That was some good stuff. It always irks me when I get under the car and have to deal with those fiddly little fasteners where the middle pops out to get them out. Would much rather have a bolt or twelve to hold the panel on properly.

I doubt the current owner did the zip tie repair because if it was , I can't see him doing such a good job on that but skip out on a wheel bearing roaring . Can't be the same person .

Customer wanted specific services they overlooked the vehicle told him what else was wrong apparently the customer could not afford it at that time. Doesn’t make the customer stupid it’s called money management not everybody can afford every little thing wrong with your vehicle

No one said they were stupid or couldn’t afford it. It’s actually called “the wheel falling off at 70mph” which I guarantee (as a mechanic) is far more expensive than replacing worn parts.

Wheel bearings are like... 40 bucks, maybe 60. That combined with labor would likely be 100 to 120, let's say 160 just to be kind. If you dont have that kind of money on hand but own a car, or a fridge, or a bicycle even, and there isnt some odd or specific circumstance which lead to that, it is your own lack of control and appropriate budgeting that is causing that.

As soon as I heard "balance one tire" I knew the train was off the tracks and this customer was not about to spend any other money on the car. That said, I also suspect as soon as he sees you serviced the battery and fluids without being asked, he is going to claim a battery failure that you caused.

Seems like all 2010 vehicles have a leaking washer reservoir and by the time you find out you already poured half a gallon into it. It is so awesome to see a mechanic that loves his job and that appreciates his customers.And Peter will have a very good mentor and will be taught the correct way to treat customers cars. Which in these days is rare.

I've had people think their wheel bearings went out and it was just uneven wear on their tires that makes a horrible whirring sound. Replaced and no more sound and vibration.

That's what I was told with my ancient Ford Taurus a month ago; "The undercarriage is so rusted out, you need to remove the steering wheel and put a new car under it!" Not exactly what the mechanic said, but he did tell me I couldn't take it out on the freeway anymore because the car wasn't really being held together by anything, and if it fell apart at freeway speeds, there'd be nothing left of me to identify. I took him seriously, sold the car for parts, and bought a better, newer one.

I told a guy his 94 Infinitis front subframe was rusted through, oil leaking from everything, trans leaking, rear subframe had broken it was so rusted etc. Car had 325k miles on it and I wrote up the estimate and told him yes we can fix it but would cost more in labor and finding the subframes than the car was worth and the trans or engine could fail 3 weeks into us fixing the subframe and other issues. I almost got fired by my bosses at Infiniti for being honest. Customer accused me of trying to scare him into buying a new car. I even provided pictures of the underside of the car and showed him, the service writer and angry manager the car up in the air… best day of my life was leaving Infiniti dealership🥴

@@armandosoria7993 long story short. They are very highly-priced Nissans. So just like Toyota has Lexus. They are pretty but are just a fancy Nissan underneath. Currently as they are mostly owned by Reunalt at this point I would say they have gotten worse than when I worked for an Infiniti dealership in 2008 for several years. But on a high note issues they won't fix with TSB for free on Nissans they will fix for Infiniti because it's the premium brand. But that being said they are way more reliable than the big USA car manufacutures.

In principle I agree, but there are many things on safety inspection checklist that are not related to safety. I live in pa, and I've had cars that I simply coudn't afford to get inspected because of things like rust in the fender wells.

Something very interesting you might like to know. A British car maker had a self lubricating system that oiled all the suspension pivot points in their cars. When the engine oil was drained, the oil was strained, then poured into a reservoir in the engine bay. This had hoses going to all suspension pivot points, thus negating the need to grease the suspension.

I mean, engineers have to work within certain specifications including cost, space and tooling. As well teams are often responsible for the design of a single component, rather than one team or person being responsible for the entire design. Problems like this aren't necessarily caused by engineers, but more likely the specifications handed down by corporate overlords. Platforms that are intended to be self-serviceable often have this integrated into the design philosophy. Most people don't self-service, so for standard grocery getters it really isn't a big concern. Makes them a PITA for people who do like to turn wrenches though.

I've said for years that automotive design engineers should have to spend three months a year doing repairs on whatever part of the car they design. I'd bet it would be interesting to see what changes would get made.

Great job with the battery, air filter, and discovering the washer bottle is leaking. My washer bottle on my Caravan was leaking. It was the rubber hose. An easy repair.

