My husband (30 year Marine vet) co-signed student loans when he was married to his first wife for 25 years. She was to get a nursing degree (basically 2 year associates where we live) because their 5 kids where almost grown & her husband (now mine, sounds weird, I know) was going to be able step down so that he wouldn't be deployed so much. He was over ordnance (loading bombs on the planes) & never got to see his kids. She would borrow $2000, $5000,, $1000, blew through the money & never even got a two year degree. She got partial disability & found another meal ticket so she doesn't pay the loans & they can't garnish disability. Anyway, he has been paying these loans for 12 years now & they are still more than they were when she took out the loans. The interest rates are obscene & they change them often (increase of course)! One company is so corrupt that they deny that we've been paying & take my husband to court (she doesn't go), garnish his wages, so we were paying a monthly $500 on top of the $1000 they garnished. There are two other companies that we pay also. No one will consolidate them (they're making bank off of us so why would they). We have to get lawyers to get them to acknowledge the payments we made (but they said we didn't) & we have the proof we paid! We have the bank statemens & pay stubs & they won't adjust about two years of payments & all the interest & fees that they tacked on. We need a better lawyer but can't afford it. This is an example of a loan (which is actually about 6 loans combined) that started as $15,000. We now pay them $400 a month but they still won't credit several years worth of payments that we can prove. We were paying them $1500 a month (not exaggerating in the slightest) until a lawyer was able to talk them down & remove the garnish. It went up to $50,000 at one point & we've paid down to$26,000 but they started "not recognizing" payments again for a few months until I went after them again. Still not recognizing the payments (that come out of the bank) & tacked on a bunch of interest & fees (won't remove them) so we were back up to $28,000 over a few months. They are corrupt AF! My dad passed away & I got some money from him. I want to pay them off in full. I still need to save a few thousand more to pay one lump sum but I have requested a payoff balance & we get a ignored or they say it's only good for a day so if it doesn't clear in that day (even payingvonline) then they will continue to add their weekly interest. I don't trust them to take a large amount of money so we can at least knock the amount down to save interest. Common sense, right? Not these guys! They don't want to be paid off! They do everything they can to keep that monthly check coming in! Seriously, it's ridiculous! I have a degree in Biochemistry. Took out $20,000. Interest was about 2.5%. Graduated in 95. Took 2 jobs & extra side jobs. Lived extremely frugal & had my loans paid off in less than two years. Thought I could do the same with this. We live horribly yet pay student loan companies about $2000 a month. My husband is 60! I don't see us retiring...ever. We have paid that original loan amount back to the company at least 4 times now. That's just one company. Granted they are the worst & not everyone's situation is this bad but they are making bank. We can't file bankruptcy. Student loans aren't eligible. Sorry for the book but believe me when I tell you the tax payers aren't paying anything for any forgiveness. My husband should get some forgiveness given how long we've paid & the amount of time he's served but he's only the co-signer! So she has to apply for itv& she's a complete c#nt & thinks it's funny. Sadly, we could've helped their kids get through college but she gets more joy watching her ex suffer. I sincerely hope it's not this bad for everyone but it is extremely predatory & they don't want to be paid back. The government run student loan (Nelnet) has been the only decent one & seems to follow regular banking rules.
