Very interesting video. A subject that is not easy to articulate in the Irish context. It makes a lot of sense to distinguish between patriotism and nationalism. As an Irish translator, there’s always been a pull by others to align the language and culture with nationalism and politics. At third level, religion was always downplayed or worse yet blamed for our complex cultural identity. It’s always baffled me!? We have the religious, particularly in Louven, for preserving our history and as such our language and our Irishness. The monks before them… I can’t imagine Ireland without our Catholic faith. And that’s probably was so destabilising about modern Ireland. We’ve given up on a huge stake of our identity and won’t realise how destabilising that is until it’s too late. I’m also very fearful of nationalism. Yes, I love being Irish and I love the culture, Irish literature and the language. But nationalism puts it on a pedestal it doesn’t deserve. We need to learn from WWII and not repeat its nationalist mistakes. On the other hand, I’m sceptical and fearful of this idea of no borders, of no national identity of a globalist type view. Thank you for the food for thought. It’s not an easy subject. Modern Ireland is poorer for embracing secularism.

There's nothing wrong with patriotism. The problem we have in Ireland, and throughout Europe, is that it's being watered down, by the influx of refugees, asylum seekers and economic migrants, who are not being vetted, or limited. We also have to take into account, the fact that Irish people are having very few children, and this will affect our culture, in the future.

True. Eventually you will be forced to confront the racial component to nationalism. It isn’t everything, but it is a big factor. Hispanics in America might be Catholic, but their national identity is still with their people from their homeland.

I think what doesn’t help is that majority of left leaning liberals hate religion, so anyone who is disgusted by them realised how important religion is to protect as a right liberals want to abolish

Thanks Father Brendan - as always some thought provoking and soul searching content. The issue of national identity can be complex if one allows it to be complex. Identity has always been bound to territory. In ancient times there was the city state (think Sparta, for example). Internecine battles and wars were usually about territory/materials. Conquest was enforced through culture. The Roman currency used throughout its empire re-enforced conquest by having an image of the emperor on coins used throughout. The coin found in the fishes mouth by St Peter in Judea had the image of the emperor embossed upon it, certainly. Look at the coinage throughout the Eurozone. The nation will always be there. The state? History shows that states come and go. Bohemia and Moravia, existed at one time.

Why is Paganism always referred to in a negetive sense within mainstream catholicism? I never really hear this in referrence to any other religions or belief systems.
