Ray Shoesmith ‘takes care of people’ - collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns, and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate others disregarding his very clear code of ethics. As Ray’s increasingly volatile work collides with his imploding personal life, he finds himself struggling to stay atop the complex web he has woven.

Agreed. He's very judgemental and letting his own personal beliefs effect his work interactions. I've worked in mental health and I can assure you this behaviour is a good way to get your head kicked in. I've also seen staff who treated the patients with respect and kindness have their lives saved by patients. Being a petty little tyrant in these situations isn't good for your health!

Na, the counselor was in no danger. Sarcastic and whiny isn't enough to rouse that man's ire. And Ray metes it out with wisdom. Something I think a lot of people don't realize is they aren't wise, and in no position to use authority to resolve a conflict, Not like Ray.

Discipline and punishment should start in the home, but yeah, the governmental overreach into the family unit has limited the ability to correct bad behavior. "A child that disrespects his parents won't respect anyone." Billy Graham. A switch across the legs and a belt across the back will change a mind if applied early and consistently enough. The price to society later, in lieu of that, is much greater. As witnessed by anyone paying attention RIGHT NOW.

One of my favorite TV shows in recent years. Brilliant and captivating. I bought the first 2 seasons on DVD but unfortunately the 3rd season has not been released and maybe never will be. And I still am unable to track down a DVD of The Magician (he makes people disappear), Scott Ryan's first foray into the "magic" of Ray Shoesmith in a separate short movie. BTW Scott seems to be channeling aspects of Mark "Chopper" Read's persona in his depiction of Shoesmith. He certainly has the attitude of Read, and the certitude that he has a kind of philosophy to back it up. Great show - entertaining, funny and of course gut wrenching.
