationship with his heritage, his body and his friends and I'm glad they didn't invoke the 'I need to protect them from knowing about me' nor string it out for two long. While I might have liked a little more emphasis placed on it before Ivo's introduction episode, it's honestly way better than most of what Spider-man or Batman have ever managed with the same concepts (not to pick those two out but they just happen to be the two that originally jaded me on the concept of secret identities).

This show has truly been something special and truly gives new generations a fantastic take on the character of Superman, who stays true to who he is and maintains his wholesome, earnest and kind heart with an amazing supporting cast of equally interesting and lovable depictions of Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, that have instantly become fan favourites. The Clark and Lois dynamic is pitch-perfect, played wonderfully by Jack Quaid and Alice Lee, plus this take onJimmy Olsen might in fact be my favourite take on Jimmy Olsen in media. Some of the villains in the show may not be great and some may be a downgrade from their comic counterparts like Silver Banshee, Deathstroke, Livewire, but aside from them, villains like Parasite, General Lane, Waller and Mr. Myxzptlk are all great and unique takes on these characters and villains. The animation has also been consistently great and giving Superman an anime-esque show was a stroke of genius that I hope they apply to more hypothetical shows set in this universe, could you imagine a Flash or Green Lantern animated show set in this universe? I cannot wait for Season 2 as this show has the potential to be this generation's new Spectacular Spider or Batman: The Animated Series, but for Superman, which couldn't make me happier as a Superman fan

I really liked how they linked all the villains to something to do with Superman's past. Made the world feel more cohesive. Superheroe lore can be kinda... overwhelming and bloated, to a newb or casual fan trying to dig deeper. It starts to feel pointless trying to keep track of it all. This is much simpler and makes sense narratively. The history of comics explains the messier lore, but not everything has to be based solely on the source material, and I adore that they give homage to them without relying on them. It makes me want to look stuff up without feeling like I need to memorize a bunch of stuff to fully understand what's happening. It's just fun "other realities" info at that point, so ironically I'm more likely to care.

The part I hated the most of the recent movies (and maybe the Reeves one) is when Jor-El straight up tells him that he's morally superior to everyone and must teach them humane values or whatever. Like, I get that he can punch asteroids, but does he actually have a Morality Superpower that makes him unlike any human in that regard? He's just some dude - and alternate versions of himself have grown up evil merely because they were raised wrong (and that includes other evil kryptonians like Zod)

When I talked about how I prefer this superman over the overpowered one in other comment sections, a couple of people responded with "but thats a crucial part of his character". Like, it doesn't have to be, they don't really understand superman empathetic and caring persona if they think he has to be overpowered to be a "super" man

I think you hit the nail on the head with the resurrection theme specifically for Superman, where it's a heroic sacrifice but not in the service of some sort of higher message. It seems that so often Hollywood tries to tie everything into a giant moral dilemma to seem more than superficially deep. Instead of seeing these moments and choosing how we are inspired by them, we are being told *how* to interpret them and it's incredibly insulting as an audience member. I didn't initially like this show, but I have to admit that it grew on me. Watching your videos is giving me a better understanding of the light-hearted feel they're going for, and it is a fun and refreshing new take on the character and the themes he represents.

I love this version of Superman. I love that his biological father speaks to him in a completely alien language and he struggles desperately to piece together the context of whatever the hell he’s saying. It’s one thing to have a way to beat the guy to a bloody pulp, but to show him things about his potential origins within reason, suggesting that he was meant to be nothing but a true monster, and buddy I cried along with him too. 😭

Also missed the obvious here. Superman as Samson, the champion of the people with special powers. He is committed to doing good and to relieving the oppression of the people. You can throw in a little Moses as well in Superman's origin. The Superman as Jesus thing, especially in the Snyder film always rankled, along with the hints of his adopted mother as Mary, mother of Jesus.

The show gave me hope that Superman can be presented well to a new audience. You can do dark Superman stories while not making Superman dark himself. I love the anime inspired art style which a lot of young people are into these days. Hopefully Superman Legacy can capture the essence of Superman like this show did.

I think what makes Superman stand out the most in my opinion from other superheroes is while yes all good heroes are driven by an empathy/responsibility oriented ideology, Superman does things a little different. The best Superman stories are the ones who ask the question: "can Clark redeem his villains?" We all know he can beat them but it's asking a different question on human nature. Clark may not be human but he is a man, and he knows that all men are susceptible to evil, fear, and hate. Even himself to an extent. But he wants others to believe in themselves that they can become better people. And it's this uplifting message yet also grounded approach that I think Adventures does well. Something that I think is also interesting is how superman stories, even Adventures, makes the humans Cark seeks to help end up hating him for no good reason. They feel challenged and afraid of what he's capable of. The Fermi Paradox is a question that proposes "if life should be abundant in the universe, why don't we see any aliens?" and a possible answer to this question is because they are being wiped out or actively hiding to avoid being wiped out. Superman is an alien to the American military, an unchecked invader with godlike powers, who must be killed before he even CAN turn evil. It's the fermi paradox but applied to us. Humans wish to wipe out Clark because he is POTENTIALLY dangerous. Despite being a good man, all they can see is a threat and while this is only season 1, he manages to change Lois' mind from simply seeing Superman as an anomaly she can get the scoop on, into a man she loves and is willing to protect from a person like Viki Vale who is a more successful version of the woman Lois wanted to originally become.

