I remember when my dad got deployed to Afghanistan (he isn't in the Army though, he's in the Air Force as a doctor) and I was only six. I started going to art therapy (which is like regular therapy but you do art while talking) because I was having such a hard time. It was the first time I had ever seen my parents cry, and that's a very jarring thing for a little kid. And my dad had gotten in a car accident earlier that year, and hurt his wrist and hip, and even though they had healed fairly well it still added another level of worry. My sister wasn't even one, and my dad was gone for about a year, and I remember hearing my mom say to her friends that she was worried my sister wouldn't recognize my dad when/if he got back. Thankfully, he came home after 13 months, and she did remember him, and he hasn't had to deploy since then. But it was a very tough time for my family, I had three little sisters at the time (now I have five) and even though we had lots of friends on our street that helped take care of me and my sisters, and provide emotional support, it was very hard. I find it incredibly insensitive that people treat this kind of thing like a joke, knowing that it's torn thousands of families apart. I was lucky enough to get my dad back, but I know that so many others were not as fortunate, and my heart goes out to them. I just can't believe people treat this as a 'haha funny' kind of thing.
