My daughter, only 32yrs old, has just passed away after a battle with cancer for 18 months and this song/vid truly reflects my loss. As much as it hurts listening to this song and watching the storyline it is comforting to know I am not alone in grief. Thank you.

In memory of my very brave friend Evita Fytrou. Evita lost tragically her life among 102 people on Monday July 23 2018 in Mati, Greece after witnessing the death of her father and her little brother in the fire. She was running towards the sea in order to save herself from the flames and lost her life by falling from a cliff. Did the smoke blinded her and thought she would fall in the water? Did she jump to her death in order to end the pain? Uguess we will never know. One thing is for sure, I won't forget you Evita. My deepest respect to anyone who lost a loved one in this horrible disaster. This wasn't fair. We can't forget this.

The symbolism in this video is mind blowing. Three parts to pay attention to: The old man, the dog, the birds. The old man is a symbol of the god Odin, often depicted as an old man with a beard carrying a spear (or in this case, a gun). He presided over the land of Valhalla. Odin was often accompanied by a wolf. The birds symbolize Huginn and Muninn, which are a pair of ravens. Their names translate as "thought" (Huginn) and "memory" (Muninn). Every morning, the two ravens would set out and fly all over the world. Every night they would return to Odin and bring him knowledge and news from his kingdom. In the Poetic Edda, Odin expresses concern that the birds will not come back from their daily flight. I believe this video is about that. The old man's daughter has died. The song is from the voice of the daughter/bird, trying to tell him what she remembers from her flight. She remembers the flash of white, turning to black, and being pulled out to sea. She remembers her death. But the old man doesn't want to accept that, and every day he sets out to look for her. You'll notice that the first bird in the video immediately catches his attention, only to be followed by a look of disappointment. Just like Odin in Edda, every parent fears for the safety of their children. The old man doesn't want to accept that the worst has happened, so every night, he returns to his throne, watching and hoping for her return. His faithful wolf remains at his side, but he his lost without his birds who brought him knowledge and memories. The bird is herself now just a memory, and the great Odin is now a broken man.

As a father myself I can't imagine the pain of losing my daughter. I am forever grateful for her health and for being able to ensure her wellbeing... I regularly stop by here to remind myself to be grateful.

I interpret it as him losing his daughter and family in a tragedy. It happened near the ocean, so he retreated to the mountains so he didn't have to look at it again. But even there he can't escape the death, as he is faced with having to kill things as a means of survival.

I could hear them howling from afar I saw them rushing to your car In a moment all went screaming wild Until the darkness killed the light I remember running to the sea The burning houses and the trees I remember running to the sea Alone and blinded by the fear And the river flows beneath your skin Like savage forces kept within And all is wasted in the sand Like breaking diamonds with your hand I remember running to the sea Remember falling to my knees I remember gliding off the shore Until I touched the ocean floor And the river flows beneath your skin Like savage horses kept within And all is wasted in the sand Like breaking diamonds with your hand And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me

The song is so beautiful...this video made me tear up. My interpretation isn't much different than others. I think the man lost his daughter in some tragic way. He remembers her as a young child. Perhaps the older version of her represents the age she died, or the age she might be if she hadn't died as a child. How sad it must be to live alone, with only memories of a lost loved one to hold onto. I can't imagine that...The world is so beautiful, but also filled with pain and death.

My father killed himself nearly 12 years ago. Each year for me now represents a countdown to when I reach the age he was. It's surreal, both in comparing how much I've already accomplished, and thinking of the "well, what now?" moment in 10 years. Some similar instances of a memory triggering in a location, imagining the person there and flashing back to the present.

