This wasn't the primary reason for Nilfgaard's invasion of Cintra. Nilfgaard invaded because their emperor (Emhyr var Emreis who shows up to this banquet later disguised as the cursed Sir Urcheon of Erlenwald) was intent on reclaiming his daughter (Cirilla) from Queen Calanthe as well as taking over the Northern kingdoms. Prior to Emhyr taking power in Nilfgaard (which is when this scene takes place) the previous rulers of the Empire had been viewed as somewhat of a joke and too incompetent to pose much of a threat to the independent Northern kingdoms (Emhyr's father Fergus var Emreis was actually usurped from his title as Emperor of Nilfgaard which forced Emhyr himself into exile for awhile as a child). Once Emhyr reclaimed his status as Emperor of Nilfgaard all of that changed because he was actually a very competent and strategic ruler and that of course put Cintra in immediate danger since they are the southernmost Northern kingdom and are only separated from Nilfgaard's borders by the Marnadal Stairs.

Their costumes were designed back in the "toxic masculinity", "overcompensating", and "microaggression" days. (Netflix's) Nilfgaard was supposed to personify these things, hence the costumes and even the dialogue in this very scene.

I believe it conquered other southern territories such as Nazair, Metinna, Ebbing, Toussaint (pretty sure that one is more of a client state but still). These regions are not mentioned in the games at all but as I understood it while reading Ciri finds herself around these parts during the books. To be fair the books don't do a good job establishing the geography of the world. I wish Sapkowski had added some sort of map of the continent in his books but there really is no official version of it.

There will be these moments you come to like some of them, and you'll even think they're pretty good people or good rulers-- then you'll get to see the other side of the coin. Take Foltest, an incredibly charismatic leader and easy to like. He's even a good military leader. Unfortunately, he bedded half the women in his realm, and because of that, had to fight endless civil wars over succession against his own nobles, right up until the moment of his death, at which point, he left the country in a much weaker and disunified place than it would have been and all but doomed it to fall to Nilfgaard as result (and even if it didn't fall to them, it'd have fallen to Redenia or Kaedwin). Then take Saskia, the people's Queen of Aedern, charismatic, chivalrous, kind-- and utterly naive and unprepared to handle the politics that come with leadership, especially of a country surrounded by enemies, none of which acknowledge her right to rule. For as impressive as her rebellion was, even under the best of circumstances for them, Aedern would be but a footnote, incapable of keeping its independence for even a year against the greater powers north and south.

Sapkowski is Pole, so the connection of Russia and Germany is our worst nightmare. That is the origin of Nilfgard. Netflix is american company, so they created quite diffrent version of Nilfgard.
