Everyone else in the Fellowship we got to know along the way in the next movie as they traveled together for the most part.

I think the issue regarding Zack Snyder is that he is at his best when he is surrounded by the right people who can keep him in check and cover his weak spots. It's when he is given complete creative control when disaster strikes. Let's face it, Man if Steel would have been much worse if Nolan and Goyer weren't around to keep an eye on him.

Glad to see a reviewer who can provide constructive criticism that helps viewers understand what the flaws of the movie are rather than the very lazy "This movie sucks...." and go on a tirade about how much they hate it but do little or nothing to elaborate on it except to use some very generic phrases they have used in all their previous reviews. Rebel moon is incredibly easy to fix : Step 1) Make it a TV show instead of a movie to better explore the world and characters. I didn't really feel like I was a part of this world or that I understood how it works. The world of Rebel moon has potential but right now it just seems generic it's not as special or unique as Dune or star wars. No world building lore has been established Step 2) Use a much slower pacing to develop the characters and set up the group dynamics. I keep struggling to remember these characters names because there so forgettable. Yeah there interesting but not that memorial or relatable because the movie won't slow down to give them a moment of characterisation. They don't have any unique individual personalities and they have no group dynamic or chemistry.

The problem is the average consumers don’t have the attention span for that to be done. Especially in a world where 2 entire generations (Gen Z and Gen Alpha) have drastically reduced attention spans due to the popularization of apps like tik tok that are made to entertain the simple minded. So now to sell a product, you have to play by a certain set of invisible rules if you want the numbers, the two most important of those rules being that you need to entertain people fast and often. You saw this trend really come in to play after the success Marvel had following that formula. Rebel Moon has been #1 on Netflix since the night it was put on and it’s still currently #1, and will likely stay there for at least another week (which is longer than it sounds considering how fast Netflix content goes up in views per day for movies in the #1 spot) So people can write all the reviews they want, but it’s selling and that ultimately takes precedent with how much money goes in to these projects. I’m not saying I wouldn’t enjoy this as a series instead of a movie, and I agree world building is what would improve the show, but I don’t see that happening given the short attention spans of everyone below 30 in todays society. Look at Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, even as TV shows, HBO is constantly forcing their writers to condense the story in to as much on screen action as possible to the point characters started to teleport around the realm within the same episode, and we all know how high the views and ratings were for House of the Dragon. They already have a set amount of episode and seasons planned and are just forcing their writers to make it work, there’s also a trend of maximizing profits and reducing spending costs by removing large battles and replacing them with smaller fights that never take place in the original material.

Plus I don't agree with the OP's criticism about the Sam and JC scene at the lake at all, he says it doesn't do anything for the plot which is a two part disagreement - not everything has to exist to drive plot forward, and two, the scene provided core motivation for him to care to come back and save Sam, breaking a long held protocol for him. No one would care for the bot to come out of nowhere and break his oath for someone he didn't know, it would have been a case of "oh this bot who was constantly punched down cuz he couldn't fight back finally fights back at the right time", but it gave a personal motivation, which compounds over the necessary unconditional good of saving someone in that situation when able.

