People need to stop assuming that everything they see delivers some social message or represents a whole community. A woman being feminine in a game is being interpreted as "this developer says women are expected to stay in conventional gender roles". A woman who portrays weaknesses like insecurity as part of her character is being seen as "this developer thinks all women are weak." This creates a paradox for creators; where they need meaningful and diverse representation so as not to piss off SJWs, but will be demonized for portraying any meaningful traits or flaws. God forbid a woman wants to be a mother, or a black man slowly overcomes a drug addiction with the help of his friends and family. That's problematic. The characters represent every single person, after all. "YOU'RE racist, not me."

I really don't think I'll ever get the mentality that "if you have it in your store you're endorsing it". That's not how reality works. In physical stores it may *seem* like that since shelf space limitations exist, so they have to pick and choose what they want, and could say they don't want something for look/feel good bonus points, but on the internet, shelf space is limitless. Amazon sells Mein Kampf and and Ebay sells tons of Civil War memorabilia all the time. That doesn't mean they endorse it, that means they let people/companies sell it on there...yet somehow, Steam is the only place where I've heard the "if it's on here you endorse it" argument ever used.

In my opinion Jim's content is on a steep decline of quality. Not only his coverage on industry news but his reviews are becoming stale as well. For example, he has been recommending the Dark Souls: Remaster despite not being able to address the issues of the PC version, and how the game offers very little for PC players who already had the Prepare to die Edition plus the mods to fix the game's issues. Even with the discount that you get for owning the original game, many PC players see this release as a $20 patch that should have been for free. I understand he plays it on a console version, which is a decent release, but as a critic of the industry he should do his research on what happens on every platform. It's ironic to hear him complain about the "low effort cash grabs" on Steam so furiously while giving props to a very poor release from such a huge publisher like Namco Bandai.

This is not pro-consumer. It's good for business too. Which means it's just *pro-human.* ...and dog!

If everything is sexist, racist and homophobic, then nothing is sexist, racist or homophobic. They loose their meaning. I think titles that will likely offend a large portion of the players, need to be labeled with SOME kind of warning. Something like "Warning: Game contains highly offensive content", or something along those lines. Don't take these games down, just warn people what they might get themselves into.

Antagonizing indie developers ? I suppose that's code for "allowing games I disapprove of to be sold alongside mine". The only valid reasons for Steam to cull a game are : 1) The game is not working on the intended platform. 2) The game is hiding some type of malware. 3) The game is a scam (many asset flip games would fall into that category, or the next). 4) The developer is knowingly misleading the consumer. 5) The game is in early access but abandoned. 6) The game requires online components no longer available. 7) The game is illegal in a specific market, in which case the culling should be market specific, not global. And that's all... Steam's very permissive refund policy should take care of the rest. Steam's role is not to be an arbiter of taste or a defender of moral values. "Journalists" need to finally understand they no longer the ultimate gatekeepers and arbiters of taste, they haven't been for decades now.

An interesting video. I've seen a few of Rags' work, and although I believe some of his viewpoints are simplistic and could benefit from a bit of nuance and his way of arguing borders on being arrogant, he does raise some good points. The thing about free speech is that you can't use it to simply cater to your needs and wantings. Freedom of speech isn't designed for one group of people specifically, because it works both ways. Jim Sterling, for instance, can't defend one thing, which he enjoys, while arguing against the other thing, which he doesn't enjoy, when both issues are based on free speech. People such as him need to take a position: either they support free speech or not. They can't only support it when it benefits themselves. This is a great point that Rags has: Steam isn't defending or promoting racism or bigotry by selling games with specific content more than Amazon is promoting nazism by selling books like Mein Kampf. There is an important distinction to be made. However, having said that, I believe it's perfectly reasonable and fair to be able to point out and argue against games, and other works of art, if they portray something that goes against your beliefs and not be labeled as either a SJW or an ignorant. By using this way of, quite simply, calling the other side stupid or offended, we shut down the conversation and reduce it to nothing more than an angry fist fight that will lead to nowhere. Rather, we need to engage in adult and mature discussions about these topics, where we hear the other side with the intent of listening and understanding rather than to yell insults and exclaim how the other side is wrong and stupid for believing what they believe. Steam has taken a position of allowing controversial games to exists. I endorse this decision but I understand why it might upset some people, but I'm with the consumer and free speech on this one. It's important to note that by making this stance, Steam doesn't endorse beliefs such as racism or bigotry. People can stand up for themselves and evaluate which content they'd like to engage in. On the other side, people need to stop insulting each other for having different opinions on matters. People are not necessarily SJW's or easily offended nor are they necessarily stupid or ignorant because they have an opinion that might be different from your own. Lastly, I believe that discussions aren't and shouldn't be about winning - it's about evolving, reflecting upon the various sides of the matter and to be able to take a more informed position moving forward. People are allowed to change viewpoints, if and when they feel they might be wrong or unaware of each side of the matter. At least that's what I believe.
