im designing a campaign where the purpose is to be killed by a red dragon.. its a tragedy.. a fool hearty party of knights who die at the hand of a red dragon.. full of all the lore of the region of a red dragon including fire elementals and lair tactics etc..

I quite like the idea of a polymorphed/transformed red dragon hiring the party to steal from his hoard, and accompanying them on the quest, watching them and learning their skills... after all if they are the mightiest heroes they will probably eventually come for him anyway... this way they are coming on his terms...and in the dragons mind, if he makes an example of these fools he might not be bothered for a generation on two.

Sounds like something a green dragon would do too; their cunning and scheming is quite impressive. Since manipulation is their strength, this would be the perfect plan for a green dragon.

@@kylestanley7843 Yes but he would kill the party right there, a Red Dragon may leave the heroes to grow and challenge him, mas a Green probably would not.

@@VitorRedes that's debatable. A red dragon may as well, but I can see the case being made for a red dragon to follow the party for a while in complete vanity; surely they don't threaten him at all, yes? Whereas a green dragon would probably try and mislead them enough for them to simply leave him alone and perhaps slay a few rivals. When they finally realize what he really is, then they become pissed and try to kill him - which is when he leads them into an ambush. Green dragons looove a good long con.

What if, at the end of a dungeon, instead of a dragon they meet Dr. Agon? Dr. Agon is a family physician that was put out of work by a local cleric. He's really sad and could use a hug. Also, he is so drunk you could light his breath on fire.

One way to avoid some of the metagaming with legendary resistances is by not saying whether it saved with a legendary resistance or the old-fashioned way, just that it saved.
@MrKago1
@MrKago1 5 жыл бұрын
another way is to roll on how many legendary saves he gets. for example have 2+1d4 or 1d6 legendary saves and then roll for what they save against. obviously the DM could do this before the encounter ever begins, back when he is making it, or do this after a long rest if they battle it more than once. combine that with, like you said, just say it saved and there is no way for them to metagame.

My favourite tactic while using a dragon has got to be grappling a party member and then next turn using a dash action and getting 100+ feet into the air and then dropping that party member.

Imagine this: a red dragon's soul has been infused into a character's own, giving them the power of a draconic sorcerer. The dragon still exists in said character as a 2nd personality. The main soul, chaotic good is kind and humble and wants to live a quiet life; while the dragon's soul, lawful evil, is scieming and narcissistic with plains to reclaim its old power and wealth.

As a DM, I use varying levels of AI for monsters based on their CR and whether their are any leaders present. But with dragons, I get to fully inject my full knowledge, meta-game and all (within reason) into the the encounter. The PCs know if they see a dragon, I will unleash all of the fury I can muster.

Noticed that copy of Hero Quest in the back. I used to LOVE that game as a child. Probably what actually got me into fantasy and D&D, as playing that game is the youngest memory I have of playing games and fantasy literature. Man I wish I still had that game for my kid now when he gets a little older. Would have been an amazing family game.

My most memorable encounter with a red dragon was in 1984. Two of us made random characters and played them like bad medieval comedy relief. We were geased to kill a dragon... it was pretty young and we were a whopping 2nd level. I was given an arrow of dragon slaying by the local magistrate, and off we went, only to realize as we were sneaking up to the dragon's lair that neither of us had remembered to bring a bow. So I tied a rope around my waist and told my buddy to pull me out at the first scream. I then crept into the dragon's crib, where it lay sleeping. I jammed the arrow into his neck with everything I had... rolled a 20! The dragon reared up taking me with him and that was my buddy's queue. He yanked me off the arrow and through the corridor as hard as he could. He did so much damage trying to keep me alive that I died. Fortunately, he hauled me back to be revived by the town's healer and we made out like bandits. Pure idiotic hilarity. :D

