Real Families

6 жыл бұрын

After a very emotional week, it’s the final day of the week. Has Tanya met her targets for the families? There are lots of tears on the final day. And when they go back home, will they manage to build on the progress they’ve made so far? In all cases - the answer is a resounding yes. The Cooksleys are thrilled that Lewis is eating a roast dinner, and they are learning not to baby him, the Turners’ daughters are behaving well and not throwing tantrums. The quality of the families’ relationship has improved leaps and bounds. And Nicola has her bed back to herself. Dante is going to sleep by himself in his very own bed, and sleeping through the night.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman guides the audience through a week-long journey at TV’s first ever child and parent behaviour refuge.
During their stay at the House of Tiny Tearaways, three families live together, while child psychologist Dr Tanya Byron works with both parents and children to solve issues around fussy eating, sleeping habits, and public tantrums - and she'll challenge the parents to get to the root of the problems they're experiencing raising their children.
With Dr Tanya Byron's help and advice, the hope is that the families will learn useful pedagogy techniques and gain new insights, giving them long-lasting support though the parenting challenges they're facing.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

Hanna and Jessica's Dad had an epiphany when he was there! I have never seen someone come round so quickly. He needed to own his girls' behaviour but he needed to own his own problems first...and he did! The lovely young Hannah is in at Uni now and Jess is in the 6th form. Their parents are still together and they're a happy loving family! If these were the only people that you helped it was worth it. It only takes one person to change the world. It was really inspiring. Thank you so much to those who participated. You're all really brave and obviously love your children very much or you wouldn't be there! You've got to name it to claim it. Dr. Tanya is a wonderful teacher. She's very honest/realistic/sensible and very compassionate.

But he shouldn’t have been wiping her tears! It wasn’t at all healthy for him to always be watching her upset and crying. He needed a mature, happy, together mother who was there to comfort and motivate him, not the other way around. In their relationship, she was the child and he was the adult. As Tanya told her, enough with the tears already. She was so immature and over emotional.

This should be required for all new parents when they need it. Set up a bunch of these homes and we can fix up society. I do think a huge part of crimes these days is due to parents not having the money to take their kids places. Kids need things like sports, amusement parks, animals, summer camps, cookouts, swimming lessons, etc. These things cost money nowadays and a lot of parents don't have it and a lot of people grow up in ugly homes through no fault of their own. Beauty in life matters for mental health and kids who grow up in cities, well, I can see why there are more mental health problems where people are not in Nature and rarely leave their neighborhoods. Zip code at birth CAN matter in how people turn out. z

My father was a problem child on the verge of turning into a delinquent at age 14. My grandfather took the aggressive step of making a little cabin in the wilderness to get his son out of the city. As a result of that, me, the oldest of his seven grandchildren, and my cousins grew up as close as siblings. Whenever we weren't required in the city for work/school we were out in the little cabin being outside, swimming, enjoying nature and learning life and survival skills in the woods. We had an idyllic childhood that we were able to pass on to our children and the next generation is just being born now. Fast forward 70 years and we were looking for a charity to support in memory of my parents. We found a lovely little farm outside the city that provides access to horses, pets and wildlife for kids at risk in the inner city. We've introduced them to a group that takes care of inner-city kids. It has been a perfect match. Children don't need a disability, diagnosis, or problems with the law, their socio-economic situation doesn't matter, they only need to be a child that could benefit from some time out of the inner-city and an opportunity to engage with nature and all its' forms via a nomination from a teacher. As @Jae Lynn mentioned, all children need access to nature and I'm so glad to be part of a system that ensures more kids have access to these opportunities.

@@suestoons Yes, it’s called a background of experiences. We are the sum of our experiences. Kids can only relate to and grow based on what they know. That’s why people grow so much from travel, seeing different places and cultures. I made sure my kids had all the experiences that I could afford. I sent them to camps and on teen tours all over the country. They both went to Israel as teens. We traveled as a family, went skiing out west every yr. We were very lucky in that we could afford to give them these experiences.

Dr. Byron was so concerned about the future of the Turner’s little girls regarding their parents being negative toward them. Nobody mentioned the future for Lewis who expects to be praised for every move he makes. It will be a big shock to that little boy when he has to live in the real world where he’ll be nobody special. BTW, I wouldn’t want to eat the pizza which Lewis’s snotty nose was dripping into.

My uncle made a very clear point of what Dante's mom was told. My cousin did something, can't really remember what, but something my uncle told him not to do. Instead of putting him in timeout or taking things away from him, my uncle simply said " Quinn, it really hurt my feelings that you did that after I told you not to." My uncle proceeded to have a hurt look on his face for the rest of the day, and Quinn hasn't done anything like that again. it s sad that it comes to hurting a child's feelings to get them to act appropriately, but isn't that what happens no matter what age you are if someone acts a fool?

