Per-Olof Odman served in the Swedish army 1965-1966. He enjoyed military life, excelled at it, and was attracted to the world of war. In 1967, he obtained a visa to travel to the United States. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He arrived in Da Nang, South Vietnam, on Christmas Eve 1967. He survived the siege of Khe Sanh the following month.
