@@bryondavis2173 One or two of the comic book movies are ok (The first Iron Man comes to mind)... but in my opinion, the problem with most movies these days is THEY DON'T TAKE THEIR TIME to develop tension, character development, or anything else that would make the audience care. If you haven't seen it already, rent or stream the 1953 version of War of the Worlds. It took it's time.

Former Marine here. I have seen Aliens probably over 100 times. It is a beloved movie to me. That being said....one of the scariest parts of the movie is when Ripley looks at Newt and says these people are here to protect you....they are soldiers and Newt raises her head up and looks at Ripley and says it won't make any difference. James Cameron created so much dredd and hopelessness with that scene in itself. Enjoyed seeing your all's reaction to one of the best movies ever created. Semper Fi.

The dialogue in this movie is as good as it gets. Also like how Aliens has a direct inverse to the "scariest scene," you mentioned after shit starts to hit the fan, that elicits the same feeling of dread, just in a more comedic way. Remember how after the marines start taking losses and get trapped, that one marine is openly panicking about the situation and how they're all gonna die, and Ripley in an attempt to calm him down tells him how Newt survived for months without any weapons or help, and he responds "Then why don't you put HER in charge!" That scene never fails to make me and my Dad laugh, the dramatic absurdity of it is just pure gold...

@@tankmaster1018 Yea that is a classic line in Aliens. Bill Paxton aka Hudson is the character your referring to. There are so many classic phrases and quotes in Aliens. It's definitely one of the best movies ever made in my opinion.

@@VegasGlaive His line "Game over! Game over, man!" (when the drop ship crashed) was improvised on the spot - wasn't in the script. Also, after kvetching & whining as the tension mounted, once the firefight started, he toggled instantly from complainer to combat soldier.

@@VegasGlaive Theres a game, Starcraft, the lines of the dropship unit (on the game) are all the lines from ferro while piloting the dropship... "in the five, five by five"...and "strap yourselfs in, boys..." etc... this movie was so great that even now, ppl copy lines, postures, atitudes, and so on.

Fun Fact BJ and Asia: At the movie premier. Paul Risner's (Burke) mother cheered when burke was killed by the Alien. She was so disgusted by his behavior after he tried to have Ripley and Newt killed in the lab. When it came to his death, she exclaimed with glee, 'Thank God, he deserved it.' Paul Risner looked at his mother in utter shock. Hilarious for sure.

There's also a deleted scene where Ripley finds him cocooned to a wall when she's looking for Newt. He asks her to kill him since he can feel the embryo inside of him. She hands him a grenade and walks away.

I think this was the reasons people reacted so badly to the new Hollywood writers that accused people of being masogonist when they had all the new lead female roles in movies,the truth is people are perfectly fine with lead female roles there were lots during this period Ripley and Sarah Connor from Terminator being two great examples but they have to be written well not like the modern ones that seem to have to constantly remind us that they female or just act like complete bitches through the whole film till they just unlikeable as characters.

@@calvinheslop2585 Unfortunately I have to agree with you. Warrant Officer Lt. Ellen Ripley, Princess Leia Organa, Sarah Connor, Officer Anne Lewis, the original version of Alita (not that the new version is bad, but they put a little TOO much emphasis on her being a MATURE girl), Meg from the Blob, all damn good characters from BEFORE the millennium. If you have to constantly remind the audience that your character is a woman, you have FAILED as a screenwriter.

Ripley's "They can _bill_ me!" is an underrated comment. And, when I saw it in the theater, the audience's roar of approval after "Get away from her, you bitch!" down out the soundtrack for a few seconds (and this was a *loud* movie in the theater).

In a Predator movie the librarian type female, tells the refugees about the government radio instructions to remain where they were so they could rescue them. Fleeing citizens are skeptical. She says, "They're from the government. They wouldn't lie." This theater was in Washington, D.C. and they got the biggest laugh I EVER heard from an audience .

Y'all missed one of the most touching parts of the entire movie. When Ripley and Newt hug after the airlock closes, Newt calls Ripley mommy. Makes me shed a tear every time.

Yesss, Newt and Ripley's relationship is so heartfelt! Newt needed a mom so badly and Ripley's daughter grew old and passed away while she was stranded in space... she needed to get to be a mom again. ❤😢

In an interview with James Cameron, he said something about how Bishop was a kind of mirror image to Ash from ALIEN. Ash had portrayed androids as creepy and evil, while Bishop portrayed them as socially awkward but reliable. Cameron wanted Bishop to have a kind of innocence about him, and Lance Hendrikson delivered. He looked creepy as hell while crawling through the pipe, but it's also worth remembering that Vasquez offered him a pistol for self defense and he handed it back to her.