I don’t personally feel this little guy has a true food phobia but more of a learned issue from mom being ocd with him getting messy and messes in general and then control issues. He controls meal times. He only wants puréed foods yet he is willing to chew crisps? Those are to totally separated ends of the spectrum. Mom would feed him the puréed food but he would feed himself crisps because they didn’t leave him messy. I think he would eat more real food if they quite doing 1 bite of food=1 crisp. Require more food then a couple crisps not the entire bag. He has shown he likes real food but is still in control with the crisps🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ this is my own opinion. I hope these parents keep going with what they have learned it things continue to improve for them and their children ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I just found out not everyones pediatrician hands out a little book of developmental milestones to every parent. Guess we were lucky. It was really fun and interesting to see some of the behaviors (like laughing and standing) happen exactly when the book said. Of course you have to balance your emotions and not overreact when the child is a bit behind in some arbitrary skill. And uh .. you only have to watch 1 episode of Dora to get the gist of how kids play. Just ... use your indoor voice Dora, please.

And when her friend came in the room, she threw herself on the floor ...rolling around and freaking out. Tanya had to tell her to get up and keep it together. She also admitted that her son is always having to wipe her tears. Like this clip where he looks worried and scared for her. Her confrontational scruff against Louise was ridiculous too.

I agree - one of two things can happen a) Dante can become so cold to his mother's overreactions that he won't recognize when she may really need comfort, or b) he made end up subconsciously seeking over-the-top dramatic women as an adult and end up in a miserable marriage
@theyliveyousleep4460

That's very likely. Kids learn/copy everything from their parents. When a parent is immature and unstable, the child will be too. Kids usually externalize those traits differently. The kids in this show lack discipline and their parents treat them like friends. But it's a whole other level when a child becomes the "rock" and tear-wiper for the mother. The whole "my little man" mentality is very unfair to the child. Let him grow up and become a man before using his shoulder to cry on. Because eventually, all children need the support and advice of their older and (hopefully) wiser parent. What are the chances little Dante is going to seek out his mother's guidance...when his mother can't keep herself together? And IF he does, what are the chances she is able to support him...and that he actually listens to her? How is he going to respect or follow the guidance of a parent who swirls around in drama, negativity and victimhood? Parenting is a learned skill. Tanya learned her skills in school too. So it's quite surprising that Tanya didn't address this issue with Nicola...and with all the families too. Establishing clear relationship roles is an easy enough thing to do...yet it's critical for healthy relationships including the structure of the family unit . .
@jaelynn7575

We don't know her whole life though and I think it's unfair to judge. I find that humans are so quick to judge others rather than realize we ALL make mistakes, all the time, and often don't even know it b/c it can depend on who you are talking to. When I meet someone, one of the first things I ask are, "what are your biggest pet peeves? What really bothers you about other people." That way you know what triggers to avoid with people to keep conflicts low. You have to accept "the good" with "the bad" in everyone and it takes work. However, some of "the bad," IS unacceptable and you can either address it directly and hope to resolve it, you can just accept it even though you shouldn't, or you can decide that a person is too different and it's better off going separate ways. I have a lot of experience in life and these are just my two cents. It's better to forgive b/c that's what you would want from others when you mess up, eh? The Golden Rule. I say this as a person who also likes things done a certain way, i.e.control, and luckily I haven't made any HUGE mistakes in life. Life went as planned for me, until I got sick, which is TRULY unfair. Now I have a useless college education! Thanks for reading!

I prefer that as I've known too many people who like to have their home immaculate all the time but that is exhausting because you have to be able to enjoy your home and relax in it. I’m terrible with grand children and probably with great grand child. Our daughter lived with us with the grandchild with her own child. Both our daughter’s children were the best kids. The boy is 14 with prayer and structure he will do great. His father was killed in a accident when he was 6. He has really into such a nice young man. 6ft 2 in at that age. Dad was 6ft 6in. We have been blessed. I wish them all the best! They did great!

One day these kids will look back at this and have a whole 6 episodes to see what their parents have done for them and just how much they love them to go through such a journey in such a great house.

I did think that Nikola was doing some acting when she told Dr. Tanya she told Dante to leave her alone and go away. She was the only parent in the house that we didn't see any outburst from at any time. I think Louise hit the nail on the head during their argument in that she said all of Nikola's time was spent with a 2 yo. Not having any interactions outside of her son I believe has left Nikola starved for attention and that's why she acted that way in the house. Very much "look at me"

The adults & therapist should have the children sit still & critique their poor behavior by watching a video of themselves. Then ask the kids what they think about it & how to make it better.

I love this program too. Would you believe that this was filmed in 2005 which means all these kids are teenagers now. I'd love to know how they are all doing. Lewis (he and his family were my favourites), with the eating habit, would be all of 16 years old now... crazy!!

Parenting...like everything else in this world...is a learned skill. The psychologist in this program had to go to school to learn skills too. And these parents are taking action to help their families. That makes them good parents.

You're right some people shouldn't be parents but that doesn't apply to the 3 families in the house. The fact that they asked for help and were willing to try anything to make improvements proves what loving parents they are.
