Rattlesnake Hunt 2018 Pa. Follow John Royer and friends as they head to north central Pennsylvania as they hunt for timber rattlesnakes during the opening day of the venomous snake season. The guys find around 40 snakes on opening day in with only one snake tagged. Saw many legal snakes along with great views and other wildlife.

As an American Hunter/Fisherman, I really enjoy these videos! I had no idea that Rattlers got that big outside of the state of Texas! ;) Its easy to see why Settlers cleared them out whenever they came across them! We have rattle snakes where I live, mostly in the sage brush and scab rock country although, I have come across timber rattlers up north in mountainous areas that are much larger. We have "Bull Snakes" here that are similar to the rattler in pattern, but different enough that its easy to tell them apart. A few years ago, I caught one that I came across while out scouting some country, a huge 7 to 8 foot long Bull Snake! My Uncle would tell stories of those large bull snakes when I was a kid, but I remained skeptical all through my life until I actually got to see this big one that I mention. I let it go back to what it was doing after I examined it for a while. I was surprised at how docile a snake that size is, because the smaller bull snakes can be quite lively to handle!

Mike Magnum Are you in Texas? I'm just west of San Antonio. I wish rattlers were that easy to find down here but with over 100 days of 100+ degree heat, they don't come out until night where you can find them on the roads.

Very few people actually spend time in the mts year round, if they do its usually on a trail or near, a camp, park ect.. But if you actually hike in and spend time in the mts, then you will soon learn about the animals, and birds and reptiles that live there. Rattlesnakes included. Sadly many of our modern hunting pursuits do not include, putting good old fashioned boot leather to the ground and spending time scouting and learning our wild public places. PA has millions of acres of public land. Rattlesnakes are to be respected. Their presence is a part of our PA wilds every bit as much as native brook trout, the whisper of the wind through a white pine, and standing atop a mt at sunrise and gazing across seemingly endless mts, that go on forever. Nice video, good to see others enjoying our PA wilds.

It's not all of PA, only certain places especially in the north. Plus, there is very little danger of a snakebite. They want to encounter you less than you want to encounter them. The number one killer in PA is bees/wasps. Dog attacks, rabies, mosquitos and even car accidents caused by deer all kill way more Pennsylvanians than snakes do. We've had one fatality in the last 30 years from a rattlesnake bite.

How do you get the snakes in the tubes? I've lived in Pa. my entire life. I've spent so much time in the woods of upstate and never have come across a rattlesnake or a copperhead. Never heard a rattle or anything. On our mountain we aren't supposed to have them. The next mountain over they are supposed to be there. I've covered a lot of ground and would really like to see one. I'll keep my distance that's for sure.

Great videos and very impressed. I do have a question? What makes you guys so confident that you won’t be bitten? Snake boots up to the knee and some wearing shorts. Your snake hunting in tall weeds climbing over rocks they can be anywhere. I personally would want protection up to my hip or more. So be it if it’s Hot! How do you feel about this???
@Leatherwoodoutdoors
@Leatherwoodoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
we have been doing this for many many years. snakes rarely strike higher than the ankle so when its super hot out it keeps us cool. Some of us have chaps that go up to the hip but rarely used and most of the time they are used for brush pants than for snake proofing. rarely do they strike unless provoked. Its the handling part with your hands where you must be more careful.

We are in North Central Pa. We would love to bring everyone with us but its just not possible to take everyone, sorry. We mostly only hunt with close friends and family when we do go. There are more and more people getting into snake hunting, even the observing part because most never realized they are in Pa. You have some snakes down your way in somerset and if Daniel Thomas is inviting you, that is a good start since you are close to home.

Leatherwood Outdoors thank you guys! I knew we had rattlesnakes in PA. I've just never observed people hunting them. I probably wouldn't hunt them anyway. I like snakes. I also had no clue how big this kind of hunting actually was. I was under the impression that no one really did it anymore. Anyway, have an excellent season and I can't wait to see some fall hunting videos!

So they release them? What is the point of the "hunt"? Just for info purpose? Great video, cant believe how many there are! I will stay out of PA
@Leatherwoodoutdoors
@Leatherwoodoutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
We are allowed one snake per year. We released many because we are looking for extra big snakes to tag out one. Some will keep a snake at the bare minimum of the legal requirments and some look for a snake of a lifetime which means letting many go.

I'm going to the Sinnemahoning hunt and the Cross Forks Hunt this year - first time. I never even saw a rattlesnake in the woods all my life. I got Irish Setter snake boots, Cabela's snakes chaps, and 2 pairs of snakes tongs, 52" and 60" long, Got burlap sacks and found an old snake bite kit in an abandoned camp. Where do you get those tubes at ? Can somebody help me with that ?
@Leatherwoodoutdoors
@Leatherwoodoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
look for florescent light tubes at lowes.
@patrickjohnson1457
@patrickjohnson1457 5 жыл бұрын
I bought an 8 ft long T-12 light protector tube at Lowes. It's only like 1-1/2" diameter. So a rattlesnake's head will fit up in there ?
@Leatherwoodoutdoors
@Leatherwoodoutdoors 5 жыл бұрын
@@patrickjohnson1457 yes, we cut them to the length we want. the snakes head will go up in but on really big snakes it will only go a short ways. watch through most of our videos and see how different sized snakes fit in the tubes. we never try to tube snakes that are under 36".

this year we could have, but most of the guys are not out to kill. its to the point now, that it has to be something bigger than normal to tag out. Usually one over 50"
