Well I was finally able to get a lawn planted on the New Country Dream home!! It took several steps over the last 2 months, but it looks like it turned out awesome! Watch from start to finish, and that I saved probably $2,000 that it would have cost for a landscaper.

I like the ATV idea for a tractor. Here's a trick you might try sometime: Get about a 12 foot length of chain link fence, lay it out flat, put some pieces of lumber on top of it for weight and then hook up to the narrower end of the piece of fencing and tow it behind the ATV. It works great for smoothing out a new lawn bed. It works like a sander, just give the high spots extra attention and they'll disappear. I used to use a tractor but I think an ATV would be much better.
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
I've found that the chain link thing doesn't work as well, just not enough weight to cut down humps... Although the ATV drag is really more for just finishing work, but I sure wish It could knock some serious humps down, that would be a lot easier!

Hi: I think you worked it out so the grass will look real good. I was looking in the background and could see your Service Panel. I notice the you don't have a roof over the top of it. You should put a A roof over it for two main reasons. One is to keep the weather off of it and the second is electric Safety. You will be surprised how much it help keep the connection from going bad. I helped build six of them for our Boy Scout Camp and It has helped. Your place is starting to look great and can hardly wait to see the new lake full of water. Have Fun

Thanks, I appreciate it. Not sure if I"m going to put a roof over that or not. They are all outdoor panels meant to take the elements, but I'd agree, if you can keep the rain and UV (already pretty shaded) off, it should last longer before issues..

Something I found for fertilizer, is an organic fert called Milorganite. Bc it is organic it is safe for children/animals. You can buy it at Lowe's. It's cheap too - like $7-8 a bag. It has a recommended amount (36lb bag for 2500sqft) you put down, but you can put as much down as you want and not burn the lawn (or for seeds) not ruin it (for seeding they recommend 2 bags for 2500sqft). And it is naturally slow releasing, put it down in spring, july 4th, and fall. Chemical makeup is: 5.0% Total Nitrogen (N) = *3% Water Insoluble (slow-release) N + 2% Water Soluble N 2.5% Total Iron (Fe) 4.0% Available Phosphate (P2O5) 1.2% Available Calcium (Ca)

Hi I work on a sod farm in Florida and also run a installation crew for the company and we always run a cultipacker after we mulch the seed with hay... It seems to help with the wind blowing the hay off and it will poke the hay it in to the ground to help with rain water washing it off.
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
You know, I actually thought of that, but the cultipacker I have has deep furrows and I wasn't sure if I would just cause 'rumble strips' on the lawn by using it... Good point Though! We'll see how she turns out!

Kap, have you ever heard of a tool called a rake, long wooden handle pointy things on the end. The reason landscapers charge that much money because of the hand work. You were ok with the drag mat before seeding but without hand raking you will feel every bump and hole when it comes time to mow. After you hand rake you can then seed and fertilize, but with that soil you need a starter fert like 38-24- 11 or there about. Now that you got your seed and fert down take a leaf rake turn it over and drag over the seed back and forth, with an area the size of yours that would only take 15 minutes. what that does is just covers the seed with the perfect amount of soil. all that is left to do is mulch and water and in about 10-14 days depending on what type of seed you used you will have a very high rate of germination. Then wait until you have a fairly established lawn before you repair any bare spot or ruts. If you have any questions you can fly me out and I will be at you total service. Sir.
@kapperoutdoors
@kapperoutdoors 7 жыл бұрын
Dang, I totally forgot that I do have a landscape rake!!! I could have at least raked out much of the gravel... :( I ran the drag over the first layer of seed in essence 'raking' it in... Then I put a 2nd layer of seed over top of that.. I know this is not professional landscape, but I'm pretty confident that it will turn out if I get germination before any torrential rains! As far as fertilizer, I just used what I had on hand, which is why it was generic 12-12-12. Lets see how it does. Of course if you lived closer I sure wouldn't turn down the help in doing it!! lol

Man you are doing some great work around your property, the new lake work vids were good to watch. Your lawn work has me mystified please tell me how you intend to keep the grave in place on the drives and the lawn soil where it should be. please except some constructive advice from a guy who's been there and done it, several times. We do and sometimes fail but sometimes some one whos been there before tis you the wink and boy can it save you money and nags from HER In DOORS. Man run a kerb line this will give you drive way a buffer to press on and prevent spreading it will also work the other way for the lawn, lawns have roots and they are for ever growing so they exert pressure sideways, so you need a break point for the drive and the lawn. kerb lines can be precast units laid on and backed by concrete, or concrete laid in formwork, if you have suitable timber on site have it machined into planks, rot treated and form a kerb line with suitable timber stakes. After the lawn has settled it will make for easy mowing and you wont have gravel wrecking your mower blades. I'm from the UK and it's amazing seeing how you have such a different method of tackling tasks. now I've worked around the world and find watching people a fascinating hobby, non of us are wrong we just do different. I'll keep subscribing and I want to see that new lake filled. god bless, BS
