I learned this the hard way. At work we have a machine that spins a blade and inside is a thick brass ring that rotates on the shaft to take the wear and tear off the the metal shaft and keep things balanced. It kept coming loose no matter how many times I added LOCTITE to the large set screw that held the brass ring to the shaft. Then I realized that the grease on the shaft had caused a very thin film on the set screw. Cleaned it up like this gentleman did and no more loose set screw.

I bought some just the other day and I repaired a few things, it seems to be quite good. I collect army figurines and vehicles. I accidently snapped off 2 tank barrels. The lock tight glue secured them firmly in place. I also repaired a radio, a battle ship and an old figure I made in wood work. I sure will be buying it again. I like to repair things, rather that throw away and buy a new one. I wish more people did that, it doesn't help that everything these days seems to break at a moments notice. Not sure why though, I heard it's because the companies that sell them want you to go out and buy a new one, in built obsolescence I think it's called. They purposely build things to break, it would seem this is indeed the case in many things today!

Thanks for that information. Cleaning parts first! Doh! I missed that step. I have some loctite 518 gasket stuff and I’m using it in a circular groove I made on a schedule 80 PVC flange. Groove is 1/4” deep with 3” ID and 3.5” OD. I have a clear Excelon 4000 3” PVC tube that fits in that groove. There will be another grooved flange on top for the other end of the tube. Once the upper and lower flanges are assembled with the 3” tube in the center, I hold them together with 4 half inch bolts that fit through the flange holes (outside tube radius). This vessel will be under pressure (175 psi), and used to collect water in a compressed air system. My question to you is how to apply the 518 gasket goo. The tube has a ring of thin gasket material on both ends held on with RTV. I was thinking of gooping the 518 on the tube, gasket material, and flange groove. Then letting it cure without pressure. The bolts, when tightened will squeeze the flange and tube together to seal it from leaks. Is this sound? And do I need the loctite 7387 accelerator on the parts first, or not? Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Paul I wish I could send you a drawing for clarification. I made the grooves in the flanges with my little wood lathe. Not exactly smooth surfaces.

Pierce the tip? I have a small tube of Loctite 242. I'd love to apply it to some threads, but as hard as I squeeze the tube, nothing comes out. I look at it with a magnifying glass and don't see a hole at the tip. I don't see it mentioned anywhere, but are we supposed to find a pin and pierce the tip? Or snip the tip off?

Just snip the top, place a drop on clean paper or cardboard and use a tooth pick and dip and apply on screw thread. On small fasteners that's all you need and with the tooth pick you can place it precisely where you want it.

I make sure the threads are dry and put some muscle into it. Yeh, its not "by the book" but its worked for 20 years with collapsing stock setups. Hard to overtighten with a standard wrench because of its short handle. But don't put a breaker bar on it is what I'm saying. Also I've NEVER had a castle nut come loose and "GASP* I even put them on "backward" so the square notches don't rip up my skin or high quality gloves.

@JB-pb9xv
@JB-pb9xv 7 ай бұрын
That's what confuses me about using Loctite. Whenever you get any kind of gun parts or accessories, the screws they come with typically have some Loctite already on the threads. An compared to a bare screw, you can definitely feel the resistance that the Loctite causes. But that Loctite pre put on the set screws is already cured, and even completely dried. An yet it's definitely effective, whereas when you put Loctite on a screw and then immediately drive it in. Like he was saying, it almost acts as like a lubricant. So on the directions when it says that the Loctite will "cure" in 20 minutes, and will dry within 24 hours. That makes me wonder if perhaps you should let the screw sit and dry for 20 minutes, to let the Loctite cure before driving it in. Or even longer to let it fully dry, ir to just drive it in and allow it to dry while screwed in. Because the other thing about screwing it in while its wet, is that allot of it "backs out." Whereas when it's dried in the screws that come with it, it has a firm stick and obvously none of it is backing out.
@LoveLikeaHurricane
@LoveLikeaHurricane 5 ай бұрын
The screw with dried loctite gives a false reading too because it causes extra resistance than a screw with nothing on it

You stated something incorrectly concerning the torque values for the screws. You stated that since the Loctite acts as a lubricant, it will give you false readings. This is EXACTLY OPPOSITE of what is true. The torque values given are for screws with lubrication. That is the ONLY WAY you can get consistent and accurate readings. Torqueing dry screws will give you false readings. It is not the torque that holds the screw in place, but the amount of tensile stress, or "stretch," that you put in the screw. The torque value is a way to measure something that correlates to the tensile stress you have put in the screw. If you measure this torque on a dry screw, a higher amount of the torque applied is used to overcome friction instead of "stretching" the screw. A lubricated screw will use less torque to overcome friction, thus allowing the screw to be "stretched" to the proper tensile stress for holding the joint. ALL TORQUE VALUES FOR SCREWS ASSUME LUBRICATION IS PRESENT. You should correct your video, and your practices.

I think it depends on the rifle, especially the caliber, and size of the scope. I don't shoot above 30-06 or 25WSSM in an AR. No need for rings loctited. The type of ring and its quality may figure into the equation as not all rings are made equal.

@@DeepSouthernTX you're thinking of Harley Davidson,, rifles don't vibrate, torque those rings to 15-18inlbs they'll NEVER come loose by themselves..

Absolutely not how to use loctite. It goes in blind holes not on the screw.

The sound of old men playing with mouth moisture levels 🤢 When I get to that age, I’m just going to take a vow of silence.