When 4e and 5e removed the Great Wyrm category, I was very sad; the Great Wyrm is the ultimate "fuck you, here is death incarnate", and now all we've got is the Ancient. Therefore, I devised a monstrosity sprung from nightmares - a beast so terrible that even the greatest dragonslayer would tremble at its mention: The Primeval Red Dragon, the 5th age category, possessing enough power to take on a Tarrasque in a straight fight and win. There are only a few of them in existence, and most of them don't live on the Material Plane... but those who do are sleeping, waiting to awaken and bathe the world in fire. If anyone wants, I'll post the stats. ^_^

He took down the continent of Draconia and sundered the land into multiple part and his armies that follow him enslaved the races there. My party has been working up the past 2 months taking back lands, cities/outposts and freeing slaves and arming them. They also brought an army with them to hit the main city of Carteneux where the dragon sits. I cannot wait to see where it goes I am excited. The questioner gave me an idea for a plot , but also a way to keep the npc dragon alive permanently ,and in the story basically the dragon is a money lender to an entire region kingdom and even though the dragon is lawful evil , the Dragon seeing in the very long term can see the profits and advantages of keeping the local community pacified and using the local kingdom's laws to root out and jail adventurers attempting to trespass and steal the Dragon's treasure , and the laws on self defense.

I really like legendary resistance as a mechanic. If you catch on early enough, it can really help elevate the value of low level spells, particularly those that the dragon wouldn't want to be caught by (my favorite is Hideous Laughter, which would certainly not be something a dragon would want on them since being prone would put them in range of attacks).

6:45 to 7:00 - we actually did this exact thing the other day in our planewalking campaign! A bunch of 7th level PCs on the Plane of Fire just trying to escort a bunch of azer to our geoengineering project, we come under notice that there was a hungry sun drake poking around eyeing up for some tasty dwarf-shaped snackage we just brought to it's attention. My character had a good enough knowledge roll to get a good grasp of the scope of what we were dealing with (CR 14-15ish by 3.5e standards I think?) and needless to say we're kinda shitting ourselves on our own behalves and that of the Azer. In the end though, when it did attack we managed to break through its spell resistance and land a ray of enfeeblement on it, then proceed to pierce it with a sudden stalagmite that it couldn't break free from, before encasing it in stone. And then summoning another stalagmite through its now stationary head. And then the barbarian gargoyle smashed it's head with his solid stone cross. JUST to be sure. One of the most exhilarating encounters I've had, just cause of the sheer "oh god we could all just die" nature of it.

Dragons, always try to lure it out of it's lair and get it damaged... when it retreats back into it's lair do not give it time to rest. As a DM, dragons are not stupid, they should use magic items, particularly protection and healing.

One of the things I like to try against Dragons is hideous laughter. Either you get a great moment of a dragon falling prone laughing hysterically (and they're prone, so not flying around for a while), or you get them to burn a legendary resistance on a level 1 spell slot. Those types of low-level status effect spells are perfect for getting value out of low level spells slots that would otherwise be pretty useless against a dragon.

Our first fight with a red dragon was memorable as hell. We were playing pathfinder. Our group had heard that a dragon was coming so we put our money together to get my ranger character as powerful a dragonbane bow as was possible. During the attack on the town lots of giants and ogres attacked and at one point the dragon also appeared on the sky, swooping down to grab and burn the defenders. I only had time for one shot at the dragon but it happened to be a critical hit so powerful that the gm decided that the dragon has to back down and escape. That was my Bard the bowman moment of the campaign, and even though the dragon was only wounded it was good enough that one attack was powerful enough to send him back to his lair. The next encounter was also memorable. Our rogue descended into the lair of the sleeping dragon and managed to shackle himself on the back of the dragon without waking him up! If you know the senses a sleeping red dragon has you know that the dice-gods were on the rogue's side on those stealth throws. So the dragon wakes and notices someone on his back and flies out of the lair in a rage to kill the intruder. Our party was at the mouth and we did all our attacks and the rest as the dragon swooped past. And the rogue also did his sneak attacks for a lot of damage. The dragon decided it was no match for us so he surrendered all the treasure in his cave in exchange for his life and we let him go.