Is totally ridiculous that they ignored the mechanic's advise... that wheel bearing is going to bite bad when it fails. A leaking windshield washer reservoir is not catastrophic, but should be replaced. And the air filter? That's a do it yourself job. Hope they do it for the few bucks that it costs... sheesh! As the old saying goes, pay me now, or pay me later 🤔

Agreed, but the owner might be in a situation where the $ could pay the repair, or buy day old bread and PB to feed the kids for months. OTOH if a person has means, given the condition and miles of that car… that wheel bearing would make it to the scrapper and replace the whole car.

Prob don't have any money, or have to watch carefully where their money goes. Plus, Put a wheel bearing and an air filter in a 200k + car for lets say $500. If the engine went out tomorrow, you aren't getting that $500 back. I work on my own stuff, so its only parts cost. But I feel for people who can't.

I love these videos, this is a real mechanic doing real work and telling broke customers that your car isn't running like shit because your one tire isn't balanced. The $50 fix is dead. When you see a car with zip ties holding it together, you know the owner is an idiot who would do shit repairs on everything, not just his car.

Or possibly has no money. Ever consider that? I spent a lot of years working on cars and most of the time money was the first consideration. Tell your kids they don't eat this week because they need a new ball joint... Or limp it for another three months until you have enough money for it so you don't tell the kids to just tighten the belt. Car repairs can easily run into the thousands for very minor work. I live in a town where virtually everyone does their own work, because they have to. Not everyone is rich.

Don't get me wrong, repairs are never cheap, but some stuff can't be skipped or ignored for 3 months without causing a potentially leathal failure while driving, especially if those failures are caused by bad driving habits such as resting your left foot on the brakes constantly, not realizing that they're burning threw their brake pads, likely past the point of failure if they try to avoid fixing it, and not fixing your brakes (or terrible habits) is a dam fast way to die and likely end up killing others. People freak out about Guns all day long, but Cars are 10 ~ 100x more dangerous especially when poorly maintained or operated. If they can't afford proper car maintenance then we need to force our cities to improve public transportation so it's not absolutely necessary to have a car just to live

Hey...NISSAN Motor Co. got me through my teenage years and college...I still own a Datsun pl620 truck......also that tire got that wear from being a truck spare and being too big. The rear differential rubbed on the one spot for a Loooooonnnngggg time.....that's why the rub marks are side to side and not lined up with the tread..

I had a PL620 (some people insist on calling it a Li'l Hustler). They are very well made IMO. Very tough engine and trans. Simple body. Front end can get quite worn but it is fixable. I wish one could buy a basic simple pickup truck (of any size) these days. Trucks today have as many (or more!) doo-dads and gee-gaws than a luxury car.

Hi Ray! Great video as always! I live in Pennsylvania and I owned a 2000 Nissan Altima. By the time the car hit 120K all of the sensors (mass airflow, O2, etc...) went belly up, and the catalytic converter crapped out by 130K. The big difference is that we have annual inspections in PA, so there was no option to refuse repairs on these items. Needless to say, my kids had no shoes for a few months and I started buying Toyotas.

O² sensors are wear items. I do them every 100,000 miles as routine maintenance. By then they are getting dirty and misreading anyway. Keeping those sensors good can save a cat, at least doubling the life of it. I get about 300,000 miles out of a cat. The last cat on my ancient beast was so good at 250,000 miles that the car still beat it's manufacturer's specs. Then again, what do you expect from a Red Block Volvo?

Nissan are the worst. Like you said, all my electronic sensors went belly up by 120k miles along with the catalytic converter. They're basically good until about 80k miles then it starts falling apart.

@@TheFrenchPug 2009 Nissan Altima here 140,000k still purring along but I do regular maintenance, brake work etc on my own. The biggest complaint I see online is their CVT transmissions crap out early so I'm holding my breath...

@@mikeblaz Yep. I had that go out on me too. Replaced it with a used one and sold it. You are doing good at 140k miles with no problems. Hope it stays that way. I'm at 147k on my BMW with only minor issues compared to my Nissans.

Motorcraft makes filters for all cars not just Ford cars. I'm sure it did the adequate job.

my father, a Senior Master tech at Ford for 40+ years, taught me, now an A&P, any time we deal with oil and theres useless plastic like that nissan engine cover, always spill a few drops of new oil on it and wipe it down to make it look new and shiney. it costs 5 seconds and makes the customers SO happy.

Plus his repair has structural component redundancy. My civil engineering background tells me “Do not design, build, or operate anything where a single component failure can injure or kill.” The failure of any individual zip tie will not injure or kill anyone.