Always thought that her voice has something of a natural/universal force. It just seems so powerful and effortless to me. Maybe it's also the (interesting, to say the least) kind of songs and lyrics she sings that make me feel like that, but yeah. Actually, I'd say it's one of those voices that can truly make me hate my own voice... good thing I always try to avoid singing anyway, lol -..-"
@hawkstrike18
@hawkstrike18 5 жыл бұрын
Personally, I didn't use 'interesting' to refer to her voice in this case, but I'm not so sure why you'd underestimate it like that :p I feel what you said is more true about some of the mainstream pop artists, and not even always ...since what they tend to sing is also to blame, usually. On second thought, I know it's your opinion (based on this song alone, more likely) but if you had listened to more of her stuff and were objective, I think you wouldn't imply her voice is kind of boring. Sure, I can see why you don't find it truly rich but saying it's not interesting is similar to me saying another artist's voice is bad just because I don't like it (btw, it's just an example, don't take every word literally). To me it might be less engaging or even annoying but that doesn't mean it's not interesting in general. Well, I guess. Can't really think of an example right now. But there has to be :p And it always depends on the music/lyrics and personal taste, obviously. Try to recall a time when an artist you didn't like at all sung something different and you ended up liking their voice, for once. Guess I tried too hard to describe my point of view again, but hey... hopefully this comment fulfilled its purpose at least, dunno.
@hawkstrike18
@hawkstrike18 5 жыл бұрын
If you've listened to many of her songs and you feel like that, fine by me :) It's not even that important. What matters is whether you can enjoy the music or not, right? You know what? Could it be that you don't appreciate simplicity as much as you should...? Because, personally, I prefer listening to artists who aren't ostentatious or something (with their singing but not only), and I can't stand singers who sound like they're trying too hard, like they're shouting, etc. Or is it just her voice? If so, yes, it has to be a matter of taste. Well, whatever xD Again, just enjoy (what you can)!

I love this song so much but it’s really difficult for me to hear without getting teary eyed because it feels very personal like it speaks directly to my heart and my experiences. This song to me is about a father-daughter relationship. A father who lost his daughter and is trying to cope. This is the most heart-wrenching music video ever. It just brings me to tears seeing this man, this father unable to cope after the loss of his daughter and how he just cant move on, still seeing her. I have recentaly lost my grandfather-my best friend and I relate deeply to this man. Everywhere I look I see him, all his things were left exactly where he left them nd it just feels like one day he's going to walk though the door and come home.

My dad was a fisherman, he died in 2015, we were living in different cities, our relationship was never the dream one all I had was memories from the past from our country house, but I loved him. I didn't have his future but I had his past, I had those old negatives, I used to watch them growing up, he always enjoyed nature and fishing, he had a german shepherd. When I got the news I was listening to this song and I was high af. It was just a coincidence, I always loved Royskopp but this was a coincidence. It was 2015 9th of Jan when we lost him. Since 2015 I come back here every year to see what happened. So thank you for this, I couldn't have asked for something better.

this is probably one of the best electronic songs written in our generation showing the brilliance of Roykshopp. On top of that, the selection of this video really shows the loneliness and despair of life in Scandinavia when you don't have someone beside you.

When I hear this song I can't stop thinking of what happened at Mati Greece, "The burning houses and the trees,I remember running to the sea" exactly what happened on 23/07/18 so much pain and fear for many people "when the darkness killed their light".. Such an old song describes exactly the tragedy happened to my country nowadays.. So beautiful and meaningful song... ⓖⓡ

Best thing in this song is that you can explain the lyrics and the video in so many different ways.... it combines every kind of pain... i mean...if you broke up its your song to listen...if you lost a father..a mother...a loving person... a dog...if there is any tragedy... !!! so many different kind of pain in one song!

I keep listening to this song since it was released. And every time I hear it, I wish every human being on this planet will keep in mind the fact that our lives are extremely fragile and priceless. We need to love ourselves and everyone around. This is the best thing we can do to each other. So please do it. There is not a signle reason in this world for the hate.

This song is part of a very sad and important part of my life. Yes, like this music I was running to the sea, and trying to running of my own life. Trudy, this is, maybe, our song and the song of our lives. I'll love you for ever my love.

I never know how a Royksopp song is going to sound when I click on a new one I haven't heard. Their next single could be death metal and it wouldn't surprise me. Probably end up being amazing too, somehow.

You never get over the loss of your child. You see her in the crowds.You see her in the mist. It hurts so bad. For decades. Then the pain finally becomes a dull roar. We will suffer that loss till we die.

My interpretation of this video is similar to many here, with the man's daughter being gone and him missing her so much. But also there is something metaforical abouy the place. There is a sense of approaching death. The fishes, the deer, the brids falling from the sky. By noticing it I kinda hoped he was dying and soon would meet her. The ending left me thinking...

Стремясь к морю (перевод Константин из Томска) I could hear them howling from afar Я слышала их далекий вой... I saw them rushing to your car In a moment all went screaming wild Until the darkness killed the light I remember running to the sea The burning houses and the trees I remember running to the sea Alone and blinded by the fear And the river flows beneath your skin Like savage horses kept within And all is wasted in the sand Like breaking diamonds with your hand I remember running to the sea Remember falling to my knees I remember gliding off the shore Until I touched the ocean floor And the river flows beneath your skin The savage horses kept within And all is wasted in the sand Like breaking diamonds with your hand And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me And the river grows inside of me
