Ripcord I was so pissed when I almost lost it in carvana but then I was able to buy it. TRD Off-road double cab short bed. But carvana canceled the order due to a safety issue with it. I’m thinking rusty frame since it was a NY truck. I now have a super white SR5 4x4 so it’s a nice Tacoma and if I really want a cool color I’ll just wrap it. But I probably won’t because money

That's an old hot rodding trick for ram air intake. Another is to simply add washers under the hinges holding the hood to the body. This will give you a large intake area at the base of the windshield.

Only issue I see with this area for the air intake is if you are parked overnight in a tree shaded area this cowl tends to get plugged with leaves, especially in the fall. Snow and ice could also be a winter issue i suppose as well.

So the impetus to remove the snorkel was that you did not like the aesthetics of having it sticking out and making the vehicle look less streamlined? Well, though that seems like an odd reason to go through all this work to me, it's your truck so it is 100% your preference and decision, and no one can ever argue with that. I spose you also got a youtube 'how-to' video out of replacing it, so if your findings at the end of the video that your fuel efficiency got better holds out over the long run, you definitely got a net benefit. Though you might have lost some utility, in that you can't go through deeper water than you could with the snorkel, since you said you never really did deep river crossing anyway, I guess that means you did not need that utility anyway. So you got your streamlined truck back, and if you did not need the extra utility from the snorkel, you did it right by you. Which seems like it is more than enough justification to go through the work to do it. So, well done, young fella. Let us know in a later vid if the fuel efficiency increase held up, and if you do ever get leakage problems when the snow piles up on that windshield.

This is a great idea which I'm going to do on my 2012 Tacoma. Curious though, why not use a length pleated flexible intake hose instead of the rigid couplings? Wouldn't that make it easier to change/clean the air filter?

@@GMauriceGuinouard did you have any problems with the snow covering?
@GMauriceGuinouard
@GMauriceGuinouard 2 жыл бұрын
@@dsa420meh7 Nope, I didn't. That mostly being because we don't get a lot of snow where I live in central AZ at about 5200 feet. Also when I do expect snow I put a windshield cover on the Tacoma and it's apron is long enough that it covers the cowl vents. All that be being said if the cowl is covered with snow, a quick swipe while clearing the windshield and the heat from the engine will melt what's left in a minute or two. One thing to note. With this mod the initial start of the engine, and whenever you accelerate you'll definitely hear more engine noise. Once you stop acceleration, the cabin noise goes down to normal levels. Hope this helps.

I'm new to this so excuse my lack of knowledge. But why not just keep a 4" tube for the entire intake??
@RipcordHQ
@RipcordHQ 3 жыл бұрын
Fair question. There's 2 reasons: 1) The OEM intake tube also necks down. It expands to 4" near the filter housing there to slow the air down to pass through the filter effeciently 2) The cowl area is not tall enough for a 4" tube, the "gutter" at the bottom of the cowl area would then drain water into the intake instead of the intake being above that.

Careful on water crossings.... On a deep one that rushes over the hood and onto the windshield water will go up the windshield and back down into that channel... the reason the aircon has raised inlets is because water is not allowed in and then can drain... with the intake where you put it another lower area when flooded with water is you new intake with what looks to be a down hill ride straight into the engine. I wouldn't say its better than a snorkel, because a snorkel is meant to allow a vehicle engine to breath when entering deep water and this does not.
@RipcordHQ
@RipcordHQ 3 жыл бұрын
I think you need to look closer at the setup. The intake is not at a "low point" in the cowl as you say. It is actually as high up in the cowl as I could get it, above the HVAC intake even (granted, I should have shown another shot of the cowl with everything installed). The cowl will need to almost completely fill up with water before any goes into the intake pipe, which is basically impossible unless I am fording water as high as the hood (which I wont be). As far as my claim of "better than a snorkel", I added a question mark at the end so people can make up their own mind. For my purposes though, it is better.
@buildadventure404
@buildadventure404 3 жыл бұрын
@@RipcordHQ A shot of the after on the cowl would be good. Another easy way to check/show how well it works would be to toss a hose or 2 on the windshield with the intake disconnected. Not perfect since an engine does pull a lot of air in but it would show if water were to pour out of the intake hole or not to simulate a river crossing. I think it would be GREAT content! But if your not doing deep river crossing then a snorkel is not needed.. Personally I love the look of a snorkel but I understand the clean look as well.