Dawn of the Dead was okay. 300 was probably his best movie and that was mostly slo-mo and action. Watchmen wasn't bad but it's mostly just ripped straight from the comics. Sucker Punch made no fucking sense. Man of Steel didn't understand the characters of Ma, Pa and Clark Kent. BVS: Still didn't understand Clark Kent and then got Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne all fucking wrong. Justice League(Synder Cut) was the better version but didn't need a 4 hour run time. Army of the Dead had a cool, interesting take on zombies and giving them a hierarchy but the overall premise was shit and had so many fucking plot holes and stupid characters. I agree with Gunnar being given the protagonist role. He is almost a non-presence in the Rebel Moon. But he could have fulfilled a very important role and balanced out the rest perfectly while growing as a character. - He could have been shown as an idealist at heart, and a generally kind and sympathetic man. He sold the leftover grain to the rebels, despite the risk, not only to feed his village but also because he sympathized with their cause. He wants to believe in a better future. He isn't a fighter, but he is human. Now, put him in the group of dangerous and skilled people who, despite their strength and abilities, lost themselves after clashing with the Motherworld. (now, below are my thoughts on how the rest of the cast COULD HAVE BEEN written, not how they were shown) - Kora, a renegade elite soldier. Make her struggle with being a good person, a different person. All she knows is how to kill. She is a weapon to be pointed at the enemy. She was good at it. She was proud of it. She still is - when she fights, a part of her comes alive. It feels right. This is what she was made for...right? She avoids conflict not because she secretly hates to kill again, but because she forces herself to go away from the old ways, keeps convincing herself that there are other options for her, that there is a reason the locals spared her and nursed her back to health after finding her in the wreckage. At the same time, she questioned herself: Are there truly any options? Or is she just a weapon gone berserk, turned against the empire that made her? - Nemesis, a grieving mother who cut out her weaknesses and replaced them with cybernetic components. She is calm, cold, and silent. She is obsessed with justice and vengeance - she no longer feels pain and tells herself nothing is holding her back on her path. She binds herself with her code of honor because deep inside, she is still hurting and furious, and she has to be sure she doesn't become what she hates on her quest for vengeance. She is the figurative Tin Man, who tries not to feel her heart but still needs it - to remind herself why she is doing all that. She believes she failed as a protector, so now she must destroy. - Tarak, a nobleman who lost his home and was stranded away in a world where the person's life and dignity are currency. He is so great at bonding with animals, because he believes them to be better and more worthy of his care and trust than so-called sentient beings. Animal minds and loyalties are simpler and more honest. He would willingly place himself in chains he can easily break to free a wild beast from her cage and help her eviscerate her captors, but he feels distant from the pains of humans and such -- they inflict pain upon each other all the time it seems they want it that way. He can no longer bring himself to care. - Titus, a former general. The man who orchestrated massacres, and purges, and genocides, believing it was all for the greater good. The man who had to face the truth and now drowns himself in blood and alcohol because of self-loathing. He hates the Motherwolrd as it was and he hates it as it now, and overall, he hates himself. He could be a dangerous weapon against the Motherwold -- if only he could tell himself, what will he fight for, now that everything he used to believe in turned out to be a bunch of pretty lies? Basically, placing Gunnar in such company would have added a much-needed human element and perspective. Gunnar has something to lose and something he viscerally wants to protect. Gunnar sees the shadows of what these dangerous people used to be - and he speaks to them. He empathizes with them, he understands their loss. He acknowledges Kora's struggle. He mourns for Nemesis' loss. He encourages Tarak to share stories he remembers about his place. He argues with Titus - angrily standing his ground and admonishing him for his bruised ego, making Titus slowly realize that while redemption isn't what he deserves, he can at least undo some of his mistakes. Meanwhile, the others see his desperation and willingness to face the dangers and even protect others (despite not being very skilled in fighting and literally risking his neck in every encounter), and it astounds them. Gunnar isn't afraid to die if it means saving his home and his people. He would throw himself into war with the Motherworld because what else did he have to lose? By being human in his interactions, his protectiveness, and his hopefulness, he reminds this group of unlikely companions about something they almost forgot. He may not be their official leader (at least initially), but he ends up being their motivator, giving them bits of his soul back and giving them a greater purpose.

some of the visuals are good. I kept thinking of more a seven samurai movie with elements of Star Wars in it. I think the Neo, modern human is the problem. Spending the majority of our life more hyper sentient of our own mortality than ever before, has made everyone, all the time worried about not getting what they "need" before they die.... It makes them sad and hate on everything. The smarter we think we get, the more entitled we become, until we realize we'll never get everything before we are dead, and so we are constantly on an emotional roller coaster of fear, loss, and death. Life can show us beauty, and we momentarily appreciate it, and then we remember we will die and become sad and angry again. Then we watch Rebel Moon, or anything too wonderous, we desperately lash out, like confused chimpanzee's. It's no ones fault we are advanced enough to understand that we will eventually die, but not advanced enough to be immortal, (yet). For the time being the solution is to embrace death, and appreciate creativity and differences with love and tolerance. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good life.

I like to start by saying I am not a grammar wizard. I am only responding to express my opinion on the film and the comments expressed in this video. I wholeheartedly agree with you on: - Character development being mostly nonexistent. I feel this has been a problem with many movies in the last decade. - I feel Gunnar would have been a better protagonist over Kora. Again this could of been done through character development. For example, After covering more background on Kora and her deserting the empire. We can have Gunnar save Kora from some kind of farming accident. Then we have Gunnar intervene in the stables. At this point Kora is running away again and heads to the stables to retrieve a mount. She observes Gunnar being beaten and ready to be executed. She then intervenes because he saved her earlier "Life Debt". - They rushed the rebel team together to quickly. There should of been more side adventures like needing to repair/refuel that leads to gaining a new companion. - No story arcs for the main characters. I disagree with you on: - The LIGHTSABER reference when you refer to Bae Doona. The blades were not an energy sword but heated by her gauntlets. Even if they were an energy blade Isaac Asimov wrote about them in 1944. As for flaming blades you can go back to Genesis 3:24. I don't see this as any kind of RIP. - I feel some of your unneeded scenes references are a nice "polish" to a movie. While others should of had more story that led up to them. - Your reference to food and a ship able to warp. Those are two different technologies to start and if your a militaristic civilization why research agriculture when you WARP to a planet and just refill your food stores. To me it feels like they just take what they need and placed most of their research in weaponry. A lead to the rebels whereabouts led them to that area. They warp there demand crops capping off their food stores and taking so much depriving the chance of the rebels being able to get any themselves. - Comparing how a few heroes are going to take on an army of millions. I have no clue where this opinion even developed. You are not going to send millions after a small group to start, it's a waste of resources. Those millions you talk about are most likely spread out among the planets. Second, it's easier to infiltrate and sabotage as a small group i.e. Death Star or Rogue One. Third, the way part one ended our heroes are unaware that Noble survived and Balisarius is now aware that Kora is alive. The heroes think they have time to devise a plan and gather allies. The Bottom Line: - I can put almost any movie under a microscope and shred it. - Acidic opinions combined with Social Media unfortunately leads to an amplified "LEMMING EFFECT" - Rebel Moon is lacking character development and back story. - CGI and Green Screen is terrible at times. - The show needed another part or been made into a full series. This would of allowed for better character development, backgrounds, and story arcs to have been achieved. - YET FOR SOME REASON I STILL LIKED IT. I would give it a 6.5 with hopes it gets better.

