The biggest benefit of lat pulldowns for me is that when I do pull ups I get winded really quickly. I often feel dizzy or even sick when I pile pull ups on top of deadlifts or squats in the same workout but lat pulldowns help you get stronger lats without fatiguing your body as much. Definitely useful for beginners like me who have trouble finishing a 45 minute workout.

Probably both until you have enough strength to do weighted pull ups. 4 months ago I was 25lbs heavier and couldn’t do a single pull up, so I focused on lat pull downs and rows until I’d built the strength to do pull-ups. Now I’m able to do 3 sets of 5 pull ups. Once I’m able to do 10, I’ll start adding weight.

@@MikaelLewisify I recently quit my old job, on the last of Jan. I'm now on the same mend as you were, losing weight, using lat pull downs, and rows to get the strength necessary to perform non-single sets of pull ups. Best of luck getting back into fitness, and I'm grateful I have the resources to focus on health and overall life goals instead of work, for a while at least.

Doing a resistance workout on the pull up is also a great way to build up to pull ups as well as dips. I saw a video you made demonstrating a pull up utilizing only the resistance going down for several reps for a few sets to build up to either a pull up and even a dip. I've actually used this technique for dips a few years ago because I had let myself gain weight and had stopped working out for a little over a year. I really enjoy your videos! lots of great knowledge imparted to understand why form is important, which I have always strived for, and I grew up in an era where gym at school was mandatory and calisthenics was routinely done every day, along with a short jog. Thanks for posting the videos!🙂

Gold's Gym usually has a spot pad you can pull out under a pull up bar, and you can add or drop weight to the spot pad that you rest your knees on. I started out with that back in 2011 when I was getting back into working out after 6 or 7 years of complacency of no work outs. It really takes a lot of focus on strengthening the tendons and ligaments that hold everything together with light workouts and eating healthy and building oxygen levels in the blood for the muscles. Cardio is important, especially for people that are over weight and haven't worked out in years. Anyway, thanks for the videos. Body weight workouts are probably some of the most healthy workouts for your body!

After any bar work training, I end with a few sets of one arm lat pull down on an outdoor gym equipment which is moved by a long straight bar for two hands, interspersed with sets of one arm overhead press. This gives extra training time with a lower possibility of injury due to tiring of stabilizer muscles. It also helps with fixing asymmetries which occur in non-asymmetric training on the bar.

I completely ditched lat pulldowns when I started calisthenics a few years ago. Zero regrets. My best back development gains have come from pull ups, rows and deadlifts. For me personally, I would only throw in lat pull downs at the end of a workout to induce great metabolic stress in the back muscles, but again, I can still get a similar effect performing high reps on inverted/Australian rows (reaching failure). Pull ups are a superior exercise, although this video does a great job at showing when lat pull downs could be a valuable tool. Keep up the awesome content, Daniel.

Daniel, As always, thank you so very much for your lucid scientific explanations for bodyweight training! You're always spot on; I love it! Quick question: you mentioned that resistance bands are a poor training tool for pull-ups because it helps where you need the most strength. Does this also apply to planche training? I have been primarily training planche with a resistance band...do you recommend I just work on tucks and advanced tucks, maybe incorporate both bands and tucks? Much thanks! Quinton

If it helps, for me a resistance band helped me a lot. Before i couldn’t do one pull-up. And i didn’t have a gym membership or anything only a pull up bar and a resistance and with the resistance band i could do 5 pull-ups. And the best way for training strength is repitition and those 5 pull-ups 5 sets a day 3 days a week helped a lot. Eventually i could do 10 pull-ups with the band. I took it off and i could do 5 normal without the band and i continued to do them unassisted. So if you can’t do at least 5 pull-ups on your own and can’t go to the gym for the pull down machine i recommend a band cause it helps a lot at the beginning
