So just to make sure I have this straight, if I get a nail out side of the belt and I repair that hole I have voided the warranty, but the warranty doesn’t cover nails in my tire so I have two choices, repair the nail hole voiding the warranty OR throw that tire away and buy Not one but FOUR new tires so the tread depth is the same on all four tires so as to not ruin the running gear on an all wheel drive car, that actually sounds like a great sales model!

for those who are criticizing this man for the first nail shown and the string patch. pay attention.. he did not say it was unable to be repaired. it is just not wise to repair it if you want to keep warranty on your tires. as he said more than once. if the injury of the tire is outside the belt package it does not fall under warranty
@Jokerseven77
@Jokerseven77 8 жыл бұрын
+brett pingel This is true, however the belt package of tires doesn't always end at the rib that hits the shoulder block. What you can do is removing the offending item and then use your awl/ probe to check and see if you can feel the belt package on each side of the hole. If you can, then 9 times out of ten your tire will be in a repairable area. One thing to note though is that if the placement of the patch on the inside of the tire is too close to the inner sidewall it will be unwise to try and repair it even if you're still within the belt package because of how much the tire will flex while on the road, potentially causing the patch to work itself loose.
@dwayneevans683
@dwayneevans683 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jokerseven77 Yes sir you are correct , u have to watch out for the flex point when your getting close to the edge of the tire . once the repair is done on the flat contact surface of the tire it should work, but going to close to the edge/side wall creates a big problem because as the tire rolls, it continuously flex's causing the seal/patch to fail! This is the reason why its good practice to come off about an inch from the edge on both side to make a safe repair!

Oh geez, when's the last time you saw a catastrophic failure from a nail going into a tire? Well in my mind, a plug is no different than a nail except for the fact that air can no longer escape, and a plug is damn near impossible to pull out once it's inserted , this sounds a lot like scare tactics! I guess it justifies paying 4X more money to fix a minor problem

old trucker actually all the time. People don’t pay attention to their tires or wait too long for a repair. Actually being in the industry daily you see it every single day. When people drive on low tires it creates a heat ring which compromises the integrity of the tire. These style of repairs are safer than a gummy plug or rope plug on passenger cars and trucks. Plus most tire shops such as discount tire repair tires for free.

This video is labeled as a Professional Tire Repair and is what is supposed to be done. The reason the criteria is held to tire manufacturer specific warranty criteria is a shop will be held liable if a repair end up in a tire failure or leak but worse an accident or loss of life. No shop wants that ever to happen and must protect his customer's safety. He isn't saying this to sell tires but is actually looking out for his customer's safety and how a tire repair is supposed to be done!

@bremCZ
@bremCZ 6 жыл бұрын
Jeffro115 the issue with string repairs wasnt leaking it was that the tire was most often repaired without internal inspection meaning if the tire had any internal sidewall damage from being underinflated it wasn't at all noticed. This resulted in the direct deaths of some people due to a complete tire failure at high speed after the string repair was applied. This is why in many places the string repair is actually illegal.

I have looked at a number of videos on how to do a puncture repair and I think this is one of the best. The only thing that surprised me what that you did not vaccum out the tyre debris before applying the cement and patch. By leaving it in place you risk small particles moving onto to the repair area which could result in poor adhesion.

Thanks for your comments. To speak to your question, IMFDB, the weight in question is less than 1/4 oz. If you can mount the tire to the same position it should not change the balance. It's a business call as to yes or no- many facilities use tire rebalancing as a profit service.

The cost associated with repairing a passenger car tire correctly will vary based on a number of factors, but it is not unusual for this service to fall in the $20-$30 range. It is important to keep in mind that this service will not only include demounting, inspecting and repairing the tire, it would also include a rebalancing of the tire once it has been remounted to the rim. Some vehicles require TPMS service which would increase the cost of repair.

That pricing would make sense if it's an expensive large low profile $100 plus tyre, but there's no point spending that money to repair a more standard tyre size where an extra $5/$10 would buy you a brand new tyre??

Good Instruction. Except It'd be helpful to know as a last step whether I should balance the tire after mounting.it. Do you think it's a good procedure to leave a witness mark on the tire and line that mark up after mounting it as a shortcut to balancing it? I'm thinking we shouldn't do that because the patch's weight might throw the balance off.

