I remember Mythbusters tested the upside down boat air pocket thing. The problem is that the air pocket would be so buoyant that there is no way you could hold it down underwater with just a couple of men's body weight.
@jerodast
@jerodast Ай бұрын
Archimedes principle! The buoyancy would be equal to the weight of the water displaced. Imagine filling that air bubble with water - probably pretty damn heavy. With that said...get a real small air pocket and it should work, right? Don't forget the boat's weight also pushes back on the buoyancy... I figured the flaw could be that the boat is (mostly) watertight, but not completely airtight.
@VelkanAngels
@VelkanAngels Ай бұрын
@@jerodast - Wouldn't change the fact, that they wouldn't even have been able to walk underwater, even if they weren't holding an object with very strong buoyancy, though. I have an old diving helmet in my basement. It's solid iron and I can't even lift it halfway off the ground. That's the kind of weight it takes for someone to be able to walk on the bottom of the ocean, even if they weren't holding onto a wooden boat (which is in and of itself buoyant) with a huge air pocket inside xP.

I've heard that the "pirate" accent was from the original Treasure Island movie. It was simply the way Robert Newton(Long John Silver) decided to talk for the character. Partly due to his natural accent, but with some possible embellishment. After that everyone just decided that's how pirates talked.

Fun story… I actually know the guy who made all the swords for this movie. I was in high school at the time, and the father of a friend of mine landed the contract to make all the swords. Every sword you see, made by hand, by a highly skilled sword master. When we all graduated, instead of getting grad rings, he made us swords. Very cool! Geoffrey Rush (Barbosa) actually does the usual, most stereotypical pirate accent if you want to practice lol. His is a very good example, and although it IS an actual accent here in parts of the UK, it was adopted as the quintessential pirate accent by one particular actor; Robert Newton for his role in long John silver. Obviously he did a great job because it stuck for almost all pirate characters to come!

I've seen like 20 reactions to this movie and at no point have anyone not understood what they were doing with the canoe. Many have simply pointed out the FACT, that it's impossible to do in reality, which makes it jarring to see (albeit cool-looking).

One of my favorite movies ever. I had been in the Navy for about seven years when this came out and it captured perfectly how much I loved being in the Navy and going out to sea. And how much I love the ocean. I knew I was going to love this movie the first time Captain Jack Sparrow appears on screen. And I am one of those who will call him only Captain Jack Sparrow. It seems wrong to say his name without Captain in front of it. I also love Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in these movies. The score composed for this movie is beautiful. My favorite scene is the end, with Captain Jack on the Black Pearl when he says Bring me that horizon.

This, and also the later movies (especially from #4 onward) tried to make Jack the main character, proving that they'd failed to understand that what makes Captain Jack Sparrow so compelling isn't the wacky antics, it's the _mystery:_ we don't know what's driving Jack, what he's planning, or even whose side he's on until the climax of the film. That's great for a supporting character, but for a protagonist it's a lot harder to get audiences invested.

The idea that Corsets are painful is a mix between it being a Hollywood myth, and the fact that many cheap productions just buy one size and, as I'm sure the Ms. Is aware, like wearing the wrong size of a bra, it hurts to wear an incorrectly fitted Corset. EDIT: The blowing up Intercepter was actually a model of the real ship they used for the shots. Cause, you know, blowing up someone else's boat is generally considered bad manners.

I was going to say that the green apple that Jack Sparrow was eating looks like a Granny Smith apple, which are green. But Granny Smiths originated in Australia in 1868, which is well after the timeline for Pirates of the Caribbean (1650 - 1726).

While I have come to like movies 2 & 3 (except for the other 2), the first movie still holds up far better than any of them to this very day. Hard to imagine that this movie is turning 21 years old (as of 2024). I remember when this movie first came out. Ah, such simpler times. Also, Keira Knightley was probably my first crush.

It seems like the two of you think the apple was unripe because it was green. Of course, it was Granny Smith, which is green when it is ripe. They are tart but are also one of the most popular apples around.

With one exception (No spoilers), you two just embarked on an *EXCELLENT* Series with some incredible characters! Johnny Depp *IS* Captain Jack Sparrow personified (Can't imagine any other Actor achieving it so well).

They were lightening the ship to try and lose the Black Pearl in the Shoals.......the Shoals is an area of water around an island or rocky crags where it's very shallow and a ship can get stuck or heavily damaged on the bottom if it tries to traverse these zones. By lightening the load on their ship they make their draft (area of the ship that is under water) less and thus could potentially glide over the Shoals while the bigger heavier ship like the Black Pearl would get stuck

Commodore, I believe is just shy of an admiral. There would be a little bit of a fancy party for it, especially in the colonies because it'd be so rare. It was extremely rare for admirals to be commissioned in the new world as well (because admirals tend to be more politicians than sailors so they'd always be close to the throne unless specifically ordered to sail by the king). Lord Admiral Nelson was a little bit of an exception to this. He was very much a sailor, but his loyalty and fervor to the crown impressed the king and his subordinates alike.

Yep, it's the rank above a captain and below a rear admiral. Although historically it was a job description rather than a rank, for a captain who was in command of a squadron of ships rather than just his own.

Because it always comes up because this movie makes a big deal of a falsehood: a properly made and fitted corset is not only not uncomfortable nor painful, but actually quite supportive and comfortable. And no one was tight-lacing in this period - that's a purely Victorian and later practice.
