George Lucas said in an interview that this project was "just for fun". I think that's the crucial point why it turned out so great... They had the knowledge and craftsmanship, but they did NOT try hard or set a goal to desperatly create a perfect movie. In my opinion that's something we should consider for all our projects...

Fun fact: this was actually Spielberg plagiarizing himself, he had previously used the same gag in his movie "1941". After that movie ended up being a huge flop, I guess he liked that particular joke so much that he didn't want to see it go to waste, and recycled it for Raiders.

Oh my gosh, I was _precisely_ the same age, and I saw it reluctantly too! My problem was, the phrase "lost ark" gave me the impression it was about looking for Noah's ark or something. There had been a recent documentary about that subject (narrated by Orson Welles), which I had been dragged to, and which bored me to tears. My mom (bless her!), in trying to persuade me to go see 'Raiders' with her, told me "Aww, come on. Han Solo's in it". So I, an only child, half-heartedly went off to see this movie, accompanied only by my mom (and my low expectations). Well... *MIND BLOWN. LIFE CHANGED.* Thanks, Mom!

Kind of funny, but I was 12 myself when I saw it in theaters. I did have the advantage of hearing a review from my friend. He went on and on how great it was. I distinctly remember him recounting the sword guy scene where he was shot by Harrison. I had a general idea of the movie, but did not regret one minute of it. To this day, the most groundbreaking film I have seen. The sequels were not even close.

Raiders is objectively a better movie, I’d say; but, much of it depends on when saw which movies. For me, I was 7 when Last Crusade came out, and I easily watched our old vhs copy of it dooooozens of times, if not up to or even over 100 times. At 41 now, while I do like the entire trilogy, I do see Raiders as the superior movie, and I see why it was nominated for Best Picture.

And before Indiana Jones there was Reginald “The Knickknack” Weatherby, a UK chess player who once cut the crust off his PB&J at school. He retired early with a comfortable nest egg after investing in medium-risk stocks over thirty years of solid work as an account in Winnipeg, and he kept his daughter, Penny, out of trouble by refusing to co-sign in a credit card application. She learned to never spend money she didn’t have. Restless after turning in his calculator and floppy drive, he worked ten hours a week at his local Piggly Wiggly. Good man. Good life.

11:22 I was 9 years old in 1981, watching this in the theater opening weekend with my parents for the 1st time. During this scene where they are opening the tomb with the thunder & lightening....there was an actual thunder and lightening storm going on outside of the theater at the time. You could hear it building up from outside before this scene, getting louder with each clap of thunder. And the rain was coming down so hard, you could hear it hitting the roof of the theater. Then, when they get the tomb open and Indy says, "Snakes, why did it have to be snakes". Boom! The power went out from the storm and everything went dark! Everyone screamed! it was amazing! Something I'll never forget! The power luckily was only out for a few moments, and everything came back on & the movie continued...still with the sounds of thunder coming from outside. It was probably the coolest movie experiences of my life. And I'm so grateful that it happened during a movie I love and cherish to this day!

Most of the "body blow" sounds were created by hitting a pile of leather jackets with a baseball bat. Alfred Molina's first credited screen role. His first scene on his first day of filming involved being covered with tarantulas. To create the sound of the heavy lid of the Ark being slid open, sound designer Ben Burtt simply recorded him moving the lid of his toilet cistern at home. The Well of Souls scene required 7,000 snakes. The only venomous snakes were the cobras, but one crew member was bitten on-set by a python. Steven Spielberg was quoted as saying: "I made it as a B-movie. I didn't see the film as anything more than a better made version of the Republic serials." To achieve the sound of thousands of snakes slithering, Ben Burtt stuck his fingers into a cheese casserole. This was augmented by applying wet sponges to the grip tape on a skateboard. Indiana Jones never kills the lead villain in any of the films. It is always the treasure itself / greed for said treasure or its powers that accounts for their deaths.

