If you’re new to Kpop, XG is a great group to start with, as all of their lyrics are in English! Hopefully my reactions will provide some guidance as to where to start exploring their discography.

i wish x-gene was longer!! it's literally so good and i'll never get over it, tippy toes and tgif. so happy i've finally found another alphaz, lol! the only thing wrong with xg is that they just don't have enough songs. also you are hilarious! ranking videos usually lose my attention but i watched this one the whole way through. so entertaining

Thank you so much! When I was pulling together this video and realized they only had 11 tracks total for me to rank, I was genuinely shocked and assumed I must have been forgetting something, but no. We're heavily spoiled by the content release schedules pushed by other labels with more financial backing. I know XG is set to do a world tour in 2024 (still crossing fingers SO hard for a Denver date) so it's hard to imagine they'll be increasing their rate of content releases anytime soon, but I would love to be wrong!

Putting New Dance so low on the list really did hurt. This was so hard. 😭 It's a great song. I tried to explain my rationale as best I could but it was inevitable some of my selections would be controversial.

@@hien7879 Now that you mention it, I'm gonna go back and add in a link to that it's Live ep in the description because it's seriously transcendental and I want to encourage people to check it out. Their voices are just so crystalline and pure. When they layer them together in multi-part harmonies, it's like audible velvet. Glad you enjoyed it as well! Per the audio, honest opinion, does it sound reasonably conversational? I record the narration one sentence at a time, usually with multiple takes, and am curious whether that's obvious to outside listeners.

@@overthinkingkpop ohhh interesting, i think i can sometimes tell parts are recorded separately, but not always, and i think the way you record them still flow quite naturally, so it doesn't feel that jarring to me even when i notice. In fact, if you really record all sentences separately, i think i didnt notice for the majority of the cut haha.

@@hien7879 There are also some parts where I recorded things out of order, such as right at the beginning of the video when I swiped a sample from much later in the episode for a cold open, that I think are more noticeable. I have a feeling the audio quality consistency is what I'll judge most harshly when I look back on these early videos later down the line. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually. Either way, thanks for the feedback!

Same here when my ktube friend named kortie put x-gene into her top fav kpop songs of 2023 i was floored with the sneak peak so i was excited to see more of it! Until i released that the song is shorter than i thought lolol eh its still number 1 in my heart lolol

Thank you 🖤 He lived a good, long life and was so deeply cherished. They gave him 4-6 weeks before the pandemic started and then he hung on for another four years. What a little fucking champion. 🖤

X-Gene definitely deserved to be longer, it’s insanely good. And my top is definitely Winter Without You. Everything about the song gave me 90s RnB vibes (and I love me some old school music). And I love how this song really showcased Maya and her vocal abilities (which she deserves more recognition, she is the hidden ace in the group).

It's so beautiful... it's just also so heartwrenching 🥺 I feel the same way about "Either Way" from IVE. I can't handle the tearjerkers. Watching other people cry-- particularly idols I'm really fond of, such as XG and IVE-- instantly turns on the waterworks for me. I'm such a sap. 😭

XG has absolutely no misses😍😍 just one thing, "heso-nooh" sounds hella cute but the original pronunciation is "he-so-no-oh" 😁 it means "umbilical cord" in japanese, but the girls use the word to symbolize their strong relationship and connection with each other, just like sisters!

I really enjoyed your thoughtful and insightful ranking. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you for sharing it with us! I really like how you pointed out that Hesonoo and X-Gene are "ambient" tracks. I never thought of that. I was also curious as to why GRL GVNG only had half of a music video, but your explanation that they ran out of money made sense. The word "Lavish" also stood out to me as being a possible alternate name for Shooting Star. I find XG music so interesting and I love the production behind the instrumentals/beats. I personally find Puppet Show to be so fresh sounding. In my opinion, they released it last because it is intended to be the "best" offering, musically, of New DNA. But all the tracks are great and of such high quality. I cannot wait to see the new collection of songs that XGALX and XG cook up this year. We all look forward to your thoughts as well.

It's 'heso' (臍, belly) no o (の緒, cord of), 'cord of the belly', or umbilical cord. Symbolising the connection the girls've built thru their training years to debut as XG.

First of all, your commentary is gold: informative and hilarious. My favorite songs of XG right now are Left Right (I love singing this song and it brings me good memories of when I constantly listened to it during my commute to my college(?), not sure of what is the English equivalent of it😅) and TGIF (Super fun song). For a song ranking, maybe ATEEZ? But if it's too long, you could do only their title tracks, it would more manageable. I've been watching a lot of ranking songs videos lately, so I would be down to watch any artist ranking that you want (and as a plus, I get reccomendations) Have a great day!

My old man was with me for more than half of my life thus far. It's so quiet and lonely without him around. I'm glad he isn't suffering anymore, though. His last few years were pretty uncomfortable and he bounced back from the brink multiple times before we finally decided it was time to let him go. If you end up deciding it's time to let her go because her quality of life has deteriorated, I cannot possibly say enough good things about at-home euthanasia. A veterinarian came to our home and performed the procedure in an environment where he felt completely at ease, so that his last moments were not in any way stressful or scary. He got to go out via a fast-acting, painless cocktail of ketamine, benzos, opiates, and barbiturates while surrounded by the ones who loved him the most. It was a death I would want for myself. I had so many reservations going into it, but now that it has happened, I can see it as the kindness that it truly was. To celebrate his memory, I commissioned a portrait of him from an artist friend of mine and also added a stuffy to my collection that looks like him so that I can give him a snuggle anytime I really miss him. Both mementos have brought me so much comfort already. Wishing you many happy days to come with your girlie. Cherish her as hard as you can while it's still possible. 💖

Metallica was my first favorite band ever, starting when I was 12. They played a pivotal role in my development as an audiophile. 💖 My journey from metalhead to stan has been quite an adventure but they'll always hold a special place in my heart.