My personal head canon is that Johnathan comes from a long line of Kansan Methodists, but Martha comes from a family of Jewish immigrants and crossed cultural lines in falling in love with Jonathan, similar to the Smallville show. As a Methodist from Kansas with Jewish ancestry, a vision of Superman like that really speaks to me.
@rivera229
@rivera229 8 ай бұрын
I recommend checking out Tom De Haven's It's Superman! It's a good take on Superman and takes place in the 30s. In it, Martha is a religious Christian and super popular at the church. Jonathan on the other hand is depicted as more of an Agnostic or Atheist, having left the church long ago due to seeing a reverand refuse entry for an indigenous family. It explains Superman's more progressive values, which the book goes out of it's way to depict Superman as a Champion of the Oppressed type character. But I hope I am not being rude or anyhing, as I think your idea is fantastic and having Martha being Jewish adds a level connection not seen!

Heroes, and especially superheroes, are more than one thing, and that is by design; they are intended to be symbols of what are the best parts of society, and what can be its best elements. The villains they face, by design, are intended to act as the symbols against what they stand for or some aspect of the hero taken to an unhealthy extreme that is more dangerous than anything else. Some of the best examples of this are seen in various series, but especially in the classic DCAU series, and a lot of the same DNA is tapped into in My Adventures With Superman, more so than most of the other animated DC projects between it and the DCAU. Superman, at his core, is a fundamentally good person, and so is Batman; they have different approaches, but they still both act as symbols. Superman is this bright symbol of what it means to be someone doing good because it's just the right thing to do, inspiring others around him to be better people by setting examples they can point to, if not emulate themselves. Batman, on the other hand, operates on a premise that seems opposed to Superman's, being someone who only makes himself known to the criminal element when he wants to scare them into messing up or has no other real options afforded him at the moment. However, he is still doing what he can to improve things for the people around him. Batman has a caring heart; he tries to empathize with his villains, give them chances to be better people, and even sets up programs in his civilian identity to help make those opportunities to be better people more accessible. Both do what they can to give others the tools to be better people, just in different ways, and are disappointed and disheartened when the people they are trying to help actively choose to disregard and ignore those tools for becoming better people. I know I ranted on about Batman in a video about Superman. Still, I think it was unavoidable, especially if the next season of My Adventures With Superman starts opening up its world and has Clark meeting those other heroes on the DC roster, both well-known and not-so-well-known. But Superman and Batman are pretty intertwined with each other on a few different levels, and have been for a few decades now.

We can mostly thank bronze age Superman author Elliot S. Maggin for making Superman Space Jesus. I am not hating on the man, he wrote some amazing Superman stories, but unfortunately the Jesus Analogy is often the only influence less talented writers have adopted for the character. This is why the My Adventures with Superman feels so fresh and yet faithful to the source material.

This is the only Superman series I've seen where I feel like "Clark Kent" is not his secret identity, but who he really is. It's the only Superman I actively support, because he feels like he needs the support. It feels like he could lose, but I don't want him to. It's not about what Superman can do or who he can defeat, it's about wanting Clark Kent to keep himself and the people he cares about safe while he finds himself.

I've always liked Superman but the thing I liked best about him is how he's used to explore philosophical topics. "What would a person who always chooses to do the right thing and has the power to accomplish that DO in a given situation?" 'What would that person be like if they grew up in Soviet Russia?' 'What would that person do if he was presented with a kill or be killed moment?' 'What would that person do if he needed to prove his ideology of nonviolence to a blood thirsty world?'' To me that's fascinating. It also produces a lot of clunkers as far as stories go but that comes with the territory with a character who's almost 90 years old at the time of writing this comment. Having said all that, the character himself hasn't been AS interesting (to me personally) as the stories and ideas that arise from him. That also comes with the territory of having been written by so many writers with different takes on him. Until this series. This is my new favorite show. Every fan of Superman has THEIR Superman. Maybe for you it's 'The regular Kansas Farm boy who has powers. Maybe it's 'The immigrant trying to balance rediscovering his roots with the life he's made in the only home he can remember.' Maybe for you personally it's the 'Punches really hard' guy. For me, in this show, I've found mine. This is MY Superman. I love this Clark for all his Character strengths and flaws in this series. He's such a lovable goof. I can't express enough how much I adore him in this show.

I did feel they handled the “identity gets revealed” trope a lot better here than in Invincible (Season One). Both Lois and Amber begin to suspect their partner of being a superhero, but their paths differ in that Amber doesn’t have any particular baggage (unlike Lois with her trust issues since her childhood) and still chides Mark for not being there despite all the stuff happening to him, and doesn’t grow out of it or receive any pushback from her side. Meanwhile, Clark does stand up a lot more for preserving his own identity and calls Lois out. Yet both Clark and Lois do manage to put aside those resentments by being more open to each other.

Honestly, Clark's magical girl transformation is so perfectly the trope, you can watch any video about anime magc girl transformation symbolism. It is that to a T. The short version, which iimo is the real thing anyway, is just... good old metamorphoses/transformation allegories (not the novellete, the general concept, maybe you could refer to ovid's one), but with a now distinct and tropey visual style associated with it for the act of transforming. It really is what it says on the tin, a some sort of transformation (and it can be any of its varieties) presented in a seemingly or literally magical manner. Not a separate tradition or trope, but a visual style of it. A style that has origins in a desire to make the transformation seequence visually interesting since it is a visual medium, big influences by classic western animations and budget saving techniques (like repeated stock animation) - no surprise He-man and Shera looked so much like the Japanese versions, they had similar influences and driving forces. You could make a point of how the metaphorses in the tropey magical girl transformation happens with vibrant colors and plenty of blinding lights are there to really make heretofore hidden aspects of a character so visible they shine and entirely unmissable afterwards... but that is quite literally just facetes of the transformation/metamorphoses trope it is trying to be a visualization of in the first place.
