In this video I give a quick review of a Remington 742 Woodsmaster chambered in 30-06. I explain why you should buy one of these if you happen to come across one and I explain scope options. I also give a sneak peak of an upcoming video on my Savage 110 chambered in .270.

The 742 is an awesome rifle. I have the 742 in a BDL grade version. It was made in 1979 according to the two alphabets stamped on the barrel. I am not a collector of Remington's but I do have the 742 BDL, 760 BDL (pump action) and the 700 BDL, not to mention the 572 BDL (22 rifle) and the 552 ADL. That rifle there that you have is the 742 ADL version. The biggest difference between the ADL and the BDL is the BDL has a Monte Carlo stock, the forearm is a rectangle and the checkering on the BDL is a basket weave style checkering. All of my Remington's are in 30-06. Awesome deer hunting rifles. Thanks for sharing your review of the 742.

i've had a few of these 742 rifles and never had problems. all were in good shape and probably only used at the range a few times and hunting. calibers were 3006, 308 and 243. i now have a 7400 in 270 and will say i was quite supprised how much more accurate it is than my oldies.

I bought a 742 in .30-06 new back in 1981. I also installed see through mounts and a cheap Bushnell 3-9x33 scope. I never took an animal with it, through several unsuccessful hunts. The action used to pick up all sorts of twigs and crud out in the field. I was never thrilled with the accuracy. It would generally keep them inside a 4" or so circle at 100 yards. In the early 2000s I replaced the inexpensive see through sights with Leupold standard mounts, and by letting the barrel cool all the way to COLD between shots, I was able to achieve a FEW 1" four shot groups using Remington 180 grain CoreLokts. I don't consider this rifle to be worth reloading for. As I got older and earned more money, this rifle got moved to the back of the safe and I began acquiring bolt action hunting rifles of various manufacturers and calibers. My two favorites are a Remington 700 BDL in .30-06, and a CZ550 in 6.5x55. Both are very accurate. The 700 is in my opinion much better balanced than my 742, and certainly far more dependable. I don't plan to sell my 742, but I don't see it getting much use, either.

4” is very acceptable for a deer gun at 100 yards. The kill zone is 16” on a side view shot on deer. It’s not a target rifle.

Loved my 742 for all these years, and my dads 742 3003 carbine. Both shooters, not target punchers but both are very accurate. They were farmers rifles. We still have them in the safe with fond memories in the woods. Thank you for the very nice review even though a long time ago, it seems an interest in them is here again!

The bolt will chew up the rails inside the action. The 7400 has an improvement on that issue. The most common problem is the tension of the forearm screw. The POI will shift at different setting. I have a 7400. I tested some reloads with 150 gr and IMR4064. It was getting 3/4". I took the forearm apart to clean the gas port, then reinstalled it. The POI will shift anywhere to 10 inches up and down. Re-torqued it and after a few shots, the screw came loose again. I just play with my Browning Abolt instead. It is more reliable and more accurate.

I have the .308 version and once killed a 900 lbs moose at over two hundred yards. Excellent deer and moose rifle! Don't really need the semi-auto, though, as it adds a complication and even a serious safety issue: being my first moose, I was so excited that once we reached and gave her the coup de grace I leaned the rifle against a tree to start quartering, etc, not thinking that the next round was chambered. My dad very rightly gave me a good talking-to about it! If that rifle had fallen over a shot could have gone off. My own thoughtlessness kinda put a bit of a damper on my triumphal moment. My dad's hunting rifle is a bolt action Remington chambered in .30-06. I think ultimately I would prefer that.

I have a 7400 in 30-06. I like the rifle, but find it to be very ammunition picky. It doesn’t eject Remington ammunition but cycles Winchester super X and military Ammo just fine.

These can be tricky to take down to clean, but not impossible. Most of them we’re never cleaned because the manual says not to attempt it, bring it to a good gunsmith. I clean mine, it’s not that hard if you approach it with confidence and pay attention.

Be very careful when buying this series of Remington 700, 742, etc. You have to make sure you remove the magazine and look inside the receiver . The rails inside the receiver that the bolt rides in can be scalloped or chewed up from the design of the bolt slightly jumping around after about 400 rounds. I've heard they dont hold up to a high round count. Mine is like this. It still shoots, however.

They used to make eight round magazines for this rifle, not sure if they are still being made but you can find nearly anything on eBay or Gunbroker.com. I don't advise banging away too many rounds with this rifle, they wear out VERY quickly and usually are not repairable (economically.) They're fine for hunting at modest ranges.

I have this gun in 30/06 and really like it. Have you ever taken the bolt apart for cleaning? I did last night and lost one of the pins that hold the bolt latch in place. I can't remember if the rounded pin goes in the front near the bolt face or the hole further back...