Curious, with this type of repair are you supposed to drive on it right away? Or is it best to let it sit and dry for a while? I know the kits are fast drying, but I'm assuming there is a curing time as well. I've always assumed best to take it easy on the way home after a repair and just park it until the next day. IDK, kind of a sciency question I suppose. haha
@mightyautoparts
@mightyautoparts 7 жыл бұрын
Very good question @Kraken. Following the process outlined in the video, cement is stippled into the buffed surface of the tire and allowed to dry prior to applying the rubber repair unit. After the repair unit is applied, a chemical reaction occurs known as vulcanization. Once the repair has been completed, the curing process may take up to 72 hours. However, the adhesion strength of the repair unit immediately after the repair, is strong enough for the tire to be put back in service, and driven under normal conditions.

have a patch and plug near the shoulder of a Y rated tire, is it still safe for top speed runs? Never leaked for a year and did not deform at turns. If it fails, will it be catastrophic or gradual?
@mightyautoparts
@mightyautoparts 9 жыл бұрын
lordoftheriffs79 Repairs made near the shoulder of any tire must still be contained within the belt package, which is generally limited to the center portion of the tire. Proper repairs made to a speed rated tire may impact the rating of the tire. In this case, the industry recommendation would be to contact the specific tire manufacturer to determine THEIR policy.
@AugustusTitus
@AugustusTitus 8 жыл бұрын
+lordoftheriffs79: Speed-rated tires are a manufacturer specific thing. Last guidance I saw in Police Fleet Manager magazine indicated that a V-rated tire, properly plugged and patched, was only rated to 85 MPH afterwards. At that time, there weren't many manufacturers in the police tires game.

@mightyautoparts
@mightyautoparts 8 жыл бұрын
+Park Boulevard Heat should never be applied to the repair area when performing a tire repair. A proper and permanent repair consists of a chemical reaction that bonds the natural rubber of the inner liner to the rubber patch. This is known as vulcanization, a chemical process that converts natural rubber or related polymers into a more durable material via the addition of a sulfur accelerator. Additional heat, like fire, changes the molecular structure of the rubber surface and compromises its ability to properly seal the injury.

@nomad_1997 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure sidewall repairs are not safe and you should always replace the tire if the sidewall is punctured or significantly damaged. I'm no expert, I'm guessing the reason is that they're too thin, a repair will probably not have the structural integrity that a stock tire would, and the risk of a blowout is very high in that case. It's even more dangerous if the tire in question is one of the front tires, mid-driving the vehicle could immediately change lanes and cause a serious accident.

Well Maybe Ok but You just pulled all the adhesive from the center hole, So add a little adhesive to the patch so when you pull you have adhesive on the plug. Then do the repair per video.

Where I work, we use bead seal to seal the patch. Is that correct?
@mightyautoparts
@mightyautoparts 9 жыл бұрын
Bead sealer should not be used to seal a tire patch, the product is a natural rubber compound that is designed to help with the sealing of a tire to the rim when the mating surface is pitted or rusted (a common condition in cold weather regions). Bead sealer conforms easily to uneven surfaces, filling in void areas, similar to a gasket. Bead sealer has poor air retention characteristics on its own and is not permanent. It can be easily removed from the sealing surface once the tire has been demounted. Liner sealer, on the other hand, is a synthetic rubber compound that has very good air retention characteristics. After installing the repair patch, liner sealer is used to replace the material that had been removed during the buffing process. Once dry, it functions the same as the inner liner of a tire, since during a tire repair, the layer of inner liner (synthetic rubber) is buffed away to prepare the tire surface.

Yes that would be fine. This video is extreme overkill and these methods are designed for maximum profit to the tire companies. I’ve fixed many nail holes with a string plug and never had a problem as long as they sealed.

Make sure you fix that INJURY! Far too much trouble - just use a DIY plug. Leave the tire on the rim.

Roger Tycholiz Yeah... don't inspect the inside and only find out about the internal sidewall damage when it kills someone, good idea.

Extremely rare for tires to blow out these days. They almost always have catastrophic damage or be have to be completely worn out for them to be actually dangerous.

Exactly! I've been plugging tires on my Semi trucks for 30 years! I've never ever ever had an issue. One time I managed to pick up socket wrench extension in one of my drive tires, I put 4 plugs just in that one hole, aired it up to 100 PSI (just to cripple the rig home), I ran that tire for 1.5 years!without an issue 👍

can I use a drill bit to ream the hole out
@mightyautoparts
@mightyautoparts 9 жыл бұрын
A typical drill bit is not acceptable when preparing an injury channel. A typical drill bit would not cut a clean channel and could generate enough heat to permanently damage the tire. The carbide cutter is specially designed to cut a clean, smooth channel which will allow the repair stem to seal the hole, preventing dirt and moisture from entering the belt package. Using the carbide cutter also minimizes the amount of heat being generated, significantly reducing the chances of scorching the rubber and damaging the tire.

Heres the expert tip! NEVER use a greasy tire marker to identify injury location inside,(if your working on it you should see it anyway...)this will induce a contaminent you will have a hard time removing even with a good solvent wich will only spread it around leading to eventual separation of the substrate.(on the seconth video, the copper brush clearly spread some of that grease marker...) Otherwise good repair!
