and ya kno..... the process of major repairs requiring lots of part/bolt/screw/nut/connector/whatever removal makes the tech implant lots of data in da brain as to where everything goes. So maybe learning all of those history dates in school were appropriate to FORCE the brain to memorize. As in - - - - > to me the HARDEST element of repair is having a system of reconstructing the teardown. So MUCH stuff!

IPD USA has a great explanation about OEM, OES, etc. For some Volvo parts, the parts are actually made by a different company (e.g. aisin) and sold for cheaper by those companies, and sometimes they even sell revised, improved parts. If the part is bought directly from the original manufacturer, they will be cheaper except they don't come in Volvo box or they might have the Volvo logos filed off the parts. At least IPD may recommend a good aftermarket part over the original if the aftermarket is improved in some way such as better durability. It is real interesting stuff ! Sounds like Toyota has made that phaser part themselves since it has their name stamped on it, or a company working with Toyota, but how did that aftermarket company get that genuine Toyota part?

Good job, Ivan! Possibly the spring broke first and the carnage inside came as a consequence - those 90º bends on such strong springs are a weak point that has to hold all the force. Brake pad shims are optional :-) Great that customer was very pleased - that's the important part.

The turn radius is doable but tight. Toyota engineers could have made an different design. Maybe that is the one, which was unavailable? I worked for a short time at Imatra Ovako Steel mill in the 1980's. At special products unit we made gun barrels for Finnish military, camshaft steel for Ford Germany, coil spring steel for Volvo and Saab. Volvo gave us an medal, for delivering spring steel, which did not crack even when the car was absolutely totaled in the accident. The Volvo accident investigation team could almost every time dig out intact coil springs out of an total wreck. That is the high quality spring steel what Toyota designed the original phaser with and became a victim of sub standard steel later. It is an art to produce this high quality steel. As Asian producers got to the the market with lower prices we Finns were unable to compete with, that is the result. Toyota original design failing due spring steel not conforming in reality with original specification in the long term. To make spring steel to last bending for the life of an Toyota, which is more than 180 k miles, cheaper steel is not good enough.

@@jannepo I completely agree - It is an art to produce the high quality steel required for these springs. Maybe cutting costs (or a change in contractors) was one of the factors.

Very common issue on the “AR” family engines. In my case it was a venza with the 1AR engine. Made sure I took out the timing chain cover and also remove the bottom plate to take out shattered metals from the cam sprocket(exhaust side). Here is one thing I also considered making me take out the entire chain cover. Timing could have jumped and didn’t want to take that risk of not setting my points correctly. Well done

One thing to be super cautious about is removing the cam caps. The valve springs have upward tension on the cam lobes and removing the caps little by little alternating them all until most tension is gone is real important as there are some risks that the spring tension might crack the cam if not evenly removing those caps. It does make sense.

My neighbor has a 2008 that smokes like a chimney upon startup in addition to rattling. Seems they used substandard piston rings that year. Since the owner did such a good job with oil changes (hence the clean engine) I wonder if he/she attempted a front brake job and left out the spring clip shims on the front brake pads? GREAT VIDEO!

Really? What's the evidence? McDonald's doesn't have union but I somehow doubt that translates to better working attitude if they pay very little. Working attitude is more about giving proper compensation and safety to encourage good work rather than yes vs no union. Union only exists because not all employers properly compensate or ensure safety. They didn't exist at one point and we had child labor and factory workers weren't allowed to talk to each other! That's why unions started! (And you died in factory fires because they didn't care about safety)

Smashing repair ivan :-D the owner is lucky you were doing the repair. If the car was sent to an unknown repair shop, the owner might have to sell a kidney to afford it lol. Dealer ships... lets not go there lol.