I think xg is categorized as a global girl group? At least that's what I've heard when people complain about them being in videos of kpop lol everyone says they're not kpop but it's confusing because they're Japanese, perform on Korean music shows and sing in English so I'm constantly confused about them lmao

I stand to reason that anti-Japanese xenophobia is one of the biggest factors behind the gatekeeping as to whether they count as Kpop. That historical precedence is honestly worth an episode of its own someday. I'll add it to my ever-growing list of ideas lol. Either way, as a counterpoint, let's pretend that the Spice Girls were still performing together. I would consider them the epitome of a "global girl group." Do you think they'd be invited to perform on inkigayo and Music Bank? Somehow I have my doubts. The fact that XG is based in Korea and performs on Korean music shows is enough for me to count them as Kpop. Lyrics in Korean aren't required for other Kpop artists, either, nor is a Korean ethnic background. I'd count BLACKPINK as a global girl group, too, but they're very much still Kpop, y'know?

@@overthinkingkpop Even then I still have to disagree, because I don't think music shows should be your only argument because that leaves you open to a lot of criticism. Personally, I feel like XG is a global group using the kpop formula, which is a seperate from kpop itself. Them and Blackpink are honestly on that line of crossing over, it's very hard to say. But personally, I feel like the main thing that seperates the two is Blackpink has a couple of lines in Korean and has a lot of Korean culture in their mv's like the How You Like That hanboks. XG is missing that K(orean) in their pop. That one thing to push them into kpop, they sing in english, their company isn't a Korean training company... and their CEO's anti-Korean comments don't help. Basically confirming that they're using kpop and the kpop formula for their own gain, and it worked but I don't think they should be called kpop. XG is very close to be labeled as kpop, but to say they perform on music shows is just so vague because there have been many global artists to perform on music shows... so would they be kpop too and for groups who don't perform on music stages, does that mean they AREN'T kpop? I just think the kpop definition should focus on the k(orean) in kpop

I'm not here listening to Kpop because it's in Korean, from Korea, or made by Koreans; I'm listening to it because I like the music, and I'm recommending it because others might as well. If you don't want them to sit at your table, it doesn't change the fact that they'll still be welcome at MNET's.

Literally idc about anything else, they can continue going to music shows. They can go to MAMA... it's smart business moves but they still doesn't change the fact they aren't kpop. You can recommend them all you want and did I try to stop you in my initial comment? Literally no. I loved the video and would love to see you release more high quality videos because this one was really good. XG could even come to the metaphorical table but as an alternate, you know. Someone who obviously has experience and participates and has their foot in the door, but still hasn't stepped through that metaphorical door. But they literally are THAT CLOSE. The reason why I'm getting so... intense about this. Is because kpop fans like to throw around words to the point where they lose their meaning / don't understand the definition. I see this less as gatekeeping, and more so defining what Kpop is. What makes one group kpop, while another group is just using the kpop formula. Definitions don't (/shouldn/t) gatekeep, they just are. (I really want to get a definition out there because XG is just the beginning, especially when companies are trying to make global groups now like Vcha and Katseye, especially the upcoming NCT Tokyo)

@@randomkid4783 "their CEO's anti-Korean comments don't help." Problem with that is that wasn't their CEO. Max Matsuura was the CEO of Avex, which is the "Parent Company". XG is under XGALX which the CEO is Simon Jakops. As far as Avex, Max Matsuura isn't even the CEO anymore, Katsumi Kuroiwa is the current Avex CEO.

This is your commentary and we are all entitled to our opinions. . .. I can see that you are not into R&B, but you made salient points though on each song . . the only opinion of yours which I don’t agree is that you still maintain that XG is a Kpop group. .. . XG does not merit that category solely because they promote in Korea and do shows in Korean TV shows . . My opinion if I may, XG’s music style and vibe is different from Kpop girl groups, which is why I will not put them in that category . .

You are definitely not wrong that R&B isn't my favorite genre, haha, but I think XG do R&B better than a lot of groups out there and I do genuinely enjoy those songs, even if they don't top my list. I listened almost exclusively to trap and other flavors of EDM before discovering Kpop, so it should come as no surprise that I am more drawn to songs that embrace those sounds. You are, of course, completely entitled to the opinion that XG doesn't qualify as Kpop. I will readily acknowledge that they're right on the borderline. I consider the music show system to be one of the fundamental defining features of Kpop, though, so their inclusion on those programs is enough to push me into the camp that they are, indeed, Kpop. Also, though, I think gatekeeping genre delineation serves no one. All I give a shit about is whether I like the music.

loved your explanations and honestly agreed with a lot!! criminal offense that grl gvng was robbed of a full mv but they rlly put their whole back into it nonetheless. im so excited for all the bangers we get to look forward to! i also thought it would be fun to give my own take but i hope no one takes this the wrong way. its just my own opinion of ranking 1. left right 2. grl gvng 3. x-gene 4. shooting star 5. winter without you 6. new dance 7. puppet show 8. tgif 9. tippy toes 10. mascara they rlly didnt miss with any of their songs and although i too didnt love tippy toes and mascara when i first heard them, they did grow on me and are in rotation. its tough though bc theres soooo many angles you could take, like replay-ability or just personal preference! we all agree though, no bad songs