@@johncox6321 The Xenomorphs wouldn't count to Asimov's Laws, since they aren't intelligent and the specific wording on Asimov's first law is that "A Robot cannot harm a human, or through inaction, allow a human to come to harm" I think it's just that Bishop knows full well that the handgun she was handing him wouldn't do Jack-Sh@t to a Xenomorph, since its the same pistol Gorman uses later and we see the bullets just bouncing off the Xenos. Vasquez kills one with her pistol, but that was a much more powerful 45 Calibre M1911 and she still had to put the muzzle aright to the side of the Xeno's head and shot it three or four times to get through the armour.

@@weldonwin the drones have an intelligence level around that of dogs. The queen ,however, has been stated in the novels in comics to have an IQ of around 120 so she would count.

@@Necrowolf81 I think I should be clear, that when I say they aren't intelligent, the Xenomorphs are not sapient. They do clearly have a high degree of problem solving and tactical intelligence, but there appears to be no individual intelligence and they have no capacity for higher reasoning, with their only drive being survival. Again, Bishop's programming and the Three Laws, specifically say he cannot harm a human. The Xenos are obviously not human and there for he can harm them, especially if it means protecting a human. Its just that seeing as he's studied the aliens as best he could, he's fairly certain that the 9mm pistol he's being handed is worth somewhere between Jack and Sh@t against a Xeno and Jack just left town.

She's no soldier. That was a brilliant woman with maternal instincts, and nerves of steel who decided that her promise to that little girl was not going to be broken. Going down in the elevator, when she took that deep breath, and then came that look which was equal parts ultimate terror, and unbreakable resolve. Ellen Ripley is my goddamn hero.

I believe part of the reason that Ripley was so very intent on protecting and saving Newt was the fact that during suspended animation for interstellar travel, her own daughter had a full life and died. After the destruction of the Nostromo, she and the cat drifted for a LONG time before being recovered.

Alien 3's pretty miserable but I love David Fincher as a Director so find greatness in it, and 4 is delightful if you see it as a graphic novel come to life rather than a part of the saga. I'm also a sucker for that Avengers style Joss Whedon camaraderie, and 4/Resurrection has that in spades. Also has our Sigourney Weaver in Her most uninhibited bada$$ performance in the role!💖

Being an 80's baby, this is one of my favorite movies, ever. There's one scene in the extended/director's cut I wish they would have left in this movie, and that's when she is on the hospital outpost at the beginning in an atrium and learns of her daughters fate. It sets the stage as to why Ripley takes such a strong maternal interest in Newt. Great review guys, as always!

Yes. But I think they left it out in the end because it was actually rewriting her character and nothing in the first film gave any hint that she was a mother. Then again we saw her attachment to Jones and Newt also being the lone survivor of her encounter with the aliens helped formed the connection between her and Ripley. Interesting that some official movie publications of the time did mentioned Ripley’s daughter.

@@PungiFungi I remember seeing this when I was 10, we saw the directors cut in theaters!! Because I remember my dad buying this movie when it came out on VHS and we were like WTF...were is the rest of the movie! You get so much more, with the automatic guns in the hallways making them retry their attack going through the air vents. Seeing the family of terraformers find the alien ship and get the facehugger action.

@@shawnadams1460 I think you're confused ... The directors cut (special edition) wasn't released until 5 years later in 1992 and was VHS/laserdisk only. The "Broadcast edit" was being shown regularly on TV from 1989 onwards, that had the scenes with the automatic-guns as well.

Jenette Goldstein won Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayl of Private Vasquez in Ailens. She had memorable roles as John's foster mother in Terminator 2 : Judgement Day and the Irish mother comforting her kids with a bedtime story as the ship sinks in the movie Titanic.

Mark Rolston (Drake) recently said in a interview. Jenette initially auditioned thinking it was a illegal immigrants story. She showed up as a Latina in the audition. Ultimately she got the part just not in the type of film she assumed. Citation: The Critical Drinker Interviewed Mark Rolston.

The actor for Hicks was Kyle Reese from the terminator and Hudson was one of the first 3 guys (guy with mohawk) to be killed by Arnold for their clothes at the start of the movie. In fact the character for Hudson has the privilege of being in Aliens, Terminator and Predator 2 movies. The android Bishop was also one of the police station cop in the terminator.

@@babyfry4775 But only after James Remar was arrested for drugs during filming. There are parts of the film where you can't see Hicks' face in which it's actually Remar. For instance, when they first walk into an alien-converted tunnel. (ref: The Movies That Made Us, Netflix.) Thankfully Remar got sober after that.

the extended version really goes into Ripley's past, and her daughter who died of old age 2 years before Ripley was found. and we see Newt's family before all hell breaks loose on LV-426, in fact, it was Newt's dad who was the first victim of the colonists. with Ripley meeting Newt, her motherhood instincts went into overtime.

