.. My Dad bought his Remington 550-1..for about $90+_, Brand New. I asked why this model? He said it could shoot Short.. Long..and Long Rifle .22 ammo without having to adjust anything. He taught me how to shoot with it when I was 9- years old..and we had very good times with it together. for me,that Remington 550-1 was ( and still is !), the best Rifle in the World! Last Hunted with it in 1968..and haven't fired it since then.. ' am 72-now..l think l will take it to a One, last firing, before l join my Dad to the " Happy Hunting Ground".. Thank you for your time reading this account..much obliged 🙏

I have a Remington Apache 77. I bought it a K-mart back in 88-89. I'll never sell it. It's going to my grandson, as long as he doesn't grow up to be a liberal.

Another great video! As kids, in the 70’s, my buddy/neighbour and I shot piles of .22 ammunition down range at various targets. Him with his Remington Nylon model 66 Mohawk and me with my Winchester 9422. The good times we had so many summers ago. I still have the 9422 and I wouldn’t be surprised if he still has the Nylon 66.

Dayattherange, it brought a huge smile to my face when I ran across your video. I have a 550-1 that my Grandpa bought new (barrel code says June 1950), that my brother and I grew up shooting. In response to your statement about not having any .22 Long to test it with, I shot tons of 'em back in the 80s, as well as .22 Short. We'd shoot bricks of LR through it before it would finally *occasionally* jam when firing shorts. No matter how dirty it was, it NEVER jammed when using Long or LR, and never failed to return to battery. After a good cleaning and lubrication, it would go back to cycling .22 Short all day long with nary an issue. The old gal is actually disassembled for restoration right now, and I'm about to start prepping everything for rebluing. Believe it or not, it was just today that my son brought over his Apache Black Nylon 66, that had belonged to his maternal grandfather. The bolt handle broke, and he wanted me to replace it for him. His birthday is coming up, and he doesn't know it yet, but it's gonna be returned to him meticulously clean and with a brand new Vortex Crossfire replacing the $30 Tasco he took off a pellet gun and put on it. The Nylon 66 Black Diamond that I have is unbelievably accurate. It's light and a blast to shoot. I can hit every nickel out of a roll of nickel's when stood on their rims and lined up across a 2x4 edge at 30 yards. That's pretty good for open sights in my opinion.

I inherited it 550-1 and a Marlin model 60. I haven't shot them for 30 years. I left them in my dad's gun safe. I am getting them both this weekend.

Ah man, cool video. That 550-1 turned out great. A year ago, almost exactly, I lost a old friend and he gave me this exact rifle just before he passed. My son shoots it now. Perfect for him at 12 years old. In 1 year, 3 generations enjoyed this old timer and im sure my sons son will enjoy it as well. Cheers brother! And thank you. God bless

I have two Remington Nylon 66 Mohawk Brown rifles that I managed to pick up CHEAP and ultra CHEAP . While the exteriors of both rifles are in great shape , the one recently acquired needs some receiver / cover plate attention and a possible re bluing to remove some very nominal surface rust. I have gone through the interior of the one rifle and it is in good shape but need to go through the interior of the other rifle and give it the once over. I have always had a hard lust for a 550 but never have managed to pick one up. You did an excellent job in remodeling your 550 and that wood has a great luster so whatever products you used on it really bring out the finish. Now, all of this is wonderful but I have a Marlin Model 99 that is topped with a 6 X Weaver scope that will put most, if not all of the rounds in a dime to quarter sized group at 50 yards on a regular basis, using CCI ammo. It certainly is a tack driver.

I bought my 550-1 in the late 1980s It was used and looks like hand checkered after market. Open sights. Tack driver. Fun old gun.

That old nylon 66 brings back some fun memories of me and my buddies shooting and squirrel hunting together, I was shooting a Marlon madle 60 and my one friend a nylon 66 and and we had a ton of fun out shooting my other friends modle 10/22 lol that nylon 66 broke my ruger fan friends heart lol

I bought a very nice Apache about 6 months ago in Georgia for $350, I would rate it as a $500 gun. They are around for a decent price, but you have to look.