I think that “b-movie” thing is important. If it was filmed like an a-movie, it really wouldn’t have the same sort of homey and gritty texture that it does. It would have gone _too big_ with the action scenes and the comedy would be over-the-top. And Marion probably would’ve been a cliché damsel.

Your passion for movies is what got me interested in filmmaking, and I am glad that you are showcasing your passion with your recent Steven Spielberg movie reviews, like you did with Back to the Future. You can feel the passion oozing from Chris when he talks about movies that he actually enjoys talking about, as opposed to a movie like Citizen Kane. And yeah, he gave the aforementioned movies an A+, but he likes to beat around the bush with them, almost like he is afraid of what others might think of his opinion of Citizen Kane as opposed to a movie he actually grew up watching, like Spielberg movies. Like Rian Johnson with Knives Out, as Chris Stuckmann said in his review of the 2019 film, "he feels more at home." Keep up the passion, Chris, and I hope you continue to inspire many others like myself.

'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was the first movie I ever bought, but unfortunately...........I bought it on Beta...........a year before Beta lost the home video format war to VHS. Still, I used to love holding the movie in my hand revelling at the amazing artwork on the box and knowing that I could watch the movie at any time because I no longer had to rent it at a video store or hope it would one day air on TV since now I OWNED IT FOR ALL TIME. Bwahahahahahaha! I still have that Beta tape which was later replaced with a widescreen VHS tape replaced later with a DVD later replaced with a Blu-ray and I've always loved John Williams' fantastic score which I bought on cassette tape then on CD then on LP then on an expanded CD followed by two versions of an expanded 2-LP set. It's still the perfect movie unlike the subsequent sequels. :)

He can more than occasionally go back to those older films that he loves, and it necessarily doesn't mean he has to work hard at it cause it seems here that he was more than prepared than if he had a script or plan on what to say.

See that’s a bit of a crappy take. I get that there were great movies in the past. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, a LOT of my favorite movies were from that time and before, but to dismiss some of the absolute amazing films from the 2000s isn’t fair. Movies like Grand Budapest, Into the Spider Verse, There will be blood, no country for old men (which both came out the SAME year!), Mad Max: Fury Road, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Her, Blade Runner 2049, most of the marvel movies, Moonlight, Call be by your name.... the list is very long and encompasses many genres. Are they they same, no. Are they worse? No. There’s still top quality film being made today, and will continue to be made. We just also see in the macro along with all the crap. All these great old movies are hand picked for us, but for every Godfather or Seven Samurai, there were countless dogs that just crapped the bed in being terrible films, but we don’t talk about them

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark is just a one-of-a-kind movie. The only other movie that can compare to it in terms of style is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in my opinion. There are still great movies coming out today and I don't think anything from "back then" compares to it either because of how unique it is in the action genre. It's not as much "they don't make movies like this anymore" as it is "they won't be able to make a movie like that again."

They really don’t make movies like this one was made anymore.

@@SnailHatan You completely ignored my idea of Raiders of the Lost Ark just being a one-of-a-kind movie. Yeah, I agree that few movies will ever reach the high level of craft that Raiders of the Lost Ark did. Does that mean action movies have become worse today just because they can't reach the highest level of filmmaking expertise possible? It's not like movies in the 80s, or any decade, were reaching that level of status every day. Anyways, a few examples of recent action movies I could think of that sort of fit your criteria are Mad Max: Fury Road, John Wick, Inception, and Mission Impossible: Fallout.

The Belloq and Marion scene is good for character development. We see how cunning and resourceful is but we already know that. What the scene also establishes is Belloq's obsession with Indy. He's not trying it on with Marion because he particularly likes her; he's doing it because she was with Indy before. Belloq's 'what was once briefly yours is now mine' is what he's really going for. He just wants to win over his rival in every way. Which makes him even more of an A-hole when you realize when he had a chat with Indy earlier, he already knew Marion was still alive as his prisoner and was trying to get Indy to forget about her or goad him into getting himself killed.
@zerostozeros
@zerostozeros 11 ай бұрын
Yes, the Belloq and Marion scene works on multiple levels. And is necessary to help Indy realize what is most important in his life. Remember Belloq tells him he is a shadowy reflection of himself. It would only take a nudge to make you like me. The conflict inside Indy is not resolved until the final two scenes. Not to mention all the characters in the film are raiders. No one is innocent really. This scene reaffirms that fact.