The game Alien Isolation is the story of Ripleys adult daughter investigating the disappearance of The Nostromo (and her mother). Taking place between Alien and Aliens (obviously) it is really well done.

The slow buildup in _Alien_ makes sense because it was a suspense film. However, viewers watching _Aliens_ right after _Alien_ would lack the surprise factor of the unknown from _Alien_ . While also prefer the scenes from the extended version, its removal is understandable to maintain the pacing of _Aliens_ as a more of an action film.

@@serinx I chose this user name because in 1986, Star Brand was the first "adult" long form storytelling comic I'd ever read. The main character was really flawed, didn't want his power, and was cheating on his girlfriend with an eccentric female friend who wasn't exactly the brightest. (Quack) 🦆 Currently, I think Marvel comics has the rights to all the characters because they brought back the White Event and Star Brand along with Night Mask. They changed the origin a bit as well as his costume and folded him into the Avengers. I don't know if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has the right to get Star Brand up on the big screen but I hope so. However the character is so overpowered that they'll probably change him so much that he'll be unrecognizable.

@@starbrand3726 I have a couple of guesses. 😂 You might get a kick out of this story. About 15 years ago I went to Wizard World in Chicago. I wanted to bring a book for autographs so I went to my local comic book shop and picked up a copy of the first issue of Kickers Inc. All of the writers and artists got a big kick (no pun intended) out of it. They all laughed, some doodled pictures on it. Except Kevin Smith who looked at it, said “this isn’t one of mine”, and handed it back to me. I was really disappointed in his reaction because I expected him to really appreciate the humor. I loved everyone else’s reactions. Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, my friend.

Hollywood can't write proper strong female characters anymore without making them OP and without flaws. Here you get two of the best: Ripley and Vasquez. Proper three-dimensional characters you can believe in, with their own motivations and they stay true to their characters throughout the story. Vasiquez' death was the one that hit me most in this film.

Well, You have two examples of how to write a woman character well. Ripley a well-rounded character that explores the many facets of motherhood, and Vasquez being one of the few examples of the "man with tits" trope that was actually well written.

Bill Paxton's line "Game over man, Game over!" Was an ad lib line. It has become iconic and a modern day byword for a situation where you are just totally screwed. The writers were totally into The writer Robert Conred, ( Heart of Darkness, which was the basis for the movie Apocalypse Now, directed by Stanley Kubrick.) since the ships in both movies are named for towns in his books.

Ripley is not only the GOAT for female actions leads, she’s one of the all time greatest period. This movie disturbed the hell out of me when I was a kid. It’s one of the greatest films of the 80’s, and one of James Cameron’s best films he ever did. It has great characters, acting and is absolutely relentless with how it plays with your emotions. It has elements of action, horror, science fiction and drama all in one film. The last half hour is nothing short of epic. Classic film, and great reaction.

You can see all the fear, all the uncertainty and doubt in her mind when her eyes are closed, then she takes a breath, opens her eyes, and she's suddenly got ice in her veins. What I love about Ripley's decision to go back to get Newt is it makes you think about what YOU would do in that situation. I don't think I'd have had the guts to go back. Remember what Ripley herself said when the soldiers noticed Apone and Deitrich were still alive? She said "You can't help them. Right now they're being cocooned with all the rest". But with Newt, Ripley promised her "cross her heart and hope to die" that she would not leave her.

I suppose my question is what would Ripley have done had Newt had a facehugger attached to her when Ripley found her. Would she have taken her and it back to the Sulaco or would she have left them where they were to be incinerated along with the rest of the colony? It's not like Newt would have suffered any more at that point. The facehugger would still be on her face when the reactor exploded anyway.

Her only chance would be to freeze her in one of those hibernation units and hope medical science could take the implanted alien out without killing her, but that seems like a really low probability. Plus Ripley would have been worried about doing exactly what Burke was trying to do - bring back a frozen alien for the Company. She'd likely suspect they would be less concerned with saving Newt and more interested in securing a bio-weapon.

@@michaelmarcum3898 if I recall correctly, the first victim had a couple of hours pass by between the face hugger leaving and the parasite alien ripping through his abdominal cavity. So if I saw her with a face hugger, I might just leave. She would not be aware of anything before the installations self destructed. Trying to get her out of there would attract unwanted attention. And risk having another freaking alien aboard the ship.

Ellen Ripley is a badass and that's why I love her character. She's real and she gets stuff done in spite of the odds against her and in spite of the stupidity surrounding her. The subsequent movies are not anywhere near as good as the first two but you should watch them just to finish out the series.