Spell casting is just fine for 5E. I was gonna homebrew some stuff but look at it like this: Ancient red has (+6) CHA = 6 spells Spell levels no higher than 1/3 of CR = 6 x 8th level spells. Drop anti magic field on it. 1 hour duration. Watch your party try to escape the death trap. Dragon immunities aren’t cancelled out, and it can shred Do this in Rise of Tiamat She has 9 x 9th level spells and retains a ton of output. Anti magic field on Tiamat is a very nice tool.

I had bit of crazy get up with my red dragon, he is elder senior but has got to be the luckiest bastard in of Faerun, his lair is smack dab in the middle of the dwarven fortress, Karak in their tongue, a funny thing the region he......well.....residents has become somewhat of safe haven for some people while for others its lucrative place to find yourself, especially during the War of the Beards, a dwarven civil war, this fortress and many of its nearby cities, were all abandoned when the Duergar a& the Drow made a move to strike on it, long story short they ended up trying to kill each other, dragon swoops in kills them gets their stuff, he is King of the Mountain, and the only way to get there is via the main pathway which only works in summer and late spring, but for the most part the local new inhabit who after the dragon decided to hibernate 100 years and still does, took the opportunity to make themselves a home in the abandoned cities, every so often when he does show up, people look at him mor like devine omen rather than dread since he cleared the bad guys out, he even has several local brads of mead named after him, At one time the Terqs, Persians, wanted to invade Cormmyr, the kingdom rallied its defences and sent for its armies, but before the battle, the dragon roosted the Terqs, sp yeah he is often more wealthy than most other monarchs, but here is the funny parts he from time to time turns human just to get wasted,

@DragonstarFighter
@DragonstarFighter 7 жыл бұрын
Thee things to consider One... the standard alignment of a red dragon is chaotic evil (not really mob boss material), but if you have a lawful evil red dragon, it could be very very cool to actually have him not be a complete and total ass... give him some actual limits on what he thinks is a step to far, and this opens the red dragon up to the possibility of him being a reluctant and of course greedy ally, of the players... Maybe you could run him as Lawful Evil most of the time, but make it so that he has a really bad temper and becomes Chaotic Evil when his temper gets the best of him Two, another lawful evil archetype. Perhapse you could have a vulcanic island of Kobolds who worship the red dragon who lives on the island as their God King, and the Dragon actually considers the Kobolds of the island to be part of its hoard Three, You could actually have a singular red dragon be a Good aligned creature, in your campaign, but you could have someone who has a grudge against red dragons perhaps a paladin, a knight, a nobleman, or even royalty,, going out of his way to frame the dragon, based on its racial reputation, in an attempt to have someone drive out, or kill him. Perhaps committing arson, and paying his subordinates to damage walls and roofs with what look like claw marks... maybe if the person is or formerly was good aligned, he fakes scene of carnage using animal blood, and paid off eye whitnesses... In summation, you can actually do a lot of really cool things with the red dragon, you can do a lot of really cool things with any dragon, and don't let yourself be limited by the alignment in the book.

dont take allignment too serious. A dragon is primarily evil and short tempered. If you play a creature as a parody of its allignment you fail as a DM. They are long lived creatures that probaly are more inteligent then most humans. Play them that way. Thy are arrogant, evil, greedy liars not chaotic marons. I dislike giving them different allignments, for it takes their flavor away. They are also heavily magical creatures so i prefer them to be born the way they are.

For me a red on a rampage is still CE and cunning but it'd still be fast...A night attack because it can glide and come in fast. Then the first hits to an area are bridges and boats likely just physical making it hard to get away. Hell I'd have the red grab and toss boats or wagons and carts into homes and building and there's nothing like a burning cow coming through the wall of a house... then burn the fields, cattle, hay, barns...then go at the mills because flour and grain dust is wonderfully explosive...sweep out burn the woods and all that smoke...and wing beats fanning flames...sheer terror.., cruelty in all that food gone and in a fantasy world that's a huge loss. Add in the fact it can do this really fast honestly and that flying it covers a huge amount of ground...A pissed off or just really malicious red can terrorize and entire lordship/barony in a single night. I'd intro it to characters with something like this and have them see the devastation. And then...really evil kills like killing people with smoke inhalation...not pc's but a small keep, npc's...women and children smothered by the smoke and no fire damage just soot over everything like thick dust.

