Very helpful again, thank you. I'm a 70 year old student pilot based at Deanland in East Sussex, i had lessons at Biggin in the eighties but have never had the resources to get the full ticket. It is harder than i expected regarding confidence and knowledge, these films help immensely.

Thank you Jon for posting another brilliant video, and especially on the subject of confidence, I can relate to this story too, and the elation of getting back in the air with the feeling of achievement and a confidence boost post flight. I like to video my own flights and enjoy the whole experience once again. Already looking forward to your next video.

Good to see you back in the air again Jon. My biggest confidence knock was probably early after my PPL getting myself lost over Regional New South Wales. I managed to get myself back to home base in the end, but took me a long while to get over that. Another really interesting video, thanks mate!

Just to that I came across your channel, I watch one video and I am now glued :) Love it! Your videos are fresh and exciting. It been a while since I've flown and I must say watching your channel has brought back memories and has got me buzzing to get back into flying. I like how you show all the good bit and also not so good bits which is how we learn and I have to agree with Xiderpunk statement "The sign of a good aviator is when you actively learn from your mistakes." Once again great video and thank you for sharing.

Just discovered your excellent channel and felt I would comment on this. Knocks to confidence when doing something exacting like flying is common place and also healthy. The biggest problem is in fact the opposite, when your confidence naturally leads to complacency. You never stop learning at this game and from time to time things will throw a curve ball at you, the sign of a good aviator is when you actively learn from it.

Nice, relaxing trip, well done ! - I'm new after renewing after 9 years out of the seat. My confidence is still rebuilding again, but the feeling when you get back on the ground is so satisfying :)

Great video. You've hit the nail on the head. Confidence is the key. I've been flying out of fairoaks for a couple of years now and am never as confident as I would like to be. Cost and time means I can never fly frequently enough to really get there!

I definitely took a knock of confidence at the start of the year when I turned final for the wrong runway at Sleap! I myself went on a confidence building mission over summer visiting different airfields and challenging myself. Great video!

Thanks for a great video. I am an American who first started flying in 1966 in West Texas. We had some beautiful, smog free days back then. I now live in the Houston, Texas area and I can not make that claim for the greater Houston area. I subscribe to several British aviation channels. Your enunciation is fantastic and clear. This probably has to do with your reporter background. On several other channels, (Andy Torkington,Sebb Stratta) I have no problem understanding what they are saying. I really like Plane Old Ben, but I have a hard time understanding what he is saying. No problem,I watch the channel anyway. Just a note, I have a hard time understanding what the people from Boston are saying as well. Keep the videos coming. I really enjoy them.

Not a pilot out there who hasn't made a mistake and wondered, is this for me. Good to see you getting back into it, and on such a beautiful day. Flew out of Biggin myself in the 80s and 90s. Some great memories watching your videos, but PPRs ?, not in my day, jump in, say hello and off you go. That said, the only jets using the place were the odd visitors, Bernie E and his Whisper Jet and Quantel in their Cessna Jet.

Another enjoyable video, thank you! Particularly liked your point about learning at airfields with full ATC - that's why I learned at East Midlands Airport. Was very strange when did my first landaway at an A/G airport (Retford/Gamston)... didn't have a clue what I needed to do! Still, got there in the end and have had my licence a couple of months now. All I need to do is find somewhere local to me (near Leicester) with a PA28 share I can buy in to :) Keep up the good work with the videos and I'll keep listening out for the callsign :) Nick

Hi Jon, glad to see you getting back in the air and getting your confidence back. You certainly don't see to be at all rusty! It's interesting to see Biggin's procedures, I've never visited an airfield that requires you to quote a PPR number before. To be honest, I've not been into a controlled airfield since my QXC! Really appreciate the effort you put into producing these videos. It's great to see content from another pilot in SE England.

Excellent video & very useful to see the Biggin procedures. I've done very little flying in to airfields with full ATC. Quite an intimidating prospect. Nothing I haven't been trained for - just something I don't practice. I guess there is the clue...

Amazing video. I'm currently doing my PPL. I've logged around 35 hours, passed 4/9 exams. My last flight/lesson was July where i finished of the PFL. I sat and unfortunately failed the Aircraft General Knowledge & Principles of Flight exam in October, i did rush into sitting those exams which showed in the result but i have to say it has really, really knocked my confidence now. I'm honestly scared to resit those exams now incase i fail them again. On the same hand i am desperate to get my hands on my license. Anyway great video, Look forward to more like it. Cheers Liam

You are right about thinking ahead in flying. If I can I set up all 4 com and 2 nav frequencies on the ground (main and standby) before I even take off. By the way do you have an IMC rating or IR ratings or plan to do those ?

Thanks for the great videos. Not a judgment at all, but wanted to get a broader view on something I noticed in this video. After landing and coasting down the runway I noticed immediately once you were securely grounded that you fully retracted the flaps. I fly a 152 so for the sake of visibility while taxiing I like to retract flaps asap.This was the case until I heard a tale of a student who retracted flaps after landing only for a gust of wind to temporarily make them airborne. the plane being on the verge of stalling and the lack of height from which to recover, they had a very hard encounter with the ground causing the wings to buckle and other damage as a result. After hearing of this I made it a habit of clearing the runway and coming to a full stop before completing the post landing checks including retracting flaps.

Love the videos as always - on your initial call to Biggin, does the basic service on the ground imply you just make your own way to the holding point keeping your own lookout?

Hi Jon I've just found and subscribed to your excellent and informative channel. Question please, I know when flying over say a military airfield they have publicised MATZ boundrys regarding how high you must go to clear their zone, but if your perhaps flying along the south coast and wish to overfly somewhere like Shoreham. Where is the information to tell you haw high you must fly to clear their ATZ. Regards Keith

How come you always ask for a basic service and not a traffic service if it's available? Is that just preference or do you trust your eyes a lot ha? Another great video!

Good instructive video as always Jon. One question for you. Don’t aerodromes with instrument procedure usually have a TMA above? Are there cases where there is no TMA and you cannot fly above the ATZ?

Not flown from biggin hill before but PPR to depart? For a local flight when you're based there?? Small airport syndrome. Cranfield is similar but even they don't require nonsense like that.