I have this same rifle given to me by my father. My uncle removed the sites when I was in high school. I still have them and want to put them back on. What scope mounts do you have? Leopold? any model number? I already have the weaver base. Also having shot this rifle I think it is definitely 300 and under rifle and I personally won't go for anything outside of 200 yrds with it. I am also looking at a Savage and my son will use the Remington when he gets tired of being a vegan!

rsaathoff Lol. To be honest I am not sure as to the model number, they are Leupold brand and the aluminum Rifleman series though. I actually ordered the rings off Amazon. I believe they are the only see through weaver mounted rings that Leupold makes currently. Really one of the few company it seems that makes weaver mounted see through rings and I love them. They give a perfect sight window to the open sights. And yes the rifle is definitely infamous for not being a tack driver, but it is still an overall great gun IMO, especially for brush hunting or etc. www.amazon.com/Leupold-Rifleman-Detachable-See-Thru-55880/dp/B001HN5H8Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433102196&sr=8-1&keywords=leupold+see+through+rings

I have a question not on gun but on scope mounts. I got a magnacraft scope on that Remington 770 and the front lens is adjustable, but it's about two inches so I have to push it forward so it clears the barrel.I want to move it back so I get a better sight picture. I got a rail on the rifle not sure may be weaver and brackets I think medium but too low for scope. Looking for brackets a little higher not see thur, because no open sights on rifle. Do you have any ideas? How can I solve this problem? Help! lol Good vid. by the way. As always. Your friend De.

Look up the Nikon P-series scope mounts on amazon. They are pricey but they may fix your issue. I won't be home for a little while but when I am I will try to assist further. It's a pain to use youtube on my phone. The nice thing about the p series from nikon if you look at a pic they can be turned either way to help with eye relief(you will understand what I mean when you see them).
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 9 жыл бұрын
De Eagle Otherwise I would get the high Leupold Rifleman mounts. I sware by those mounts now. Very well built Aluminum mounts and are priced right around $20. Really hard to beat. They are the only rings I use anymore.
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 9 жыл бұрын
Also if you see the rings on my Savage .270 I believe those are the medium Leupold Rifleman rings and they allowed for clearance of that 4-16 x 40 Bushnell Banner with adjustable objective. So you may be able to squeeze by with the medium in the Leupolds. I hate how there is no uniformity. Company X medium rings are likely an entirely different height than company Y medium rings. I always try to use the lowest physically possible to use but that's just my philosophy, not sure there is any science to that lol

One thing I would mention when buying a used one is to drop the mag and really inspect the inside of the receiver. The action is built directly into the receiver housing itself, so if it gets worn out there is really no way to repair it. I have a 1979 model and I agree that they are great guns, but really never intended to run tons of ammo through them like an AR or something of that nature
@MegaBait1616

how many rounds does she holed? where is the mag? how do ya load? cause i have plenty of the "black toys" but i would like to get this rifle in 30-06. thank you.
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 8 жыл бұрын
+MegaBait56 5 shot removable box magazines which is an awesome feature. Magazines will be rather difficult and expensive to track down unfortunately but they are available. The mag is located in the typical location and the bolt release is actually built in the mag (so it pushes the follower down and allows the bolt to ride forward).

i have been looking into a 30-06 semi that most lib-tards people would not think nothing of a rifle looking like yours. IT'S NOT BLACK N SCARY LOOKING.lol. little do they know what a 30-06 rd. is. stupid people. thanks your rifle is nice looking too. any issues running her? i like the deal about looking under the forearm.
@dwellbig
@dwellbig 8 жыл бұрын
MegaBait56 I have actually not had a single issue and she is really comfortable and fun to shoot. It is not a tack driver by any means, but still decent 100 yd groupings (2 inches or less). This rifle was also handed down to my fiance from her grandfather who likely put very very few rounds through it looking at the condition of the gun. I doubt when I got it it was even through the break in period lol. From what I have seen when these do come up for sale or trade, one in good-excellent condition can be had for anywhere between 300 and 500 at the very top end. 500 IMO would have to be one in equal condition to this one which is nearly perfect. Just my two cents lol
@MegaBait1616
@MegaBait1616 8 жыл бұрын
thanks for the come back it is in beautiful condition. people seem to have no issue with a rifle that does not have a "black" stock.lol. stupid cause it is a semi that shoots a 30-06. she is a keeper!

This one was made back when Rem was making good guns which they no longer do although I think they had some issues. Remington quality has went crap. That savage will outshoot the 742 though. Id buy a Savage any day over a rem 700. 700s are over rated. Win model 70s and Browning rifles are better than rem if you want higher end and the sako rifles are a step above but your gonna pay a lot more for it.

One thing I could never understand was how Remington could manufacture and "let out on the market" the 740 and 742 (jam-a-matic) with so many of these having a lousy design, I mean how could a rifle good for less than 500 rounds before the receiver rails are worn out be mass produced if Remington tested these before marketing them? Thank god for the 7400 with the improvements (only after 2.5 million were produced).... I worked on the 742's and 740's many times and the only way to fix em is not add metal to the rails and re-machine which is not worth the effort but instead add metal to the carrier and re-machine or just sell it for parts on ebay...Not one mention on the net about repair other than stoning the rails...Give me a break...I will have to make one I guess and give a accurate review..Thanks for the vid don't get me wrong any are appreciated..
