Don't feel discouraged, I build things often for work and it's really hard to see the progress through the mess until you get near the end. You are making progress and it is possible you will overcome the tough situations and once it's done it will be amazing. Dreams are only worth dreaming about because they aren't easily obtainable. Good luck and thank you for sharing.

My hat is off to the two of you. I know how easy it is to get screwed up building a house while doing nothing else but you two are building a house while trying to film it at the same time. I am sure trying to focus on two activities at the same time only adds to the degree of difficulty. Keep up the good work.

Jessie-- Now that you're getting close to cutting timbers, I'd like to offer some suggestions. 1. If you measure the height of the center of the log above the deck at the big end and then raise the center of the log on the small end the same height, the center line of the log will be in the center of the beam. 2 . Start cutting on the small end of the log. This will make it easier to see what size beam you can get out of this log. 3 . After you cut the first side off and roll the log, make sure the cut side is perpendicular to the blade. This will make the log square. Good luck --- a fellow LT15 owner

Having built my three storey out of ICF, I hired in the bracing for the walls. To hear you say, you do not know of any other type of bracing. Watch the tutorials. My Wife and I, both fit, did the walling and bracing ourselves. You are probably half our age and making a mess. The ever expanding gap, should not arise, if you are bonding. Every manufacturer, says, start at the corners and work you way in.

@Pure Living for Life I HIGHLY recommend that when you have to drill concrete that pull out the generator and use a corded 3/8 or 1/2 inch drill with a hammer feature, mostly for the torque but also to not kill your batteries.

Jesse, you are a fortunate man in that Alyssa has been prepped in life as a climber and not afraid to over extend her reach while drilling holes. I know a bunch of men that are completely unable to reach out with a drill. You might consider building a framed up scaffold to minimize the risk of injury though. Fun times guys.

@Christodophilus
@Christodophilus 7 жыл бұрын
For all those who may be concerned, Alyssa is up on a ladder, doing all the work - I can tell you as a husband and wife DIY team, ourselves, there are jobs you are just better at. My husband is great at lifting stuff and sucks at details. I can lift stuff, but not for as long as he can. I burn out. But my mind always stays sharp on the details. So you'll often see me on top of ladders, doing fiddly stuff, while he's running heavy jobs from the ground. And if you've ever had a "sustained" build, which doesn't mean a weekend project, with five days off in between, you're always snapping at each other. Not because you're cross, but because you're pushing through the threshold of exhaustion. Next time you see an Ironman, or Olympic swimmer with a microphone under their face, being asked a simple question - see if they don't use a shouty, exhausted voice. They're trying to push the words out, through muscle fatigue. Jesse & Alyssa, do a decent job of working through problem solving, fatigue and video editing, to ensure the content is put up. Even though we haven't built our own house, we've worked months at a time, building retaining walls and digging through clay by hand. While my husband also worked an outside job, and I looked after our two kids. Tempers fray, and there's plenty of apologising. When you're both going through it, you both understand why it's hard to hold the happy face you start with, at the beginning of the day. So long as you can hug at the end of the day, it's a good day. :)

You guys are awesome. And, like you, we are looking to build our home very soon, and just this morning, after looking at some of the quotes for someone else to dig the basement, driveway, trench for the lagoon, etc., I mentioned to the wife that we should by a backhoe and do the work ourselves, including the ICF basement! And that’s when I ran across your video “WE BOUGHT A BACKHOE”... great video! Look forward to viewing all your videos. Really anxious to see how your ICF walls come out. We’re hoping to break ground next spring. Good luck on everything!

I love watching your videos. I have one suggestion to make. Before you pore the concrete enlist a contractor that is experienced with ICF. ICF is a different animal than regular formed concrete. If you spend $1000 for the expertise and don't have a blowout it is well worth the money. A blowout can put your whole project in jeopardy. Do not underestimate the repercussions of a blowout. OVERBUILD and DON"T RUSH in this phase. I love watching your videos and I am pulling for the both of you. Press on.

I'm not trying to be disrespectful but you two are making a major job out of this! This is an easy project and easy for you also. Slow down, make notes, concentrate on the work needed, get organized and think ahead about THREE or FOUR moves or more. ********This is like playing chess, think and concentrate!********......."you've got this!!!!!".......work smarter not harder! Hopefully you don't consider this as unwanted advice because it also applies to All OF THE BUILDING PROCESSES that you'll encounter in the rest of the house. GOOD LUCK, I'm a friend that is on your side! ....13

Looks like some progress today. The Concrete will self level to a great extent. Just shoot a good chalkline inside the blocks. . Some will get covered by concrete but you smooth the concrete to that level. It sounded from the phone call, the contractor is thinking along those lines. Great to see you both working as a team. This is going to be a nice house to be enjoyed for decades.

