@@UndertheMedian I believe alot of your children's attitudes and personalities were allowed to flourish by being homeschooling! Public school is full of jealous,spoiled rotten,competitive individuals,and bully type individuals that make attending public school a huge challenge when one's family is not so well to do! It causes a soul to become bitter!

Being a single mom raising 2 boys, we were forced to be frugal. One of the things we would do to get the "name brand" clothing was to shop at the end of season and get the clothing at a deep discount. Dillards was a favorite place to get their jeans and t shirts at 75% off.

My grandmother's family grew up in the great depression and all members worked. Whether it was picking and selling berries, chopping wood and selling to neighbors, baking pies, picking pinecones, making's bootleg whisky or a regular job everyone gave their wages to my great grandmother and she would pay the rent and expenses. The family members got a small allowance of "pocket money" for whatever they wanted. She recalls sleeping in tents in the summer time and having a outdoor kitchen for cooking. My grandmother wasn't very thrifty but was a great baker who had a number of side gigs while being a housewife. My grandmother created beautiful wedding cakes, wedding flowers, sold Christmas trees in her front yard as well as fresh wreaths she made in her dinning room. Quite an entrepreneur for sure. I think having skills can be a good frugal thing to have to make money when times are lean. Enjoy the channel ❤️

When I asked my grandparents about the great depression, they said it did not affect them because they had a smokehouse full of hams, a yard full of chickens, cows, and several corn fields. (Georgia)

Unfortunately, I was never taught to save money so I spent every dime on clothes, shoes, purses, I had maybe 10 credit cards at 20 years old. Now my kids are grown and I live alone I'm now saving and really doing what I need to do to suceed....so glad I ran across your website!!

Hope, in response to your son's comment about line drying towels...I felt the same way when I bought my first house and started line drying our clothes outside. If it helps, I found that if I popped all my fabrics in the dryer for a touch up 10 min cycle before folding/hanging and putting away, it helped to soften them down without the electric expense of full cycle drying. My family was good with that compromise!

As a child in Denmark in the 70’s nobody had dryers and stiff towels was the norm. We didn’t know it could be any different. And a stiff line dried towel softens right up as soon as you use it once.

When you were talking about wearing off brand jeans and cloths it made me think back. I always got kids second hand cloths or goodwill cloths. When I taught my oldest on shopping I gave her $25 to shop at goodwill to see how much she was able to purchase. Then I took her to Kohls to have her see what she could buy for $25 there. Great lesson learned. She stayed open to second handed cloths.

A great way to have soft clothes is to put in dryer for 3 minutes and then hang up. They dry softer and wrinkle free. It’s not too late to try! Corrugated cardboard! 😂

I laughed when they comment on hanging clothes on the line to dry, I live in Ireland and it’s an everyday occurrence. I love the smell of freshly air dried clothes, and Mom you are right hard towels are better for your skin. 😂❤️

This may surprise you but in my neighborhood in the USA it is illegal to hang laundry to dry outside because it is considered ugly and associated with poverty. Lol so I hang mine in the garage or in the home. It's not humid where I live so it's fine.

My parents didn’t charge me rent when I was in school. As the youngest of six, my parents couldn’t have paid for our school, but paying for rent, (and food) allowed me to finish college. They also helped a bit with books when I couldn’t quite cover the cost.

I grew up poor! There were 6 kids in my family. I picked berries,babysat,cleaned houses. I wore hand me downs and homemade clothing, and survived. I recently retired from a nursing career. I paid for my own education. Thanks for raising fiscally responsible kids. I have 2 boys, who are both homeowners in their 20's. I watch FB marketplace and am appalled that people would pay $150 for a pair of jeans, not like them, "miss the return window", and sell them for $20! Not the way I was raised! Blessings!

I have to say I prefer a line dried towel, feels like it gets me dryer quicker, I hate towels that are so soft they just move the water around. Must say that your boys are a credit to you and Larry. All the best x

When I was in high school ( in Gary IN 1967~1971) several of my friends of European families, had to pay rent. If they had ANY type of job, But what their parents did was put their rent in the bank. Then when the kids got married the parents matched the amount saved an gave it to the newlyweds to buy a house!

As an Australian, drying laundry outdoors is the norm. I love the corrugated iron towel feel. Its great to loofah your skin. Have never known any different. Our clothes dryer is literally used a couple of times a year in an emergency. We use a clothes drying rack if the weather is bad rather than the dryer.

Great job! Loved watching this! I homeschool my 6 kids too, and they would think the brand name clothing question was odd. We call our kids' allowance their "paycheck," and they get their age in dollars every 2 weeks. It helps with a lot of little expenses I wouldn't be able to keep track of for so many kids. They're learning to save and they're so generous towards each other too. Thanks for sharing your family!

Like my mother taught me, we shop for most clothes at charity shops. My teenage daughter is a very edgey fashionista at a tiny cost. And my 12 year-old son loves brands and is very savy getting brand name clothing with his own money at a fraction of the cost. I like shopping at charity stores for my money to go to a good cause. I also like the eco print!