Inside the industry, the hot movie of the summer of 1981 was not anticipated to be by Steven Spielberg but rather a zany comedy featuring the Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher called Under the Rainbow. If you don't know it, don't feel bad. The film was rotten and bombed at the box office while Raiders became one of the biggest hits of all time. The two films screened for exhibitors on the same day, and a traffic jam ended up determining which one I attended. Like many industry screenings at the time, the film was not yet completely finished, and the version I saw still had the since-deleted "periscope" scene, which I have never seen again. It went by quickly, just a few seconds as part of the multiple-exposure montage but it was good that it was deleted, as it did generate some chuckles of disbelief. I still regard it as one of the very best action films of all time. Thanks for the retrospective.

No, it’s evil. Remember, the nazis and Belloch were killed because they looked at it, and Indy and Marion were spared because they didn’t, which is a gesture of submission, not morality. The power that governs the ark did nothing perceptible to stop the holocaust but has the time and effort to mass murder people for looking at a pile of sand. That’s not how good guys act. And if it is all-powerful Capital G, why does he/she/it/they care so much if you look at it that it warrants such a disproportionate response? Evil.

During the final scene Indy (our good hero) has failed to save the Ark from the Nazis (evil). Then the ultimate Good (God) saves the Ark and its power from use by the Nazis (evil). This completes Indiana's journey from skeptic to believer. This is the arc of the story as told in the movie.

I saw this movie when it was released when I was 13 years old. I literally saw it 13 times in the theater. It's my favorite movie of all time. I'm very excited to watch your review!

Dude this is like all the ideas I've had about this movie ripped out of my head and put into a video. I will agree that the Marion & Belloch scene is a bit slow compared to the rest of the movie but I liked that it established further that Marion isn't the damsel in distress. She doesn't NEED Indy to rescue her, she can take care of herself more or less. All in all an amazing review man, I just gave the trilogy (there is no 4th, change my mind) a rewatch and it was awesome seeing this review hit on so many points and feelings I had while watching it. Cheers!

I always loved how shadows were used in Marion’s bar. Beautiful cinematography.

Fun to watch Chris be so excited for this review. I lived abroad with no access to films for a couple of years. When I returned to the states, my 49-year÷old MOTHER, who doesn"t even like movies much, said "I have to show you a great movie." We saw it together within my first week back. That is the magic of Raiders. It really is cross-generational magic from very talented people at the peaks of their careers. Great stuff!

1:05 I've had that experience with A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, but also Titanic and Nightmare Before Christmas, hopefully more in the future when the theatres open back up, and its amazing - if anyone gets the chance to see a music from the movie concert, you take it, it's so worth it

TOP.....MEN! This is my all time favorite movie! It has everything you could ask for. Adventure, humor, romance, drama AND horror! There's war stuff and cowboy stuff and mystic/ magic stuff! EVERY KIND OF MOVIE THERE IS is represented in this movie! I can't believe at this point in movie history that any future movie will ever take it's place. The Last Crusade was great as well but even it pales in comparison. This movie actually touches something deep inside me. Whenever I watch this movie or even see extended scenes it literally brings tears to my eyes! Thanks for the thorough and heart-felt retrospective. BEST...MOVIE...EVER!!!

So my tutor was focus puller on this film (also the D.O.P of Hellraiser, another great movie) and he told us that Harrison Ford was a perfect 'technichal' actor - always hit his marks pretty much spot on every time. Also read that apparently Steven Spielberg didn't get ill during the 'cairo' scenes because he brought his own tinned food. Love the review Chris! Keep it up!
