Our second feature on compact French hot hatches from the early 2000’s… this time the RenaultSport Clio 172. In this video we share a bit of history and the story behind RenaultSport and the Clio 172, as well as taking this stonking hot hatch for a drive.
Destined to be a modern classic car, early sporty Clios are becoming a rare sight on today’s roads. But following on from the mighty Renault 5 Turbo, Clio Williams and Clio V6… is this Clio 172 any good?

What a spectacular video, man! Here in Brazil we don't receive the Clio RS, but there is a legion of fans here, so much so that many owners convert their cars bringing parts from Europe to be as close as possible to a legitimate RS. Brazilian greetings.

Currently driving 172 around as a courtesy car while my fiesta st200 is in the garage. For a 20 year old car wow what fun to drive the steering is sharp and pointy and the 2.0 l 16 v engine suits the car so much. It has definitely surprised a lot of cars on my commute to and from work. If you ever get a chance to drive or own one definitely go for it. You won't be disappointed

Thanks for the comment. Great comparison, jumping from an ST200 (which is a brilliant car) into an older RenaultSport 172 and enjoying the way it drives is great to know. They certainly are fantastic little cars, but do stick with that ST200 as it is very special. Thanks for watching.

Had these here in South Africa too. We had all the best of Euro hot hatchbacks. Even the MG ZT made it here

Appreciate your taste in hot hatches.. but the id say at 25mph the chances of the bonnet flipping up on you would be fairly minimal.

172 Phase 1 have almost the same half leather/half alcantara seats. Difference is in all leather support section and I have colorful Renault sport logo on them in my Clio.

I'm lucky enough to own a 172 cup and 182 FF. My wife keeps telling me to sell one of them but I can't part with either of them 😄

Clio 2 RS was indeed the 'best bang for the buck' hot hatch, only thing letting it down was the cheap plastics Renault used on the interior. Personally i think he front of the Phase 2 looks a lot better then the Phase 1 (looks a bit sad).

@@cornishcarcollectors Sweet, looking forward to it! Got 90's hot hatch myself. An almost as new 1993 Renault 19 16v Phase 2 (LHD) with a low boost turbo converted 2.0 16v (F7R) does about 230HP/320Nm.

Is that the road to Torpoint? I had a 172 & 182 from new, cracking cars. Sold the 182 for a 255 back in 2004. Still got the V6 now.