Uh, we got ZERO back story on Luke, Leah, Chewbaca, R2D2, C-3P0, and Grand Moff Tarkin. ALL the back story we got on anybody else was: Han owed Jabba, the Millennium Falcon made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs, and Obi-wan and Vader used to be friends until Vader turned to the dark side. That's it. And the Star Wars world building was extremely abbreviated, relying heavily on visuals to immerse you until you could catch up. And Star Wars is a classic. And Rebel Moon has not held itself out as anything other than an action-packed hybrid western/space opera. Not sure where these lofty expectations are coming from -- were you expecting Shakespearean drama? ALSO, there's a whole other half of this movie coming out in April in which I assume we will get the payoffs for what has so far been mostly setup. So, gimme a break. #rebelmoon

Logistics ... The further a military force is operating from its home base and/or supply lines, the more dependent it is on local production in the immediate vicinity. The problem is that it makes for sense for the Imperium to approach potential suppliers with a mutually beneficial arrangement (ie give us your grain in exchange for agreed-upon money or protection). Their empire would expand more rapidly through trade agreements than by threatening potential members with brute force if they don't hand over valuable resources, giving bordering nations no choice but to engage in armed resistance for survival.

@mathieuaustin7190 I only got through an hour and twenty minutes of this misfire, and one thing I took away from it was: why didn't Jena Malone's character get recruited instead of Nemesis? She has a unique design, a clear motivation for fighting the empire, and she's implied to be the last of her kind so it adds an additional layer of tragedy. Not to mention that I like Malone as an actress, and she easily makes me believe that her character can do action scenes. Nemesis strikes me as an emotionally bland Jedi-wannabe and the fact that we don't learn her motivation for wanting to fight with Kora right away makes no sense. All I can figure is that Synder wanted a Jedi in his movie, and he had no idea what to do with Malone's character so he used her as a disposable baddy to give Nemesis some credibility.
@mathieuaustin7190
@mathieuaustin7190 4 ай бұрын
@@daigneauray7087 I see your point. Conversely, it was Ms. Malone’s gravitas that added to that of Nemesis in her desire NOT to slay her. I also went in with the hope that she (& literally everyone else) will be better fleshed out in the longer Director’s Cut (which Snyder claims is a completely different movie). Of course this leads me to advising all who ask: just wait for that. I think the complaint of enduring one version to experience a different version is spot on. Whatever one may or may not like about Rebel Moon, a director's cut will likely be better if only in comparison. When it's you against you, you're always gonna win. I am, however, past the point in my life where I think speculative re-writers are generative. If anything, that kind of insight might be better served in crafting one's own story. On that note, you're media analysis and critique is very good and I'd be stoked to read or watch something you may make. I'm more frustrated with the prospect of having to watch yet another movie twice than I am with another mediocre sci-fi flick. People like mediocre sci-fi flicks. They're fine! I just don't like that Rebel Moon has (or is), essentially, homework. I bet the versions will be released far enough apart to require another month's sub to the Netflix.

See, the problem with a two-part movie (and this also applies to Dune, whether you admit it or not) is that we're only seeing half the story; we have no way of knowing if the second half will give the underdeveloped characters and plot the meat they need. For instance, your criticism at 7:15 might be off-base. It seems likely that Noble doesn't desire fame in and of itself, he desires it as a means to prove his worth to Basilarius, and Part 2 will explore that more. But we don't know.

