Sometimes I think everyone went down with the Titanic, then I realise a lot of people survived..... I get the same feeling after watching the podcast... So many people have survived drink, drugs, ect and go on to help others.

This has been one of the best podcasts I have seen on You Tube . One day at a time I have been sober over 30 years . The honesty and commitment to living sober is not easy but you have demonstrated in such a powerful way how it can be done. I intend on listening to the rest of your podcasts and look forward to future podcasts. Thank you so much .

Very good point made regarding trauma. Its followed by addiction as a way to reduce the pain of what has happened in life. Self medicating can sometimes keep people alive, until rock bottom is reached and recovery is only then possible. Great podcast as always lads!

I’m coming to terms with the fact I’m an addict. The only good part about getting pissed is the getting pissed, the camaraderie with your mates. Being bolloxed is grim, having no money is grim, Feeling shit for days is shit, the depression is shit. Yet I keep going back

Late comer to your podcasts simply blown away by both of your stories James and Timmy and your bravery in sharing them so honestly which will definitely help others. This was a fantastic podcast and Tadhg spoke so honestly about his issues, there was a great raport between the three of ye a super guest and two natural and empathetic interviewers, also saw Tadhgs show In One Eye and out the Other myself, and it was brilliant. Keep the podcasts coming I am in awe of you both and thank you for putting together the TwoNorries you are both doing a brilliant job, I look forward to catching up on the rest of your podcasts :)

He is right what he said about functioning alcoholics sometimes finding it more difficult. in my case I was seemingly still doing well in many aspects of my life and alcohol gradually destroyed my life

Woah, my experience was the polar opposite of what you guys articulated. Tough love never worked on me, I was far, far too skilled at manipulation, once someone stopped enabling me, I’d just bite the bullet & tough it out for a bit if I had to while finding someone else who would. Likewise, hitting rock bottom did absolutely nothing for me. It made me stop for a while, not change. It was kindness, love, empathy, compassion, and a willingness to believe in me despite me giving 0 reason that changed me & saved me. I saw myself dying in my own mind as well, I just didn’t care, I had zero desire to live. Yet I was also constantly reaching for & trying to find love, specifically the compassionate kind. The moment I saw that it’s real, it does exist, and I can have it, life started to become worth living. Sadly, things didn’t work out with the person who saved my life, because I didn’t learn to love myself, I was just letting them love me for both of us, but losing them was the last piece of the puzzle. It wasn’t a rock bottom, it didn’t destroy my life. I did relapse for 5 months, but it wasn’t the same, I’d use 2 days, then take 3 off & just stay buzzed & stoned for those 3 & I managed to avoid becoming physically addicted again. I understood at that point that I was self-medicating, so I started treating it that way, and using in a very structured way. I actually thought I had cracked the code, but after 5 months I was dropping more than $360 a week to use 3 days a week, and I started missing bills, saw it all coming, and stopped again, started getting the healthcare I needed, dealt with my emotional pain, began to learn to love myself. I’m not over it, I’m not well, but I’m clean, I’m growing & changing, life is improving, and the more it does the less I feel that pull, even when times are hard. All tough love ever did for me was embolden me. I do not believe that tough love is love, it isn’t, it’s just emotional manipulation & nothing more. We can argue about whether or not it’s justified when it’s for a good cause, I don’t think so at all, but I can see why some people do. If circumstances force me to change, the changes will not stick for me, they’re just a survival mechanism. Change only works for me when I choose it because it’s just what I want for myself. So it took a situation that made me want to change for it to happen.

I hope you're ok now. I suppose different things work for different people. The reasons people get hooked on whatever their poison are many and varied too. Sometimes you just get tired of being the clown in the outfit. The people who can seem to handel things telling you all about what you did last night. I think it's important to find a replacement to fill all the time spent drinking/smoking whatever. No one answer fits all. Again. Hope you are well. Don't beat yourself up if you have a slip. Just get back up and try again. Life's no picnic, drunk or sober but its less of a head wrecker if you don't have to worry about what you did last night.

Good point about being accepted “into the gang” by drinking. It can make you feel like you belong , or even cool. And not just when you’re young.

Hi there, I’ve just tuned in and listened to this one, came across it accidentally as was looking up the subject of alcoholism. Ye have handled such a big subject there. it’s a real shit what it does to some people. and for others it’s ok. I’m just upset cause it caused such huge damage for me. and It’s very good, so I’d like to listen to some more. Sorry for question, wondering are you guys Limerick or cork? I’m not great at accents. More importantly, what vehicle are your podcasts on, are they all held here on KZfaq, or are there more elsewhere ? thanks again.
