Be sure to use a Voltage converter! If you are on a 120v area use a voltage transformer to 100v or the ps3 will deteriorate over time! (It will overheat more than it should)

@@jorge3997 nope, not true. The FAT models can handle all voltages. I own several NTSC and NTSC-J Fat Models and you don't have to use voltage transformers. Btw: If you jailbreak the console you can also play Region Free PS1 / PS2 games.

Just think that all you need is the bare minimum to coat the surface lightly to take up the micro imperfections of the surface right. Pea sized drop in the middle of the chip, let the heat sink spread it out by clamping down on it, done deal brother.

Yep CECHA00 has PS2 CPU and GPU on the motherboard. The PS3 I have CECHC03 doesn't have the PS2 CPU.

@@stephenbosci1213 I’ve also now got a CECHA00 and with custom firmware I can play PAL Region PS2 games. However not all PAL games will work due to a display mode issue and will black screen during the loading process. I have 2 CECHC03 consoles.

Definitely get a PS3. It's easy to hack and you have a ton of PS1, PS2, PSP, and PS3 games to choose from. And if you want to go for older 8 bit and 16 bit games there's always Retroarch.

A very famous Footballing name you have there :) I remember Valderrama from World Cup 98 for Columbia. I bet the CECHA01 cost a fair bit as their value has risen a lot? I would try and get one too as if you CFW it you can use ANY region PS1 and PS2 games on it :)

I actually have a CECHL01 ps3 but is having issues with the NEC/TOKIN capacitors and randomly turns off in games like The Last of Us and i used to play a lot of PS2 and PS1 games from any region (i have CFW installed on it). I recommend u getting a CECHA01 because it is the best for playing any ps2 games and with CFW it will last u much longer :)

The good thing is some of the glitching PS2 games have HD remasters on PS3 (Tekken Tag Tournament, Metal Gear Solid 3, and the Ratchet and Clank Trilogy).

Ps3 slim cfw ps2 emulation is the method I've used just recently, its actually pretty reliable most games either have minor issues or no issues at all, one's that can't be played are very few.

Yeah, I totally forgot the PAL version omitted 1080i mode completely, what a shame...

Even if I run the NTSC Version it still runs in slow motion. Now this isn't because my PS3 is a PAL machine because the PS3 switches between 50 and 60p (50 and 60hz) depending on what game you are running. Bear in mind that my PS3 is a CECHC03 which is a Partial Backwards Compatible machine meaning the PS2 CPU isn't in this console only the GPU. The CPU is emulated by the PS3 Cell Processor. I think this is the cause of it running in slow motion and not because of any PAL / NTSC issues. All other NTSC games I run on this PS3 run at full speed with no issues.

@@DaveDoc1984 gotcha I was thinking about that earlier of which model you had... I have the original day one model and a slim and I've never really had any problems with mines granted I don't use the day one model to much now adays.. I found it easier to just buy a PS2 slim and then get a pair of HD pound cables for 30 bucks on Amazon.. The real trick that I've found is to hook up your systems to a smaller HDTV nothing over a 19 inch the less stretching to fit the screen the better the picture will look unless u have a that'll let u display in 4:3 or 16:9.. @@alexvswrld No not really. When you play a PS2 game the PS3 outputs the display at 480i or 480p via HDMI, so it doesn't look pixelated to me looks very clear compared to the actual PS2 display..

I have a decent gaming PC and I use pcxs2. It's not great. A lot of games have weird glitches and problems. Only use it if you really don't care or want to test a game before you buy it.

Okay so my CPU is ancient its an Intel Core i7 2600K overclocked to 4.6ghz. I have 16GB's of DDR3 RAM Corsair Vengeance and my Graphics Card is an Nvidia GTX 1080. Windows 10 Pro is the Operating System I use and I run an SSD as my main Hard Drive.

Just to put things into perspective, I have an i5 2520m laptop with 8GB ram and no dedicated gpu (so stuck on Intel HD3000). I've tested only two games with PCSX2 - Odin Sphere ran full speed and Shadow of the Collossus ran in the range of 80%-100% most of the time (it would dip a bit under 80% on boss fights). You really only need a strong PC to run it if you're upscaling and not using any hacks and tweaks in the emulator, so going for full precision emulation.

I’m running it on a slim thru emu it runs at 720.

I would say yes it is if playing PS2 games is a priority to you. There are some things you can do to prolong the life of your PS3 (delid the CELL and RSX, New Thermal Paste under and on top of the IHS, CFW and a more aggressive Fan Profile to keep the temperatures down).

It can look a little better if you have smoothing turned on and it can upscale the resolution to 1080p on BC models and 720p on non-BC models. The internal rendering resolution doesn't change, so don't expect them to magically look like HD PS3 games.

Which is exactly what I have done.

A BC PS3 with smoothing settings will help. To be honest Resident Evil 4 looks very rough round the edges on PS2. I'll have a test with my setup and see how it goes.

@@Kaiser187 I use an LG B7 OLED as my TV. With the Framemeister and PS2, Resident Evil 4 looks pretty rough but then again I'm not surprised given it's in 480i. When running via the BC PS3 the smoothing makes a small difference but not a massive one.

Install a CFW if the console allows it, Then you don't need to use HEN. HEN is only for Consoles that cannot have CFW installed.

On a STANDARD PS3 that hasn’t been hacked or modified, there IS a region lock on PS1 and PS2 games which I can 100% confirm! I had a US CECHA01 PS3 and it wouldn’t play any of my European PAL PS1 or PS2 games.

@@thecoolguy549 I didn't say that it acts *exactly* like backwards compatible console. I am saying that COBRA enables booting from optical media. This doesn't mean that game will run perfectly or will run at all. All PS3 have software emulation built in, if you didn't know.

