I can't believe someone drilled a hole to plug the extension cord, it would've been more or less the same amount of effort to do it properly. I'm sure it was very satisfying for you to clean all that mess.

T'was SOOO satisfying! Unfortunately I'm finding lots of work done in this half-ass sort of way. This poor boat sure suffered through much neglect.

George, you are quite welcome. Thank you for the support. As far as boating projects, absolutely, dive right in! Only have one life to live and they are a "boat" load of fun hahaha.

Oh my God, glad you are pulling that rats nest of wires out of the boat. I'm not sure how the previous owner didn't fry himself or the boat. Keep up the videos, great progress is being made.

You should be able to lift the slider panel up, pull the bottom out, then slide the panel down and out.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Domenic, I tried to lift those panels every which way till Sunday. Then I tried it again lol. Those things are built in, which makes sense for heavy seas. Keeps the doors from falling out.

That capacitor attached to the outlet is to prevent large voltage drops when a significant load is placed on the circuit. Never seen it done that way but hey, never seen extension cord wiring either.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
That makes sense, so many things were done strangely/incorrectly/incompetently on this boat.

Strip the coating off the wires especially the big stuff with a razor blade and a pair of pliers and then recycle the copper. It brings good money that you can use for boat projects.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Good idea Ben, what’s the going rate for copper these days?
@bendaves77
@bendaves77 Жыл бұрын
@Ambiguous Globetrotter out in California I'm sure it's atleast $3 to $4 per pound.. it's got to be stripped but if you use a utility knife and a pair of vice grips it will strip right off. It doesn't take much to make a few hundred dollars. Brass or any metal you take off I'd recycle because it will help you get extra money for boat projects

The outlet that has a capacitor and not sure what the orange thing is, but it could be a larger capacitor, or inductor. The PO may needed to use the capacitors to filter the power as that is what those capacitors are probably doing. Maybe the PO noticed some odd interference on the power line. In any event, its a Frankenstein and you should chuck it! I'll bet the PO was using that plug for DC power rather than AC from the inverter. Most devices these days have their own electrical filtering.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Ah, that makes sense. Even though very little of what the PO did makes any sense haha! Thank you for the input!

That looks like an "MOV" used as a gen 1 surge suppressor. Supposed to filter out sudden huge voltage spike (think nearby lightning strike).

AGREED! This boat needs to come out of the water ASAP for inspection/cleaning/repairs/paint... it's a long list. My hope is to get it to a boat yard in the next 1-3 months. The sooner the better, just need to solve a couple of nagging issues first.
@cameronurquhart1515

Vasil, have you inspected your through hull fittings? Given the state of the wiring and the dodgy way the wires were connected/set up I would want to look carefully at any connection to any hole in your boat, especially those under the water line.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Cameron, I checked as many fittings as I could find. However, it does keep me up at night thinking about them. I need to pick up the pace and pull this boat out of the water and replace every single fitting along the hull.

The coil of large yellow wire is shore power cord for when at dock. It always amazes me how butchered wiring can become. Tear it out and do it right.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Ah, shore power, that makes all the sense in the world. The wiring on this boat got butchered, then ground up, and then set on fire lol. This sure is going to get done right!
@bendaves77

All the wiring in your boat needs to be cut out and removed. Definitely needs to be put on the hard where you can dismantle everything. Fix and patch all holes and paint it. Followed by redoing all systems on board to suit your needs.
@ambiguousglobetrotter

Crazy how those wires were done! I’m looking for places where I could dry dock the boat for a period of time. Mexico would be best, but then I would need to take a good amount of time off from work.

Don't toss that yellow "extension cord " that's a shore power cable for use in a marina. They cost well north of $100 depend on length & amp rating maybe $250

Wow. As I was typing my shore power comment, you panned over an ooold NewMar charger. That's a museum piece but might be worth something in scrap. You will probably want to replace it with a modern one that's more efficient. The ones I've seen are kind of noisy you could hear that 60 cycle hum like a transformer.

Sorry man but those inverters are going to kill any power saving by using 110 ac LEDs, inverters consume a ton of power "converting" the power. you really need to get your 12v system up and get 12v LEDs. just to throw it out there, I spent 20 years as a Navy electrician, I'm in SD and have a sail boat as well in Fiddlers cove marina just south of you. I love seeing old boats brought back to life.
@ambiguousglobetrotter
@ambiguousglobetrotter Жыл бұрын
Wow, We are practically neighbors! I just passed that marina today! Totally agree with you on the inverters, they sap power. The 12v LEDs are what I was thinking about using after having to jerry rig the inverter and use 110. That system would be so much more efficient. How is Fiddlers Cove, it looks amazing?
@vintagerevival391
@vintagerevival391 Жыл бұрын
@@ambiguousglobetrotter Fiddlers cove is nice but to many rules, we always go into Glorietta bay and hang out for the day. yea the 12v system is going to be way more efficient and reliable, get you a solar panel and charge controller some batteries and your good to go, unless you need to use large loads such as tools. I run 2 blue top batteries and a 100w panel, Ive never killed the batteries. let me know if you ever need any help, i love old boats!