Keep on keeping on, it's called rough carpentry / framing for a reason. Think about taking a sawsall with a long blade or a hand saw and trimming the first course of ICF blocks at the bottom, slip the blade between the block and concrete footer and trim away, fix any excessive gap with spray foam between the footing and first course. you may need peel back a section of water proofing on the outside and work from both sides and then patch the membrane after the pour. If you need to cut out a larger piece of ICF to make a window to work thru do it and then replace the foam window and tie bracing thru the wall to secure it in place.

I really enjoy your videos, and truly appreciate what you are doing with this property. I have flipped a few houses and learned a lot in doing so. It took me until the third house to realize that being the general contractor, and subbing out some of the work that I had little or no experience with, could save me loads of time and frustration. I still did most of the work myself, but left the more specialized jobs for others to complete, and while the sub could knock out that job in much less time than it would take me to do it, I saved money by completing other tasks while they were working on the one I didn't want to do myself. I know this situation is different in that you may not want to sell the property after you are done building, but the principle still applies. Best of luck completing this project, and please don't let the trolls discourage you from sharing more of your experience with us.

Congrats on the courage to start this kind of endeavor as a couple, I know how frustration caused by not having the extra help one sometimes need can put strain on one's marriage. About the build itself and not being familiar with this ICF system I can't see any real advantage of using these lego like systems in comparison to standard brick or wooden or steal formwork and concrete.

So many times I have been accused of being a nitpicker. Building forms and screeding off concrete people helping me have gotten pissed off because even on a sidewalk, I insist on getting the grade right. Making absolutely sure on structures that the beams, rafters, joists and stuff are in the right place. Eighth of an inch off? No effing way. I want everything so close I can't even see an error. So ya, I am obsessive, compulsive. And you didn't correct a mistake. You fudged over it. I would have used a saw on the bottom and taken out enough to "fudge" it down into place. But honestly, I would have screed my form much better and made sure my forms were absolutely correct. I'm also a complete asshole when people refuse to listen. Best person I ever had help me was a fifteen year old kid. He didn't know anything and did exactly what I asked him. His four year old little brother didn't do too bad either. Worst people I have had work with me have been people who think that their skills in machining or flying a helicopter for the Air Force translate directly into building skills. Machinist guy was amazed I could follow a straight line with my power saw. He also didn't know why I started at one end of a fence installing a post with extreme care and then went to the other end and installed the last post second. He seriously didn't understand about string lines. He thought I was too picky about putting in posts. Hey, one complaint I never heard, "It's too good for us". No one ever said that.

Now that you are driving many long screws, it might be useful to try out a magnetic drive guide. It does look like a gimmick, but this one works. Put the long screw on the bit, extend the sleeve close to the end, put the end of the screw where you want it, push a little and hold the screwdriver so the screw isn't pushing on the sleeve. It's easy to drive a 3" screw an arms length off to the side. I use the DeWalt 6" as a matter of habit. I do tend to break them every 3-4 years, which I think is reasonable.(half the time it's because I dropped the drill) Many sizes and several manufactures.

So you are not experts.. funny thing is I never heard you say you were... I started my working life as a carpenter, then up skilled to become a Joiner... now I'm a Master Joiner ... the point of me telling you this is that I need to call in advice from time to time on projects... and in relation to square houses .. I can assure you there are not 2 square walls anywhere in the world ... and if your told there is... well that person who is telling you that is lying .... Keep doing what your doing.. Much respect to you and your dreams

People posting tips, pointers, suggestions, and getting angry that they are doing things wrong and "why won't you listen to us", these videos are not of work that was done yesterday. What you are watching happened at least a week ago if not longer. Stop getting angry, because even if your comments weren't ignored, they are still weeks to late.

I worked for a carpenter who has been a carpenter for 20+ years. He asked me one time "do you know the difference between a carpenter and a good carpenter" I said no, he said "a good Carpenter knows how to fix his mistakes."

Don't let the little stuff get you down. Having worked in construction most of my working life there is always a problem to be solved. Usually when you least need one to arrive....