You will need to install a CFW (custom firmware) and then you can run PS2 games from any region.

@@loyalfan2211 it's true. I have a North American PS3 fat 160 gig model but upgraded to 500 gig. I can play Transformers Tatakai which is a region 2 Japanese game. I also tested PAL PS1 games like Earthworm Jim 2 and Crash Team Racing and they ran fine.

@@DaveDoc1984 that's true but I wouldn't think it's that bad the emulation I have over 93 PS2 games installed on one of my PS3 slims and almost all of them perform just like if it were on a PS2 very few have severe issues or don't run at all I'm in Australia and my only option is the pal PS3 60gb models which is mostly emulation any way.

I would buy a PS2 and a Brook Wireless Adapter for PS2/1 which allows you to use a Dual Shock 3 or 4 with the PS2/1. BC PS3's are unreliable.

Yes my BC PS3 is also jailbroken too.

The jailbreak is agnostic of whether physical ps2 hardware is present in the console or not . Be sure to disable PS2 Emulation in rebug toolbox to use the real hardware. Cobra just uses the official Sony PS2 emulator that they released on PSN a few years back (ps2_netemu) for emulation instead of the two dev_flash files, ps2_emu.self for physical hardware in the CECH-A/B and ps2_gxemu for CECH-C/E with mapped physical hardware emulator. Having the privilege of using all 3 methods I can contest that the best method is genuine hardware in the CECH-A/B01, Followed by the pst_netemu and then last would be the CECH-C/E01. Unfortunately, the CECH-C/E01 just had the worst emulation of them all, from graphic bugs, game breaking glitches, freezes, abnormal VU behavior and games running as slow as 15% of their realtime speed. The ps2 architecture is fundamentally different to the CELL/BE and the mapping that was programmed into ps2_gxemu was simply to behave like an EE/IOP, not be mapped, instruction set for instruction se, clock for clock. I have kept my CECHA01 alive for 12 years now with the thermal management tool in D-REX and replacing my RSX and capacitors with proper Texas instrument ones. I recommend you try to play around with keeping your temps to get a temp as consistent as possible, rather than as cold as possible. Enjoy your machines.

How hard is reflowing?

@@Roninkinx it's not hard. Just time consuming. There are plenty of videos out there showing how to reflow something. Though it's never a guaranteed fix. I got lucky with mine and it lasted, but sometimes it's 2 days before it's bust or 2 years. Still better than nothing though.

Yep most of the time it is due to the NEC/TOKIN Caps which I doubted for quite a long time. However... it doesn't change the fact that the original PS3 Models are not particularly reliable especially 15 years after they were originally released which by December of this year, the PS3 turns 15 Years Old.. wow....

@@DaveDoc1984 Actually most of the time it is not because of NecTokins. After the rumor spread, everybody started replacing them , but in the process RSX usually also got heated and revived. It led to a lot of false positives. After new method of checking error codes was discovered, it was revealed that around 80 to 90% of cases were still related to RSX. And now it is possible to repalce the old RSX with the new ones (check the vid on my channel). Ofc, in the end, replacing NecTokins is also not entirely wrong. They seem to be the second most common vulnerability after RSX. They just don't fail as soon as RSX, but they might fail sometime later down the road...

So nothing in terms of hardware mods. I would love it if in someway we could water cool these things without it looking ridiculous but so far I haven't found a viable solution. The only things I can suggest are the usual plus 1 VERY risky thing you can do. Change the Thermal Compound between the Heat Sink and the IHS of the Cell and RSX Chips. However... to really make a difference you would need to de-lid the Cell and RSX and put new Thermal "Adhesive" (not compound) under the lid on top of the Die and RAM chips.

No. Only if they originally ran at that frame rate on the PS2 and PS1. If the PS2 Games ran at 60FPS then the BC PS3 will mostly run it at 60FPS but the Slim PS3 will struggle to run it at the same framerate.

Flawlessly on a Non BC PS3 (Either Full Hardware or Partial)? Not a chance. You will have games that exhibit slowdown and in some cases graphical glitches because its being fully emulated in software by the Slim / Super Slim PS3. If you are more concerned with accuracy and performance, I would have to say use an Original PS2.

If a full backwards compatible PS3 it will use the Emotion Engine CPU :)

Thats funny because on 4.84.2 REBUG CEX with the latest Multiman(4.82) it actually runs with no visual glitches but at like 80% speed and im trying to get it to run full speed.

Yes I have 2 that still work. 1 Which I don't think has had as much use as you might expect, another one which the fan is noisy (more so since I increased the fan speed) and has had a lot of use.

Because the PS3 uses software emulation to play PS1 games is most likely why it works. Some PS2s have compatibility issues with some PS1 games which I have documented at least 1 game that has issues... Formula 1 98.

Unfortunately its because HDTVs don't have very good upscale circuitry in them or else we wouldn't need external scalers / video processors. Their priority was getting HD to look at it's best rather than legacy stuff like some of us still like to use.

@@DaveDoc1984 Pretty sure they do it on purpose just so they can create a secondary market for these things and the prices are absolutely ridiculous. It's the same with audio, my old cheapo 15 euro speakers have a headphone amp in them but now suddenly they can't afford to put one in a piece of equipment that costs 50 times more while a standalone amp of the same quality would cost me at least 100 euros. I kept my PS2 nice and pristine in it's box all these years and at the end of the day someone with a good PC has a better experience with these games than i do, so disappointing. Also i think Sony TVs just have terrible upscalers, at least mine seems to. The game looks better in a Samsung i have in the house even though it was cheaper.