My 70 year old dad just past and I inherited the Remington 550-1 dual extractor variant. I’m going to get it serviced at some point and am looking forward to using it proper as whenever dad took it out as kids it would only manage 1 shot before a malfunction and dad didn’t have weapon trading in beyond Vietnam era military service though he did like to shoot on occasion. It’s missing one of the extractors the outer is clearly broke off or just missing following a disassemble. Dad always said it was an army training rifle but I can’t find anything so far though to be fair I just started. There 2 other rifles both look like in the .300 range though I haven’t fully checked yet as this one stood out as kids and my brothers aren’t interested in it as it’s only a .22 caliber.0

Great video! And good shooting too. I’ve got two 66s. One is my first ever firearm purchase when I turned 18 and it is a Black Diamond like yours. And I mean like yours...in near new condition. I’ve fired over 16,000 thru that gun (for years, I saved the box flaps from my ammo boxes just for keeping a round count) and don’t remember more than a dozen mis-feeds or other minor (ammo related?) failures. Paid $120 otd for it, brand new. The other is a 1965 Mohawk Brown that has one very light scratch on the left side of the stock. Paid $275 for it three years ago. Both are very accurate. I’ve only used the iron sights on either. Coincidentally, just today I used the MB to win a 22 woods walk, hitting 46 out of 50 steel targets ranging in size from 2”, to 8” at 20 to 60 yd. And no, not all the small targets were close, at 20 yd. There were some 4”, 5” and 6” targets out there at 35 to 45 yd. I’ve never seen a Nylon 66 that was rated for longs, or shorts. Both of mine, as well as my older brothers three Black Apache rifles, all say “22 LR only” on the barrels.

My 66 would shoot longs, but not shorts. I don't think I every had a jam or ftf with it. It left me too soon.

I have a Remington 550 with beautiful wood like yours and I mounted a Lyman All American 4x scope on it. It shoots better than most modern rifles.

I had a Nylon 66 many years ago. It was "taken" as in Zork. I still have a 550-1 that I need shoot more. I've been looking at all these "Challenge" vids and I've got to give it a try. That hostage target you've been shooting is a humbling experience. I think I'm gonna try that one too, but don't feel very confident that I can "save" them all. BTW, my "range" is pretty much a budget affair in my backyard using a couple of "Champion" bullet traps. My best rifle for this is a 15 year old CZ 452FS. Time flies after 50!

$50 was a BIG chunk o change back then. Yes these are on par with the other best most reliable 22 semiauto rifle - that being Sig Sauer’s 522. Having owned both, the top favorite is Remington Nylon 66 because it’s so lightweight and equally reliable.

Loved this video, great job. You were having such a fun time, made me happy. I have a Remington 550-1 from 1953. My father bought it new when he was 18 years old. It is in great condition and still a tack driver. My old eyes have a tough time with the iron sights at 50 yards, but this one wasn't grooved for a scope and I can't bring myself to drill it. Your restoration looked awesome. Just subscribed, looking forward to checking out your other content, Thanks.

All vintage is fun and interesting but what most of us want to know is how accurate these old rifles are with ammo we have or can get anywhere. I bought a new Nylon 66 in the late 1960s, still have it but haven't shot rifles for over 10 years. I need to get back into it. The 66 is knows to be extremely reliable and does not need internal lubrication. They are tricky to disassemble, especially all the way. But KZfaq helps a ton.

I just got a 550-1. The stock is a bit dinged up, and I was thinking about leaving it. Now I have to refinish it after seeing what you did with yours. That looks nice. Semper fi.

The Nylon 66 (brown) was the first rifle I ever fired. Early 60's. It was my Grandmother's. First squirrel, first rabbit. I really wish it hadn't disappeared. But I remember shooting squirrels in near zero degree weather, and never had a problem with it. Hoping to get my old Mossberg out, soon. Rained on my last day off. Maybe this week I'll get lucky? Brought back some good memories Mr. Revolverguy 👍🇺🇸

Loved my nylon 66. It loved to shoot cci stingers, but it needed to be dirty or it would get rebound jams

They are around $150 now. My local place has 6 for sale and one with a scope for $250, it’s a lot nicer then the other 6. However I do plan to get one. To go along with the Marlin model 60 I found there for $75. Now with my Ruger 10/22 scoped and Ruger American Bolt action with scope running low cost bulk is a real blast now. The good ammo when I can find it I have found it really something special. Nice shooting and great video. We have found running all the .22,s is a real blast. Can’t wait to run the .22 shorts in the 550-1 once I get it. If I get one that needs a bit of restoring it’s nice to see here from you it’s not a super difficult challenge. They have Winchester tube mag stock fed .22 rifles from time to time around$100-200. I plan to get one sometime soon and hopefully a nice Browning. Then that’s enough I feel. Your ELEY ammo is from the late 80,s to early 90,s I believe

My Dad had a 22 plastic. Interestingly its magazine i may be wrong was plastic. I noticed your had a brass mag tube. Thx for your videos I love them.