Like yeah, all of those movies end on a cliffhanger with the message to see Part 2 for the conclusion, but none of them have a totally half-baked first movie because the second part will "fix" it. Rebel Moon straight up feels like an unfinished film. That feeling probably even has nothing to do with the fact that it's a two-parter, but more with the fact that it was intentionally cut up by Snyder to later release the full movie as a "director's cut". If you think Kora "ignoring the possible abuse of Sam and then defending herself if jumped" would have been "more" or "better" show and tell, then you need to UP your movie reading game. The character arc of Kora perfectly explains her actions, or better-perfectly SHOWS WITHOUT TELLING why she did what she did. It's just that the arc only starts making sense when you first learn, later on in the movie, that Kora had been a guard-a protector-to the daughter of the slain King, who was slain too, and whom they believed to have been a reincarnation of Princess Issa, something that is suggested as being the case for Sam through the scene where she talks to Jimmy and gives it a floral Tiara. Sam is another reincarnation of Princess Issa and Kora is somehow forever bound to her. She is her eternal protector, even if that includes protecting the community as a whole and not being a personal bodyguard to her for now. She just had to be there, get involved, and save Sam, per fate. It's quite possible Kora doesn't even realize this, hence the indifference. On the other hand, it's highly possible that Jimmy understood Sam as the new Princess Isaa when she touched its face. The movie is shit. There's no doubt about it. The sequel will be shit too. The movie could have used the prophecy to transfuse a transcendental order into the way things played out, something which the score did manage to do at times. And then you talk about character arcs!

The scene with the robot and the girl is the best section of the heart you correctly state the rest of the movie lacks. It’s weird you say it’s unnecessary. It sets up the robot shooting the soldier. The Griffin Navi scene is, as you said, unnecessary.

Your points make sense, and I think changing things around where Kora were a teacher or a support to a more naive main character would make this story more interesting. But the problem wasn't really Kora or who she was. The problem was everything else. Altered Carbon had the exact same kind of protagonist in Takeshi Kovacs, and yet he was infinitely more interesting, and his story was more compelling. So many other things made me annoyed with this movie that'd need to change (the soldiers acting like thugs with a flat hierarchy and no consequence to their actions would have been better off just being criminals or deserters, for instance). But Kora could have worked under better writing, is my point. Maybe just not to this kind of story.

The ➕️ of part 1 THE CHILD OF FIRE - The story inspired by the 7 SAMURAI - The perfect casting especially SOFIA BOUTELLA who plays KORA - The production they put the means to build the village a Ship everything is not in CGI - The sound design of the ship environment - Discreet and effective music to relieve tension. THE ➖️ - The NAZI Look of the representatives of the ORDER not a fan of this choice. - Too many HEADLIGHT LENS effects which are often useless - Too much slow motion which doesn't energize the fights. - A censored version PJ 13 missing 1 hour more gore and more realistic sex. - We need more dialogue between the REBELS, there is no real complicity at this stage of history.

How you say the scene between the Girl and the Android meant nothing when THAT android is the one that saves her? YES if he had not done that then the entire plot would have been screwed. LOL

It was exciting, fun, action packed. It would have been cool to see the spider lady and the bird dragon join the rebel team. The last fight seen was kinda cheesy. Good movie overall though. Zach Snyder, the king of slow motion karate kicks!!!💕💕💕😄

Remember, at the end, when they try to revive Noble, they said "Hit him with everything!" I know the movie had ended, and that particular detail isn't important, but still, can't they be a little bit more creative? lol

On the topic of the scene with Sam and the Robot, it does serve a very simple purpose as a bridge for setup and payoff. With the Robot saying how Sam reminds them of the princess who was assassinated. Taken with the earlier exposition of the machines dropping their arms after her death, it is later payed off when the robot kills the person holding Sam at gunpoint. The movie was terrible, but scenes like that show me that something more interesting could have been produced had this not been a Snyder movie. The Robot was the only good character in the movie in my opinion and that is only in the hope that part 2 can further expand on the lore of their kind, and developing them into a more interesting character. Although I know that would be too much to ask seeing how this movie turned out.

Mostly i just think, there wasnt enough time really building the characters and backstory. I think Rebel Moon would have worked better as a 6 episode series. Six for the first part, and Six for the second part. Each episode an hour long, but each one slowly adding and developing the story and characters. There's a lot of promise in Rebel Moon and I really didnt dislike it at all. I think it was a decent 7.5/10. Maybe the next part could help add to the story a little better. Its possible that the story just feels incomplete because theres more to come in the next movie. But that once again lends validity to my first thought. Rebel Moon would probably have worked great as a six episode series. In fact, if you think about it, many of the scenes in Part 1: A Child of Fire do feel like parts of episodes. Had this been a special limited series on Netflix, it would have had more time to elaborate on lore and build characters better 🙏

Agree, 100%. This story had potential. This was fixable. It could have been great. I dont know why they call it Rebel Moon, Child of Fire. It should have been Rebel Moon: Go Go Gadget, Plot Convenience!