What a Great Video. Thank You for sharing this. My wish is that every parent with children can watch this video. I hope this opens the eyes of many parents nowadays who are raising a family. It's sad to say but too many parents give their kids way too much of everything all of their lives and never teach or prepare them for the ways of the world as I would say. It really scares me how many of these kids are growing up in today's world and not have a clue on how to survive out in the world when they become adults. They are not taught how to save or budget their money. How to do certain chores as in keeping their own bedrooms clean, doing their own laundry & dishes, washing windows, vacuuming and moping floors, mowing, raking leaves, shoveling snow or even making a meal by themselves. Hope & Larry I must say you have raised 4 wonderful boys in which 2 are now out of the house & 2 are still at home. Their future wives will be very happy wives one-day. I know you are very proud of them as any parents would be seeing their children be happy well-adjusted, hard working & successful. You two really did it right and I'm sure your sons are very thankful for all you have done to prepare them for the world and their future. Wishing you and your sons an amazing life of frugality. When our kids got old enough to realize that labels were a thing, we told them that if they wanted the name brand, then they had to pay the difference on price. Once they figured out how expensive those labels cost, they usually made the choice to spend their money on other things.

As a British person I find it so strange that Americans don't line dry their washings. Even if it is freezing here we prefer to dry washing outside as long as the weather is dry. It's completely normal here to never have had a tumble drier.

Line drying clothes was a problem? Wow. Here in Australia that is the norm if you have a garden… you have a clothes line. Dryer only used in the depths of winter of drying outside isn’t an option. Apartment dwellers are more likely to use indoor clothes drying racks than a dryer as well.

That's funny about the line drying of the clothes. We have line dried our clothes for 11 years. I am disabled now and asked if my kids (who are adults and live at home) wanted a dryer now since they have to hang up clothes. They both said no and still hang 1 to 2 loads every day.

In the uk and have a garden you most likely line dry. I love the smell of freshly dried clothes straight off the line. If a bit crispy, put it in the dryer for 5 minutes. 😊

We have two teenage daughters right now and homecomings, formals, proms etc. are always here it seems! We get BEAUTIFUL dresses at the Goodwill and Salvation Army. Last prom my oldest got a beautiful dress for $2.50 at the Salvation Army. It was stunning on her.

Regular dresses at our Salvation Army cost $14, fancy dresses start at $19.99 and upwards. Goodwill is worse with higher prices. Very sad!

@@happycook6737 Oh my goodness. Our dresses at Salvation Army are $5 then go half off pretty quickly. Our dresses at the Goodwill are $6.49 which is an increase from $5 recently. But those go half off pretty quickly as well.

Oh my gosh those young men had a deal only paying 100 a week! When you think of it you fed them they had everything paid for so $100 a week is nothing. My siblings and I unless we were in school just like you had to pay rent and I think it was the best thing they ever did for us. It taught us how to budget, And made us realize that when we went out on our own we would pay about three times as much. I think more parents should do this with their children. I think your boys turned out great and I think if they decide to move back in you can at least triple that amount L O L

Love this you’ve raised lovely young men. I was shocked at the line drying in scotland that’s all we do unless it’s raining. The tip is to put a spoon of white vinegar into the washing machine to soften towels

Same here in New Zealand. It's perfectly normal to have clothes and linens drying on the line. There's nothing better than the fresh smell of laundry still warm from the sun.

My brother charged his daughter rent for the 6 months she lived at home before she married. Naturally he paid for the wedding and gave she and her husband a monetary gift. When she was leaving the hall to go off for the honeymoon he gave her back her "rent" money too. He told her to put it towards a house. She did.

Here in England 🇬🇧 most people line dry clothes. We've never had a tumble dryer. It's nicer line drying than tumble drying. That's just my opinion tho. This is a good video. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your delightful sons with us. I also have four adult sons. I laughed so much when they said that line drying the clothes was the worst frugal thing they experienced growing up. Here in Australia everyone line dries their washing, it is very much the norm. Obviously climate plays a big part, but most Australians would only use a dryer on rare occasions. I just love hearing how everyday things can be so different depending on where you live.

About not having the latest clothes or tech: let the kids choose one item to buy on brand, and then let them price things out, make them have to pay half. That usually helps them realize the value of frugality, especially if you can show them cheaper, reasonable alternatives.

To spend money with purpose and no impulse purchases are great lessons to learn. I don’t know why people think that frugal people don’t dress well. My son is a teenager and I am fascinated by these questions. I know he has to wait for big purchases but he wears most name brand clothes I bought at consignment sales or through hand me downs. My biggest financial regret is spending on eating out too much when I was young.

I am looking forward to this video& I will compare how I was raised and count how many things are the same! I was raised for a short while by parents who were raised by parents that had survived the great depression! Looking forward to this one!

Both my parents were raised during the depression. Dad graduated from high school in 1933 and Mom in 1939. They were really good with money. I learned so many valuable lessons from them. I'm sure you did too, Lisa.

@@larryware1 yes I sure did learn alot of valuable lessons that have sustained me in my adult life! My Dad unfortunately passed at the age of 35,he was born in1942,I was 12 years old,one never forgets that occasion!
