This week I'm installing a 1-ton steering upgrade from JCR Offroad on Project Overlander. I made some really stupid mistakes, so watch and learn so you don't do the same thing I did. Thanks for watching!

Ruffstuff makes a tapered insert kit so you don't have to buy the reamer. You drill the knuckles and pitman arm out to one size (i think it was 7/8" for my application) then you insert the tapered insert into the hole and weld it in place. Way cheaper than buying a reamer and probably easier too.

FYI - The primary issue I observed in your video concerning the reamer use (other than the excessive amount of material being reamed due to not pre-drilling), was the speed with which you were using it, keep your speed at a lower RPM and you'll be less likely to burn up your reamer.

You should be able to have the reamer re-ground at a fraction of the cost for a new one. Take it to a machine shop that has a grinding room or use an online sharpening house... great video! I'm looking forward to seeing more of them!

Have you had any issues with it since the install? And did you find any aftermarket differential covers that will work with it? I recently installed Cavfab and am not happy with it. I didn't realize how much noise that the heims would make.

Dude, I wish you were my neighbor! My girlfriend and I just purchased our first Jeep XJ and would love to have someone with your knowledge nearby. It's an '01 sport and we love it! We sold my gf's 4WD escape (because it sucked) once we moved out here to Nevada. She wanted to get something that we could both work on together. Plenty of awesome trails out here and we were tired of the constant wheel slip and spin, being restricted with the crappy, fake unreliable 4wd system her car came with. My Ford 4x4 super crew does just fine but some areas and trails we go to, it is a bit bulky and cumbersome at times, so we decided we wanted to get a smaller sized iconic American 4x4 suv... the XJ!!!! Thank you and the rest of the BleepinJeep crew for all the time and knowledge you guy's have invested in your videos over the last few years. I have always watched your channel and dreamt one day we would own a jeep, well the time is now and this beer I'm about to open is for you guys, CHEERS!!!! -Johnny

That's why I decided to buy a kit that didn't require drilling out the knuckle. It's important for the ball joint to seat nice and tight without spacers.

Is there any Bump Steer? It looks like the track bar and drag link are not parallel after the new links are put in. I'm looking into this set up or Heim joint 1-tons for my 98 ZJ daily driver so I'm looking into all the options and don't want a surprise that's going to cause order extra parts to set it right.

Don’t those rod ends have the same weakness as the others? They come off the end then get thin then go round and the thin part looks as thin as the old ones. What good is a bar that doesn’t break or bend when the ends snap at that thin point?

@jasonbodi503
@jasonbodi503 2 жыл бұрын
Underneath is the factory design so it's more or less just plug and play with these upgrades. If you swap to over the knuckle you usually have to cut stabilizer brackets and sway brackets off to clear the tie rods and I think there's more to it than that

UM, you didnt screw up the pass side knuckle, you take the rubber boot off and only use the UHMW spacer. if you use both, you don't have enough taper engaged to be safe

To do Over The Knuckle steering properly, you also have to raise your axle trackbar mount to keep everything in check. Otherwise you start getting bump steer from non-parallel links.

+Alan Ackaway my brother actually had this happen while driving my dad's XJ. Luckily for him, he was off-road and going fairly slow. The tie rod came apart and the front tires did the splits. We got the jeep professionally aligned after installing a similar kit. Not sure what they did, but it wasn't good. We ended up spot welding the locknuts to the tie rod after getting aligned...again.

Why try and retain the abs on a Cherokee? The breaking is super weak to start with and at minimum based in the weight your gonna run gonna need and upgrade kit plus 96 booster and master upgrade. Even then with the kind of weight you’ll be running you’re never gonna be able to use the abs? Just seems like a waste of time and as you’ll be pulling the rear d35 odds are the axle replacing it might not be compatible anyways. Seems like a big waste of time to me for something you haven’t completely thought through to release you want be using it long term. You’re also over adjusted for toe on the tie rod.. 1/8” difference is for 33-36” tires..

bad lighting. would like to see some tests on the difference between this setup and a ZJ tie rod upgrade. my guess is there is not much of a difference. The biggest upgrade with this setup to me is the ease of tie rod end replacement, no need to buy a whole new drag link like with the stock setup

should have used terraflex steering kit i wont mall rate the kit you used if you rigs a trailer queen ypu can get away with it but i will say they dont make a grate product becuse you have horrible angles on you track bar and drag link i have a 8 lift on 39s on mine and flat track bar and drag link drives like its stock took 3 trys to get where im at and all i can say is this rig will drive like shit on the freeway
@tylerbleepinjeep606
@tylerbleepinjeep606 8 жыл бұрын
The suspension is at full droop in this video, not at ride hight. The angles will be MUCH flatter when the weight of the vehicle is resting on the springs and not on jack stands. There also is no engine, tranny, etc. in the vehicle right now so it's way lighter than it will be once it's complete.

+Tyler Bleepinjeep i ran the rustys kit first then whent to the jrc kit when i had a 4.5 sort arm kit and the angles where bad and i lost alot of steering angle the kits made more problems then they solve its a bad product
@tomd1939
@tomd1939 8 жыл бұрын
you can also "Frankenstein" aftermarket parts together for a flatter angle on the track bar (which is what I intend to do). I know skyjacker makes a elbow bracket that mounts to the sway bar end link and the original steering stabilizer mount. you disregard the original track bar mount and the track bar goes into the steering stabilizer mount which raises it on the axle side (the kit has a provision with a new mount for a steering stabilizer if you still feel the need for one). attach that with a track bar drop bracket on the unibody side and an adjustable track bar to compensate for the new flatter angle, and BAM...smooth riding....for the most part...in theory....or just keep your receipts, HAHA!

The tie rod ends are garbage. Took my zj out 3 times on this kit and one ball joint was toast and the tie rod end the drag link ties into was bent. Just like most things, you get what you pay for... Pony up and buy the U-turn from oro. BTW I'm on a 6" lift and was using a 2" drop pitman arm. U-turn does not require a 2" drop. Recommends using the stock pitman and no reaming either..