He may have had the 77 magazine fed rifle. Looked identical to the tube fed model except for the magazine and they were plastic.

Awesome! Would love to know the steps you took in refinishing that 550-1. The stock and barrel look amazing. I have that exact rifle that belonged to my grandfather...it needs some TLC and I’d be much happier knowing that, instead of paying someone to do it, it was my sweat equity brought it back.

Yosef99, I actually have a 550-1 that I refinished. I also refinish furniture professionally. I removed the stock of course. Stripped the old finish with paint remover. Next, it's time to take care of any dings or scratchs that are in the bare wood. Mine wasn't bad. Just started with 180 grit sandpaper. Progressed to 220, the finally 320. Any gouges that are too deep to sand out. I like to fill with a epoxy putty. I like Mohawk's. It comes in colors. There are others. A good hardware store should have some. I know Mohawk's can be purchased from Amazon. Hopefully you want need that. Next, depending on what color you want. You might want to stain it. However, since the 550-1 stocks are walnut. I didn't stain mine at all. Walnut wood naturally has a color to it. If you do stain it. I would recommend thinning what ever stain you use. Xylenol, or what ever thinner recommend for the particular stain your using. Walnut takes stain like a sponge. Easy to get too dark. Start light. Easy to add more. Next I just used Minwax clear polyurethane. In the aerosol cans. I like the satin. Use semi-gloss if you want a little more Sheen. I believe the satin would be authentic for the 550-1. Before you start spraying. You'll need to devise a way to hold it while you are spraying it. I used a large wood dowel. Laid in where the barrel sits. With a screw in through the stock/barrel hole. Left it about a foot longer with a hole in the end to hang it up while drying. After 2-3 coats. Sand the poly with 400 wet or dry paper. 1 or 2 more coats should be enough. Or more depending on you preference. Sanding in-between with the 400 paper. Be sure to spray in a place with VERY good lighting. You want to get it just wet enough to flow out. But not to wet to cause swags or runs. Turning the stock and looking carefully. Adding a little spray at a time. And that's it! It's not hard to do!

The ejector is steel so is the recoil system and the mechanics is all steel, it’s only frame and housing is plastic, first rifle I ever shot and Iwas three at the time, so 57 years ago.

Big E it shot really well considering it's age and the age of that ammo I was using. Even more amazing to me it all fed that was was really dried out.

It is a weaver side mount unfortunately not made anymore. I see them come up on that auction channel from time to time.

1955 receipt??? Nylons didn't come out until 1959. Maybe 1965? or the store was lazy in setting the date mechanism in the cash register. The only 66 rated for shorts were the Gallery Guns for shooting galleries. I have several 66s, including CBC's clones made in Brazil. All great shooters for "cheap, plastic rifles".

The Black diamond Nylon 66 came out in 1978, therefore your friend could not have purchased this rifle in 1955, or any Nylon 66 for that fact, because the Nylon 66 did not become available until 1959!

When I was in the Army about 35 years ago I bought a Remington 550-1 from a pawnshop for about $70. My buddy laughed at me for buying an old .22 rimfire, but I love that rifle. The shorts are hard to get nowadays, but the floating chamber mechanism boosts bolt energy while dissipating bore pressure somewhat, so the action cycling noise almost seems more pronounced than the muzzle report.

It has a dovetail rail in the top that will mate to CZ rings

@@Dayattherange Standard 3/8" dovetail of the era. Still in use today most rimfire rings will work on it. The CZ dovetail is slightly different at 11mm IIRC.

I've had very good luck with Golden bullets! Not quite as hard hitting as mini mags. But they feed as fire well in a my 22s

@@rogercarrico4975 same here. Everything I have run them through really runs well. Not one misfire yet about 300 rounds into my first $79 1400 round bucket from Walmart. At the shooters round up this last August the Remington Rep was there and told me they have really stepped up the quality on the golden buckets. I told him I appreciate it and too keep up the great work. He smiled, gave me a hat and said thanks so much. My feedback is definitely something he wanted to hear. Now yous as well, I will tell him next year your comment. He will love it I’m sure. 😊