As always with 5th red dragons are now terribly weak, but no matter the dragons age, a dragon should never fight to the death. It is the apex pretator and will grow only stronger with age. He looks towards year without end. And most importently: It knows that it is better then some (demi)humans that might come for it, therefore it can always come back for them. Its like when a human fights a cat, you will not fight it to death if it hurts you...

I don't think Red Dragons are nearly as scary as Blue Dragons. Blue Dragons live in the middle of massive wastelands, usually filled with their own dangers. They enjoy having servants and manipulating lower creatures, and may have powerful diviners or artificers at their disposal. Red Dragons are ferocious and vain, but Blues are reserved and cunning. Plus, how many parties actually pack lightning resistance? Fire's one of the most common types of magical damages.
@Baileycoltonsummers

Dragon's are underplayed. A red has likely a power structure around him in the locale as well and most dragons in my game are just plainly hard to get to even if they just take out things like bridges and making huge claw rends in roads and even if fire is common that resistance doesn't extend to horses, gear ect. Then there's night flights esp with reds and thermovision or nightsight effects. And then there's always my fave of burning crops and starting forest fires.

I'm sad that 5e dragons are so simple. They can't have as many tricks up their sleeve. The biggest joy of dragons in Pathfinder, and pre-4e D&D, is their spellcasting. I would use that spellcasting to fill the centuries of downtime with divination (info gathering) or spells to customize and reinforce the lair.

It is kind of dick-ish to act like an ass to someone trying to help you . . . . i think what he was trying to say is that 5E is very flexible compared to other editions, if you want your big bad Dragon to have innate spell-casting give them inate spell-casting . . . just because it is in the MM doesn't mean you have to use those exact stats and ability's, maybe this red Dragon is different (either weaker or stronger than it should be but with innate spell-casting etc...) what do you do when you have experienced players at your table that know what a dragon can do inside and out but for one reason or another you can't (or rather it doesn't make sense to) use anything else besides a dragon . . . . . i look at the stats next to a creature in the MM more like guidelines of how they should act and what they can do and not like strict rules that you HAVE to follow . . . . use a bit of imagination FFS

The Fractured But Whole Hi. See my previous response regarding homebrews, and realize I answered you even before you posted. But let me unpack it for you. Every gaming system, from Palladium, to Silhouette, to HKAT, to D20 and its offshoots, are all as flexible as the gaming groups wants it to be... so "homebrew it" is a pointless argument in favor of D&D5 when D&D5 has zero monopoly over such an answer. So, what distinguishes D&D5 dragons from other systems? Answer = they're dumbed down and have no spells, which I don't like. Sorry reading an opinion you don't like makes you feel like I killed your mom. The world isn't a kind and loving place. As for players knowing the stats, that doesn't matter in a group of honest players. Honest players don't use that knowledge unless their character has that knowledge too. If you don't like my tone, realize that this is the comments section of KZfaq. Suck it up and don't be a whiner.

The Fractured But Whole If you didn't give a shit what I thought, you wouldn't bother reading what I type, and _especially_ not get emotionally invested like you obviously are; Your behavior betrays your words. Your name is quickly becoming rather appropriate, "fractured butthole". Don't need to change stats to make the same monster interesting. Actually, stats are the least imaginative way to do that. Situational modifiers, intelligent planning, environmental conditions, etc. Hence my beef with dragons having no spells. Now they come out of the box as just a big monster with elemental powers. You have to tinker with them in order to give them the same flexibility (as above) they had in every D20 system prior. It's obvious "dumbing down" of a key element of the game.