I'm bummed for missing the live cast, but this was still great lmao. Sargeant Apone (my favorite of the marines) the cigar smoking leader, was not only an actor, but a Vietnam vet who was the military advisor for the film. He had all of the marines marching in formation around the set for two weeks, before Sigourney Weaver arrived. This directed by James Cameron, the same guy that gave the first two Terminator films. So Jaws gave us: "You're gonna need a bigger boat." Aliens gave us: "Game over man!" lol

I think you two would really like watching the 1982 theater movie "The Thing" staring Kurt Russell... it's a scary sci-fi movie that's been shown on TV since then many many times and still is. A prequel of it was released in 2011 also called "The Thing" (the prequel is also good).

The original movie "The Thing from Another World" was made in 1951. It's B&W and one of the best sci-fi movies from the fifties. It was shown on TV a few years later and scared the living daylights out of this little girl. (I'm 72 now.) I highly recommend you watch this, even if it costs $2.99 to rent.

Ripley's connection to Newt would make more sense if you watched the Extended version. You find out that she had a daughter who died 2 years before Ripley got back who was roughly the same age as Newt when Ripley left Earth.

Love that briefing scene where they start out not taking it seriously. Ripley starts describing what they are up against. Suddenly the whole atmosphere changes. They saw it in Ripley's eyes and behavior. And they still weren't ready. Also liked the hype moment that followed. BJ is about to look for a rifle of his own. Meanwhile Asia "Everybody let's go! Ya'll go ahead! Yeah... No." 😄 I would have never left the ship in orbit. The minute I lost contact with the ground team. Orbital bombardment. Sorry Newt.

Someone once figured out, using the population of the colony as an upper limit to how many active hunter aliens there could have been when the marines landed that if you make reasonable subtractions based on the number of these beasts that get killed during the course of the movie, by the time Ripley is going back into the nest to find Newt, there can't be more than maybe a dozen aliens left, including the Queen. The Marines got slaughtered, but they did a good job of making the aliens pay for their victory.

Ripley said there was 157 colonists there. So say half were killed\died, that's STILL AT LEAST 77\78 colonists became hosts, so about that many Xeno's. That's NOT counting the Marines taken, not killed.

However, this sort of estimate neglects the possibility of large pets (such as dogs), or other large domestic animals or livestock as potential hosts for aliens. The colony had supposedly been there for about 20 years, and there was an established breathable atmosphere. Putting out lots of plants would only accelerate oxygenating the atmosphere, then having cattle to help fertilize those plants, as well as feeding the colony doesn't seem like an unrealistic possibility to me.

And here's the thing. I was watching Asia very closely this whole reaction. She's not covering her eyes so as not to see gory/scary things. In fact, the scarier and gorier it is, the more gleefully she's just soaking it in, often with her hands down. No, what's going on is, when she senses danger, her instinct is to protect her eyes. But she makes sure not to obstruct her view, and her fingers are spread wide so she can still see between them, not close together ready to cover her eyes up. So kudos to Asia for that.. it ain't fear.. it's just defensive.

And apart from Asia and BJ who are of course irresistible, this to me is the difference between Alien and Aliens. Aliens allows the audience to laugh along the way, whereas Alien is deadly serious. I prefer the original film, but Aliens is arguably more fun.

The first time I watched it was a few years after it was released and I was still a child. Needless to say, it truly scared me! But watching it this time around with the two of you made it more bearable!

Three of the actors from "Aliens" are in the underrated "Near Dark." Jenette Goldstein(Vasquez), Lance Henricksen (Bishop), and Bill Paxton(Hudson) are impressively reunited in that movie.

I met Michael Biehn at comic con and he was very cool. He played Hicks in Aliens and Kyle Reece in Terminator. This movie is tense. A cool down period is needed after this one.

I watched this in the Odeon Leicester Sq. In London, a massive 1500 people cinema with an upper ring. We were in the upper level, front and Centre, which put us in the middle of the screen and the sweet spot for the sound. It was a totally mesmerizing movie… especially with those incredible effects, pacing, sound and dramatic score. I was eating a big ole box of popcorn which m, at the jumpscare with Burke looking at the creatures in the glass jars, flew right up and over the balcony onto the patrons below… let’s just say a whole bunch of screams from below as they got peppered with popcorn😂😂😂 The best part was that final scene when Ripley faces the mother and says: let her go you bitch! The whole cinema cheered at that moment and fevered with Ripley as she beat the mother in that mechanical suit. To this day this movie still stands the test of time and watching you’re enjoyment and reaction was lots of fun.

The best soundtrack EVER! Back in the early 00's I was a bodybuilder and used the music from this film in my posing routine- it was such a hit.

Thing is Ripley knew the alien had to get Newt to an egg before she could be infected. She knew she had an opportunity to save her if she could find her quickly as she had just been taken. And Ripley had a promise to keep, not to leave her.