Nissans are fine as long as it's not CVT and you delete the cats. But people are dumb and buy the junk trannies (which btw everyone is using CVT, so can't rag on nissan unless you blame them all). In fact, my nissans make everything except toyotas look like total pieces of trash. Ppl buy nissans and never, ever, do a single bit of maintenance or check the oil, then blame the car. Mechanics do it, too.

It's always been the same. I had a friend in high school who thought you waited until the oil pressure light came on then topped up the oil, because that's what his father did. Could habe been neglected before owner purchased the car, or they simply don't have the money for it.

Our 2006 town and country was pretty decent. The interior was built like crap, and the left side rear door stopped working, but the engine ran well until it started getting rod knock(ironically the day we sold it)

RTA, retired tech advise. Yes enjoyed video. Dealing with noisy shops and wheel bearing. I was working on them in the 80's when the front wheel drive wheel bearing issues started. I found putting them in air with engine running in gear I would touch the strut coil springs. I could instantly "feel" the rough bearing hub even in a noisy shop. Of course if I missed it meant putting the old bearing I took off on the other side. {extra work but got the job done} They were even having us pull the "cabin filter" for free for inspection. That was crazy because they always needed one and they would not replace it. Hey do some videos on cabin filter replacement, some are easy, others are bad.

The flat spot on the spare tire was a melted spot from being too close to the exhaust. I had a similar situation on my F150.

@@derekhobbs1102 Could be, but that flat spot looks like a single wheel lockup from speed, (where the driver lacked the skill to modulate the brakes). If that was the case, pulling it & throwing on the spare makes sense. It's still, (sort of), usable in an emergency, but if you replace all 5 tyres at the same time, (I do a 5 tyre rotation on mine as I often cannot get the same size/brand tyres at replacement), then leaving it until you are getting the set makes sense.

Altima 2.5 with a check engine light... Probably needs a transmission. I used to do 3 in a day. The oil leak is the o-ring at the top of the oil cooler. I've changed many hundreds of them. It's a TSB. It's a 4.9 quart engine. P0420 on a 2.5L Altima is usually a cracked weld on the cat. At Nissan, we replace the cat. At my shop, we usually re-weld it.

Unless you have an 2002 like I did and get the fortune of misfire codes because your head gasket went and coolant is filling in your cylinders, all because your precat failed. What a money pit of a car. Cured me of ever wanting to buy a Nissan again.

What is it with you guys and the $ value of the car? If you need transport and your vehicle provides it, there's the value right there! Just because the car in question doesn't provide things like in flight service or back massage while distracting the driver from actually keeping the car within the lines of his/her lane while getting you to where you need to be, it doesn't mean it's any less valuable to the owner than your $200.000 super pose-mobile. Its not all about money! Having said that, not maintaining things like noisy wheel bearings comes back to bite you when you get stranded on the freeway with a collapsed wheel hub, but that can happen to any vehicle.

I'm glad someone else made the same observation, although I've always been torn whether Nissan or Mitsubishi deserves the title, "Chrysler of Japan." Mitsubishi, after all, did partner with Chrysler for many years, sharing platforms and drivetrains, even the Diamond Star Motors venture.

Mitsubishi is the Chrysler of Japan. So much that early to mid 70's Mitsubishis had Chrysler badges on them here in Australia, until Mitsubishi took over the local Chrysler factory.

Auto repair at it's best and most creative. Putting the air filter back would have given me nightmares and a Motorcraft oil filter, I don't think that was factory that was how you say different and a little out of spec. LOL Thanks for sharing

Ray, I understand that you know full well that this car will be back in a month at most on the end of a tow truck with the right front wheel in the trunk. At that point, the total damage will be at least 3X the cost of a wheel bearing replacement.

They never had one shatter on you. I did when I was 16 on a Lincoln mark iv. U want scary that was scary. New bearings didn’t work cause the spindle was worn from non repair. They wouldn’t seat properly the lines on the spindle were worn off on the top

to be fair, some jobs I am willing to tackle myself, so if I go into my shop for a new tyre, and they try and sell me a complete brake job and replace the front swinging arms for like £750, I may have to either wait for my next paycheck to be able to afford that, or, I might want to do it myself, in this instance I priced the parts (to me, - i know the garages get a better deal on the costs) was $500, so the choice will be do it myself or pay someone £250 to do it for me. I had the tyre done, the rest will get done soon, a lot depends on how I feel and the weather (streetside mechanics)

@@Chris-hw4mq most quick lube joints check and offer to replace the air filter when they change the oil. The owner is probably just used to that. He likely would have gone through one of the fast lube places if he didn't want the tire balanced.