I'm fairly new, so bare with me. One of my characters I'm creating is a Dragonborn, and I want him to be a red Dragonborn but LG for his background story purposes. My question is, does the colour of the Dragonborn HAVE to reflect on what alignment it has? To give a brief overview of the back story; Armash is a sorcerer who serves and worships Bahamut and basically wants vengeance or justice if you will, for his parents. They were killed by a Priest who used to be a close friend of his family's. He eventually learns that Nadarr, the priest, is under Tiamats control, and because Armash's colour of skin is red, Tiamat wants him to serve her. When he goes to confront Nadarr, Armashs mothers sorcery his harnessed within him and during the process, Nadarr flees. He hasn't been seen since. So because of what happened, questions himself on whether or not he can trust anyone anymore, but also wants to find common ground between his enemies to see if they actually believe in what Tiamat stands for. I want to see if he can gel nicely in the two Tiamat campaigns and see if I can get my GM to tweak my conflict in the actual plot. (He wasn't actually intended to be apart of it to begin with). I just find Tiamat and Bahamut incredibly interesting. Anyway, apologies for my long comment, I just want to seek help for wherever I can. This channel seems to be just as helpful with the videos, I thought I'd actually try and get some direct help. Thank you, and greetings from Australia :).

Alignment and race CAN be tied together, but they don't have to be. I know a guy who played a Black Dragonborn paladin who was LG. It's all in your RP, me personally I'd run one as CG if I wasn't running an evil character. Chaotic Good simply because to me they'd be a good character, they have good intentions, but maybe have a sharp temper that reflects their Red Dragon bloodline.

Kylo_Phasma a racial alignment is basically a cultural alignment so if raised in a certain society they have innate tendencies but it is always fun to make a character who's alignment is different than the suggested alignment and they constantly have to deal with "actively trying to overcome their natural tendencies"

5e fucked everything up. In my personal opinion. If you’re great dragons not ruling over a great span of land with armies of other creatures. You’re doing something wrong. Dragons are not some dumb creature who sleeps under a rock waiting for an adventurer to come around to slay the damn thing. Dragons are very intelligent, methodical, charismatic beans that has a great deal influence. Tons of experience and knowledge over the years they have lived. Able to cast insane amount of spells without the need to prepare or need material components for. Commanding great armies to protect their land and the dragon itself. Dragons are made more for role playing, building an adventure around the dragon. Not a stupid boss fight at the end of a level. But if you want to play your campaigns that way, more power to you. Just don’t tell people how dragons are dumb powerful creatures. Then again 5e is just dumb down and streamlined.

@frknspacewizardbrett6044
@frknspacewizardbrett6044 7 жыл бұрын
That's what they were saying (although I will admit, I only noticed because I was looking for it because of this comment). What they meant by the 4th spell is not that the first 3 be bad (like a first level spell or something), but for those spells to be just dangerous. For example, a Wizard might trick the dragon into thinking that they aren't as powerful as they actually are, so when they cast some 5th level spells out, they play it up as some massive deal so that the dragon thinks that it's the best they have. Then, when all of the legendary resistances are used up, they pull out a 6th level spell that does way more damage. Another example of this might be that the rest of the party puts the dragon in a bad position so that if the dragon gets moved to a certain spot then the players might be able to deal tons of damage to the dragon, so when that wizard casts that spell that pushes the dragon back, the dragon might think it's foiled the players plans by using one of its legendary resistances, when in actuality it was playing right into the players hands. Clever things like that can force the dragon into a bad spot that it can't get out of. I hope this helped you understand. =D P.s. This reply to your comment was not intended to insult you in any way. If it has done so, then I am sorry. Sometimes I do not see how others interpret what I say.

I think there's too much of players doing meta gaming in that case. A dragon needs to be played smartly it's the signature monster of the game so getting it into position should be hard as hell. As to the legendary saves these are up to the DM to call and their use should be related to the individual dragon and it's experiences. My beef is the thought that the dragon as some seemed to be heading towards had to use those saves first. For me that's not accurate dragon use. I have huge issues with dragons being used wrongly and easy for players to defeat.
