Podcast is Called : ASN Humans Are Space Orcs , HFY and other stories
--------------
This Story is Classified as HFY or Humanity Feck, Yea , but what does the Mean?
-------------
HFY is a story/series that takes a “human element” in either humanity or an “other” (race/species or object) that exists in a “setting” (future or other world/universe) with varying levels of culture, technology, society and history that help show in some shape or form the potential good or bad for humanity’s race/culture. In These stories Humans are often referred to as Human, Humanity, Deathworlder, Hellwolder in reference to the human planet of origin , Earth. This planet is seen by most of the universe as a place where only death and chaos can survive.
-------------
Taken from the FAQ of the r/HFY subreddit.
Humans Are Space Orcs (HASO) or Humans Are (Fantasy Race) Are used as a guide when writing.
In these Stories we normally View humans like the other races view orcs in a Fantasy Novel. We (Humans) share the same characteristics and personalities as orcs. Humans are normally treated as the outsiders and barbarians. Humans tend to be underestimated as well in these stories. Unlike Humanity Feck Yea , these don't always put a positive spin on humans\humanity sometimes looking at the darker side of human and humanity from the perspective of aliens.

What is the limit to what humanity can and will do to you? There isn't one. We routinely find more creative and interesting ways to kill, maim, and torture each other... FOR FUN. We impose limits on ourselves so as to not get "too out of hand" with each other. Because, the act of dehumanizing each other to the point that we don't care what happens... at this stage in our development, means we could destroy our entire species without a thought to the consequences. I suspect that once we're no longer limited to our own planet... "atrocities" will only exist as "rendering habitable and valuable real estate uninhabitable, because nobody wins there".

Also, for both the victors and the losers, such that the war doesn't need a sequel, if possible. If the victors are nothing more than monsters, it's only natural to go and hunt them down. Reminds me of a history lesson, the honor system of one nation said "being taking prisoner is the greatest dishonor", while the other said "wasting lives in a suicidal last charge with no chance of victory is dishonarable since it shows that you don't care about any human lives" and stuff like that. So when one side surrendered because they were facing certain death, and the other suicide charged they were seen as monsters who didn't value any life, each saw the other as unhonorable savages.

The only problem with disregarding those principles is that you open the door to more drastic measures. One of the most glaring examples of such is the United States' decision to utilize atomic weapons in response to the Japanese unwillingness to regard some of these principles, one of those being treatment of POWs. In conclusion, disregarding Terran principles of war is a counterproductive trait subject to being removed from evolution with extreme prejudice.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 2 жыл бұрын
@@dalemorgan8263 Go re read your history. The Atomic bombs were dropped because casualty rates in places like Okinawa were staggering, for both sides. They were dropped to force Japan's surrender in order to reduce casualties, especially allied casualties. Fun fact, you know that every Purple Heart awarded since WWII ended has come from the stockpile the US Military ordered for the Invasion of Japan? It had little if anything to do with Japanese war crimes.

I'm sorry, but this story just begs for some Sabaton in the background. "We are mad at the human, and are thinking about going to war with them for being too barbaric... do you think they will fight fair?" No friend, we will not. We will make it so the next race who suggests this in your councils are rightfully called suicidal. And, in the off chance you choose to break our rules of war, you will discover that yes, we were in fact trying to give you "a fair fight". Because, as the old swordsman said... I am not actually left handed. As long as you do not break the rules, we will resist you, and in the end we will win. If you do, however? You will discover we had MANY tools we had refused to use. Not because they are not effective... but because they ARE. In many cases, they are too effective. PLEASE do not force us to open those storehouses. Because you have no idea how bad it will be.

A very modern and western view of war. One created in great part by the United States when fighting wars that it has or had the great advatage. When things are more even the level of "protect non combatants" becomes a sliding scale. Mostly looking like do not cause civilian deaths with out cause or great effect. I am not saying it is uniquly Western nor American, only that being "carful" is the domain of great powers that know they need not be "brutal" untill of course they do. The US treatment of MOST german and Italian POW's was good and far better that that of Soviet POS's does but there is still many instances of mistreatment (the exeption not the rule) Go back 100 years it gets a lot more gray go back a few more centuries or just to a differnt culture, things change greatly.
