Location: Francis Dr Toms River
Call Description: Pre arrival RV Fire
Units In Video: 2801 5311 3041 2700 2810
Date Filmed: September 26 2022
Additional Info: Initially Stations 28,29&30 were dispatched to OCC for an odor investigation. I went to Station 28 to film them responding but they were unable to get a crew on the road for the first call. As I was on my way home on Fischer Blvd I saw a large column of smoke and immediately 9-1-1. I made sure dispatch had all their information before the video began.

I had a 1985 Executive motor home. Just got back to the park from filling the 80lb propane tank. Put the kettle on the stove and sat down. Heard what I thought was the water boiling, turned around to see a 2ft flame. Hit it with the extinguisher, ran out side and closed the value. Stood at the doorway and emptied the extinguisher on it. I took the motorhome to a place to get estimates for repairs that was about 60 miles away. Was called by the fire marchal to come in and talk about it. They had my motorhome out in the middle of a field venting the propane off. Apparently the gas station overfilled the tank. That 2ft flame could have been 8ft if I did not turn off the valve as it would only have been second before the liquid propane came out. He had never heard of a motorhome or trailer surviving a tank being filled that full. The gas station had to pay for the repairs and was fined $10,000.

Years ago when I was in my late-teens, I worked at a gas station washing cars, and one of my jobs was filling up customers propane tanks. I absolutely hated that part of it, because I had no idea how to fill them and was given fuck-all in training or instruction. You had to open the top valve with a screw driver and then try and use your third hand to operate the hose and pump.....fuck that. Propane is some dangerous shit. Great to BBQ with though, lol.

Fuel fed fires are some of the hardest because gasoline and water don't mix, hence the fire "floating" on top of the foam..

Got to love when you keep spreading the burning gas around on the ground and it sneaks back and is burning under your line and behind your back....I have the utmost respect for all 1st responders and the sacrifices they make and the protections the provide us. I do hope that they take a little refresher on foam operations. Hopefully they can watch this great video and see what could have done different, if anything. Every job is a learning opportunity. Foam only works when applied properly. That is accomplished by using the correct foam, the correct proportioning device and nozzle and applying it to the burning fuel correctly. Continuing to walk through the finished foam, disturbing it by directing a hose stream into it repeatedly, and dragging the hose line through it does nothing but endanger the members, prolongs the operation and wastes foam concentrate.

What about bringing out the Dry chem extinguishers or the CO2 extinguisher for the fuel on the ground?? What about a lot better nozzle technique and water conservation??. I don’t know if they were on that hydrant initially but if they were just going off the tank that’s a quick way to run out of water to keep the nozzle constantly open like that. Too many resources…Shoulda been a single engine company handle for a vehicle fire and that’s it. Obviously they get one of these year at best. Keep on training my bros….

@@ritirons2726 Expansion foaming agent forms large interconnected bubbles, which creates a physical, visible barrier between the volatile combustible vapours and the atmospheric air, which removes one part of the fire tetrahedron, (the oxygen part) and is primarily used on Class B fires, a wetting agent is used primarily on Class A and non water soluble Class B fires, the wetting agent will mix with hydrocarbon fuels and ‘lock up’ the fuel. A wetting agent will dilute the fuel in increase its flashpoint, which reduces the fuels ability to vaporize at ambient temps or when heated. So in this case a foaming agent would’ve been a better idea.
@ritirons2726
@ritirons2726 Жыл бұрын
@@Jimmythefish577 I was hoping that is what he meant. It could have been a number of factors, but whatever they decided to use at this incident wasn’t quite the best choice. It could have been the wrong concentrate, improper proportioning, wrong applicator, or a combination of those. But if that is 3%-6% concentrate, the finished foam visible in the video would appear and perform much differently. My first thought was it almost appears to be CAF or a typical Class A. That would produce a “white water” or milk appearance. Many departments opt to use Class A for vehicle fires. Regardless, the flare ups were a result of continued disruption of whatever foam blanket they were attempting to lay down or the improper foam concentrate.
